  1. Should add that's for UK. If we end up 1 above for Feb we should just be on the slightly colder side. Some model output may just make possible
  2. Going off topic a bit (can't find the winter moans and ramps), this winter may well end up slightly colder than the 91 to 20 average but not 61 to 90. Shame we had the very mild spells really. Had we had average weather with the extended cold spells, we'd have been well below this winter. I think it's been a good winter really. Good snow for some areas, lots of frosty mornings and more recently some great sunsets. Damn the mild spells!!
  3. We've had more than normal in Manc. I've noticed a few times over the years that when we get snow, a lot of places miss out. Let me caveat that we often get nothing when other parts of the country have hum dingers!! Strange
  4. Yeah, February's seem to be following a pattern. I know what you mean about the snowy breakdowns, though they were usually rubbish for the lowest part of Manchester. Strangely we have more snow showers off the Irish Sea now in Manc. Done well last few years and because they're short and sharp, they don't turn to rain. Funny old weather!
  5. Didn't the lakes have extended cold periods in Dec and Jan?? Saw some pics and the Fells looked very snowy!
  6. Funnily enough I was having a weekend in London in Feb 12 and remember it snowed heavily on the sat night we stayed. Am not sure its possible to have 1 ft of snow in Manc. I say that in all seriousness as I know 63 it was 9 inches in suburbs and 6 inches in the town centre and that was the mother of winters apparently. A lot of my family live in a shrewsbury. It snows less than MC but about every 10 to 15 years they get a 1ft snowfall. I think in Manc its because we can't get the Easterly falls over the pennines for long enough to produce that amount and if its Atlantic driven hitting cold air it would turn to rain before it ever got near a foot. Maybe 1947 but can't find that out
  7. We had the cold spell in Manc but this was when it was milder for us all. I believe you had excellent cold in Dover. Much snow??
  8. I think you probably get better snowfalls?? The heavy falls I remember were 79, 2010, 1996 and 2018. 2018 probs only 3 inches (good for Manc) but the best blizzard I ever saw. Proper powder snow and no melt for a week. Perfect
  9. And we are in very different parts of the country too so we can't be the only ones! In Manchester in the 80s it was really the 81/82 one that stood out. Definitely more snow here in recent years but not as cold as 80s. Major snow events for Manchester have always been every 10 year events ie 6 inches
  10. Is there a danger on these forums that we tend to fantasise about past winters? I find myself doing it and then check myself. No doubt winters have become milder overall but I also remember long snowless periods in the past. 1970 to 76 comes to mind before the colder winters of the late 70's. Apparently 1900 to 1915 were generally mild winters. This year has been pretty good I think. Compared to 61 to 91 its not far off cet average. Compared to 91 to 2021 we are below average for UK temps. Also, because this winter has flitted from very mild to very cold, the cold periods have been quite memorable. Manchester, which rarely sees snow has done well this last few years including this year
  11. I take it that's where the Express get their weather headlines. I swear in January they said we were actually experiencing a big freeze when the temps ranged from 7 to 11 degrees!
  12. Thanks for that. I've fallen into the trap of seeing a crazy cold model and thinking it's going to happen!
  13. Given that extended cold periods have always been rare in UK, I do wonder if models struggled prior to the famous ones in the past. They seem to come out of nowhere sometimes. I've only been on the forum for a few months so don't actually know how the models faired prior to previous freezer weather. I'd be interested if anyone could shed light??
  14. Manchester had a fab snow event, not so much the amount (its normally just a couple of cm), but there was still snow on the ground a week later!!! Big snow events always exceptional here so yes, this was a good one in Jan for sure
  15. I've been seeing GFS runs like this for years. Still feel great when I see them. It's almost as good a feeling as when it actually comes off. I really should know better!
  16. West of pennines never the best for Easterly snow but has happened from time to time.
  17. Yes and even colder than Feb 63! Amazing! My dad remembers working outside in 47!
  18. I'm 58. Please let me know any snowy easterlies I've missed that came over pennines. Do remember a good one in 96 I think!
  19. Yes, thank the 2018 one was the great snow for stockport. 2013 don't think we had much low down. Remember driving over the A62 though to Huddersfield. I'd never seen drifts like it. What I remember about 85 was a decent snowfall, started to thaw then a massive freeze. My road was treacherous. 86 was a crazy month from memory for the deep cold. We must of had some snow in Stockport but just can remember. Great that you have such a good recollection
  20. The 2018 BFTE was pretty amazing though! Only one in my lifetime was 87! Even colder than Feb 63!!!
