  1. Is 2008 a poor summer though? I think we are sometimes too quick to judge every summer by 2003 and 2006 standards and cast verdicts by reference to those exceptional years. I know we've only had approximately seven-ninths of it, but historically in comparison to the summers I've experienced since the Fifties I reckon this one has been pretty normal. And that observation does not include the potentially warmer spell we might enjoy from next weekend onwards.
  2. There is also controversy about the Gravesend-Broadness reading of 38.1°C. I remember reading it relates to the fact that the Stevenson screen is black instead of white or something silly. What is not in doubt is that the 38.1°C at Kew Gardens is the most reliable recording we have. What is worrying is the fact that is already 5 years since that day. The sands of time...
  3. Talking about TV weather, where is John Hammond? Haven't seen him for ages.
  4. The 34C on Aug 3 1990 was the highest temp I have recorded here in the Chilterns until August 9 2003, which was in turn usurped the following day. All those three days were warmer here than July 19 2006 when 33.7°C was recorded.
  5. The highest temperature in July was 29.7°C at Kew Gardens on the 27th.
  6. It was the way the final 9 days completely cancelled out what seemed to be, to me, persistently cool weather in the first 3 weeks of the month (only the 1st and 15th were above average in that period). Although the final third was consistently warm, it was not as if we had exceptional heat given the time of the year - we couldn't even manage 30°C.
  7. And two-thirds of it was pretty poor, really, yet it still turned out almost bang on average.
  8. Of course technically at least 2 of those are classified as "close to average".
  9. I like the way you leave gaps between below average entries and average entries; between average entries and above average entries; and then between above average entries and Craig Evans!
  10. The highest temperatures under standard conditions yesterday were 29.5°C at both Heathrow and Northolt. It's an odd phrase that. Surely a strict interpretation of it would preclude the location of recording instruments in any city centre. Heathrow, being an asphalt jungle, is certainly not representative of the surrounding area. The silly thing is that if the Clerkenwell station were located at street level it would probably record higher temps than it does from the roof.
  11. No 30°C today I'm pretty sure, but I suspect tomorrow and Monday may offer our best chances of 30°C being reached, for the foreseeable future at least.
  12. My initial hunch is that Thursday will not see 29C, maybe 26-27C. Friday is looking like the hottest day this week, say 28-29C. Incidentally, MO way out today with SE temps - forecasting 26C in London as late as this morning but only reaching 23C.
  13. 27.5°C at Malvern in Worcs on May 11th is still this year's highest, excluding rooftop sites.
  14. 17th of the month - a new record?
  15. No, Damian said it would need a "sustained very warm spell/hot spell" to achieve a 16.8°C return. I said it would need a "sustained very hot spell". In order of progessive warmth: very warm----->hot------->very hot. Yours pedantically, N.
  16. It wouldn't just take a very warm spell/hot spell to bring us up to 16.8C, it would take a sustained very hot spell, which is not looking likely. I think we can forget 16.8C.
  17. Well it's obviously heavily capital intensive so I imagine that is the case, but only for start-up costs. Operating costs are probably relatively low. Nuclear seems an efficient means of generation, unlike wind and solar which depend on prevailing conditions and must be very costly to store. I do need to do some research into waste.
  18. Has any method yet been found to somehow molecularly change the waste before it could be blasted off? Thanks to anyone who answers these questions - I am enthusiastic observer of weather and science but my technical knowledge of the matter is minimal.
  19. We should have started building nuclear power stations years ago. France has been doing so since the 1970s and 70% of her energy comes from this source. I hear a lot about the issue of nuclear waste. Now I admit I'm not a scientist, so I have 2 genuine questions that perhaps someone could answer. 1. What is France (and other countries) doing in terms of storage? 2. Something I've always wondered - Why can't nuclear waste simply be blasted into outer space? Trouble is, it's all about politics...obviously.
  20. Shouldn't that have been "BEE-hIve mate."
  21. I have to say it's been disappointing in London today given what we were promised. 23C at 1600hrs in London and much cloudier than forecast. It doesn't even feel especially warm.
  22. Well 16.0C is just about possible I suppose, though I still think a month lower than 16C is more likely than one above. To get 16.6C from here on in is going to require some doing - no sign of any heatwave in the offing and after tomorrow nothing remotely warm for the next week. Not impossible, but only 30% chance I'd say. 18.0C is certainly out of the question though.
  23. 18.0??! We'll be lucky to get 16.0 from here...
  24. He's done well to still be presenting Gardeners' Question Time after all those years.
