Model Output Discussion - Into Winter
mat43 replied to MATTWOLVES 3's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
That will be Cross Fell (893m) highest point of the Pennines in Cumbria. Often extreme weather up there, and wind speeds and temperature are recorded at the radar station on its neighbour Great Dun Fell (848m) -
I agree, my first thought would be one of those (should be illegal) tealight balloons/lanterns. Might travel fast in the wind, though there was no wind at ground level last night, the temperature difference between the burning candle and the air temperature could propel it faster? Certainly the candles would burn longer, and in cold would ‘lift higher’ Yes, I seem to be in our ‘local frost pocket ). -7.1° last night, so not as cold as I feared it would get down to. Currently -4.2°

Maybe selfish, as we had snow in December, but in March I’d far prefer this ‘cold spell” to disappear and to receive Spring sunshine instead. Gas usage has noticeably re-increased. Our trio of wild mallards are now arriving at the patio daily at c.4pm to be fed (I use floating duck food) Last 30 days of max/min temperatures

Very warm outside, been gradually rising all night from 9° and currently 13°. Currently showing gusting at 40mph but will be higher than that, as our vane isn’t high enough yet (moved here just before covid, and not yet got round to have an aerial man to move it higher!) MetOffice Brid were showing about 10mph faster than ours a couple of hours ago.

Well, today the forecasts have been completely wrong. Beautiful blue sky and sunshine so far all day. Feels lovely out in the garden, cleaning up and planting a few veg. Popped to Scarb to order a cake, and it was surprisingly quiet, I suppose it’s cloudy further west, reducing tourist traffic. Reached 11.6° earlier and still no sign of any clouds

Agree, today was wonderful, had a quick stroll down to the Gypsey Race at lunchtime to see if there was any change in flow, and it was lovely in the sun, with far less of that bitter wind from yesterday. Though the speed was about the same it was more WSW at lunch today, whereas yesterday it was more SSE. 9°C. The mallards (5 pairs) were on the lawn for the first time on Monday, but not been back since. (We miss them and feed them proper duck pellets during breeding time)
