Has someone changed thread names or something, nothing but moan moan moan in the model thread at the moment, I get it, GFS has changed, much more than I thought it would. It probably won't look the same at 18z. It's finding its feet again.
Finding its feet?

The lack of named storms has certainly been an odd one. It's helping to make the Met Office's A-Z of names look even more daft than usual, given I don't think we've ever even made it a third of the way through the alphabet (have we even made it a quarter of the way through?). Just to be clear, I'm not saying I disagree with the naming of storms, despite how it sounds .
Yep, 2020 wasn't a great one. Long, long periods of nothing-ness. The tropical conditions in August with popcorn storms firing up out of nowhere at 10 in the evening was very unique though! Not that I actually experienced any night-time storms overhead that year (I lived in NE Hants at the time, but it was the same story here on the IOW).
Do we ever get to name a storm? I thought that the Irish or French named them and we borrowed it.

Scotland covers half the country. But March 2006 was very cold.
Covers half the country but only 15% of the population.

I wonder what the teleconnections thought of March 2006?
That was a very cold March and very snowy but no beast from the East.
That must be local to Scotland, as are most snow events. Nothing down here in March 2006.

Well we’re off to Norway for a weeks skiing and to see proper winter in early March! Best to not expect anything from this pathetic country’s winter weather.
I think you meant this country's pathetic winter weather.

Well not all have seen snow...I travelled around on the 12th December and many coastal districts (Essex) and further north received nowt but rain, but yes if you like frosty/icy conditions so far this winter has been better than average just a shame we didn't get the seasonal conditions over the Xmas and New Year period.
See BBC once again has been well out with their extended forecast (as from mid-week last week)...they had Sunday and Monday down for 9c, the reality is yesterday had a max of 4c and currently sitting at 2 degrees, they really want to kick that MeteoGroup into touch, not the first poor forecast 5 days ahead I've seen over the last couple of years.
Agree regarding the BBC forecasts. I missed the lunchtime forecast yesterday but the previous Sunday's forecast for the week was embarrassing with the lack of detail.

There is always Imby in people's perception, hence 'Imby'? seven days straight here in East Yorkshire locally we have had over night temps of between -2 and -6, those temps are open to one's interpretation of what is cold?? I personally class that as cold, record breaking? No....obvs, but still a tad chilly, the nit picking over 'what is cold' is rather tiresome.
Although when based on location and weather preference opinions will no doubt obviously vary!! Each to their own
It's down to the lack of snow, pure and simple.

The only good thing about this winter is when it' over.
Two cold snaps - no snow in Guildford yet again. More snow falls in Cornwall formerly the most 'snow-free' part of the UK, than here as a conducive synoptic set-up never develops.
Weeks of endless rain and soon as the temperature drops low enough for snow, we can't get a single flake to fall.Sunday 11th December was a joke with the snow area moving in an anticlockwise direction around Guildford missing the area by <10 miles and now its northerlies, the most useless synoptic set up for snow here and this follows yesterday's channel depression disappointment and this morning's S.W. snow frustration. Current winter is worse than 1983/1984 - at least there were flurries that year.
In the nine years after the end of the cold winter era in 1987, there were two reasonable winters (1990/1991 and 1995/1996) and two acceptable winters for snow (1993/1994 and 1996/1997). In a comparable nine year period since the last decent winter (2012/2013) there have been NO reasonable winters and snow only fell in March 2018 (B.F.T.E.) after a horrendous winter of cold rain and let-downs beforehand, February 2019 (which was at Fleet and not Guildford - where I was lucky enough to be to witness the interesting weather for a change) and 24th January 2021.
Kick in the teeth with another snowless borefest for the rest of this week, especially given the excitement of this time 10 years ago.
If we can't get a proper cold snap with WIDESPREAD snow then I wish we could get conditions like in the winters of 2018/2019 and last year, mild and dry, so I can at least enjoy my cycling and forget about the rotten weather. Conditions may be boring but at least everyone's missing out in a mild dry set-up and it is easier not to get frustrated yearning for something that no one else is experiencing.
Understand where you are coming from although we did get about 1 inch in December. Have to face facts and accept that we live in a poor area for snow.

6c is not very cold. That's average. 2-3c is very cold
That's my thoughts too. Just goes to illustrate the complete dumbing down of the BBC Sunday lunchtime forecast. It used to be the go to and eagerly awaited forecast, now sadly treated as an irritant by the BBC. I'm sure they'd rather put on yet another advert for Waterloo Road.

Just watched the BBC forecast for the week ahead. Where do I start? Basically saying they haven't got a clue what is happening this week. A masterpiece in weeble-covering! Expect snow somewhere/everywhere/nowhere. Temperatures very cold (6 degrees c) and frosty nights (no Temperatures given). Honestly I despair at the current state of BBC forecasts.

Reflects the week ahead forecast at lunchtime by next weekend they said remaining mild and no signs of any colder weather, maybe the GFS is correct
You'll know our chances of snow are scuppered if they put Darren Bett on next Sunday lunchtime!

Well if we can't get any cold at least we can get some stormy weather at least!
Wouldn't bet on it. Probably just cloudy and breezy. Any precipitation for Scotland as per usual.

For our little section of the globe you certainly were correct! Probably couldn't have more contrasting charts between last nights 18z and this mornings 00z. Blocking with a real threat from the east to a tilers paradise in 6 hours! Some viscous looking storms on the 00z. Due to lack of consistancy neither to be trusted or likely to verify post day 7.
Not looking forward to those sticky storms!

After being away for a while I thought I might come back to some decent output for cold. Alas I can see nothing in the reliable to get excited about for me.
Cold rain doesn't cut it for me. Coupled with underwhelming MO further, time for another break.
Happy new year all.
Don't let the MO outlook put you off watching. Their updates change regularly.

It would seem that their ideas are inline with many on here. Hopes for a decent cold spell in January are rapidly diminishing and that's the way it is sadly!
Don't bother reading their updates, they are really not very accurate. They change with the wind!

What a poor spell for snow apart from the odd lucky spot in the south. Not a great sign going forward as imo that shows the atmosphere isn't predisposed to correctly alligned troughs / tilts to produce widespread snow this winter. Last big frontal snow event was 4th Feb 2012.
Scotland have done pretty well up to now.
