  1. After 1970 from what I've read there were mild winters up to 1976! Think it's right as when I was at Primary school I don't remember snow at all. All kicked off in the late 1970's!!
  2. A bit off topic but am sure March 13 started very mild!! We'll be starting March slightly below and then, model permitting we go well below average till maybe mid March. After that, its still looking good for a colder if not much colder than average March. Please snow though
  3. Thanks Mike. Will have a read later. Am not actually sure what the difference is so interested to read!
  4. Though cold weather often doesn't last too long in UK, I do recall the models going against the weather forecasts in December for extended and they were right. Think initially the forecasters were suggesting 5 days of cold and it ending up at 10 with 7 of those extreme. Question: Are polar lows more likely in March April and if so why? Aren't 'April showers' often Arctic driven? And at that time of year not just coastal!
  5. I read that in 63 the depth of cold and extent over the Arctic was unusual that year. Also I think that there were fronts that caused temporary warm ups in the South but the cold would win. Dec 10 was the only one in my lifetime. I really hope so. Its great when it does stick around!
  6. Even 79 and 2010 were interspersed with mild periods and they were 2 of the best winters
  7. Yes I've often heard the TV forecasters say this! It strange because they don't often last longer than a week barring exceptional events
  8. Fascinating model viewing this ! We mustn't give up if we have some poorer runs as well later. Not often we have a good shout for some proper wintry weather this late in winter. I get almost as much joy from a great snowy run than a blizzard itself!
  9. Am fairly new to this, but already loving it! I was thinking about the difference in the GFS model 2m temps between the overnight and this mornings looking beyond 240. I get really excited about the cold and snowy charts but am realising that when it's 10 days away there probably are a number of possibilities. Throw in an SSW and that seems to make it all the more difficult. I get the feeling that those who understand the weather science( I certainly don't but am learning) at least think that a prolonged cold and maybe snowy period is a real possibility mid March and beyond. Hope so!!!
  10. I think I read a few years ago that it didnt actually melt. There's a name for it when it's cold enough. Remember looking it up because I couldn't understand why bit was disappearing but no slush at all!!
  11. You joined at a great time. Must have been a great few first years for you on the forum given those winters at the time. I joined this year and really enjoying it. Learning a few things in the way too
  12. Agree!!! Not so long ago the coldest December for a long long time so they will come again for sure!
  13. What about 2010?? Where I am any drifting wouldn't amount to much really. 2010 was deep snow but not sure about drifts. I know there were massive drifts in 2013 but may have been the higher routes. That doesn't really help does it!
  14. December was a cold month though!! Included a 7 day spell of 5 below average
  15. Excellent! By the time it got to Manchester it left around 2 inches. One of the best for Liverpool I imagine. From memory, don't think it got to the Pennines. What a month though. Incredibly cold for December. Interestingly there were a couple of milder periods as well. Just shows how cold the cold was. 6 degrees below for the month.
  16. Absolutely I echo that. I'm fairly new to the forum and passionate about the weather. Just think of the tension as part of the fun. We're all on here because we're interested
  17. We had the blowy snow in Manc all the time and I thought that was that. Drove home from work one night and saw some cloud drifting over the pennines and we had a 2 hour blizzard! Only time I remember powder snow in Manchester
  18. 2018 was amazing! Not the deepest snow I remember in Manc but when it snowed it was memorable! Minus 5 when it snowed and was powdery! We kept having the blowy snow and then it came over the pennines and gave us 3 inches which believe it or not is mega for Manchester!!
  19. Would you mind explaining the significance of a Scandinavian trough? Have read a few times. Fairly new to all this
