Good lord it's snowing, only small flakes but it's definitely snow rather than rain or sand.
In hale too, light snow hopefully will get thicker and last a few hours, seems to angled better than the forecast
-
Stone the crows, light snow in Alty
-
Not the most favourable track so not expecting much
Bit disappointing this spell, we need a Greenland High for certain snow, too variable these fronts and troughs
-
thanks Liam, seems to be struggling to push north, guess that's due to the upper wind from the east
Anyone use a different real time radar other than Rain Today to see if the band does indeed move north
-
What time is the main band due to hit, Raintoday shows it not getting north of Nottingham and then channeling away NW missing Manchester all together
There must be a push north at some point
-
Looks to be heading due northwest in a line from Brighton to Liverpool being the western edge, of course after Friday it will do as others have said and do anything it can to miss us again
Raintoday to watch all day then
-
Grapple here too, odd small flake in too, quite heavy and no wind v still, bonus
-
skys are darkening again and fine stuff starting again, interesting day
-
Dying out now, could be thats it for us
-
Still coming down, small flakes, seems the heavier band is just edging upto the M6 so, about 12.30 then if it doesnt stall for Alty
We have about 3cm max but swirling in the biting wind
-
Well raintoday just spot on, heavier stuff now just getting going in hale, altrincham
Wind picking up too, much colder
Good old GFS eh
-
Just started here , spot on backtrack seems 2 hours early so I am cautiously optimistic now, Belfast is the no snow zone not us
-
Hi Joe hope you're well mate, been a few years!
Yes, glued to the radar here scrutinising every update! Really does look like a pivot point over in Ireland.
(aka Northern_LIghts TWO)
Morning, does seem that the pivot point has moved away from over us to the Belfast area hence we could get the snow from the front, ideally it stalls over us as the winds pick up, it could just happen
-
Looking at the latest radar images the main band is from the SW - the GFS ppn chart shows a certain amount of less intensity as it approaches BUT the winds look SE which could force the main band into a more Northerly direction - light flurries still here near Wilpshire.
Ian
I think you may be correct sir, plus that spoiler short wave ain't formed where they thought hence a steady NE track, now if it can just keep pushing before it stalls
-
Deffinately pushing further north and east, the track is steady, can't see how it won't hit south Mcr, doesn't seem to be pivoting
-
Very light snow but starting to settle in hale,
-
Looking a knife edge stuff this, 6z upgrade, band further NW as others have stated.
Hopefully no more South and Eastwards corrections, surely it must be modelled something like by now
End of the day, if I get up and its snowing then great
-
Hi,
I think the Jan 10 event, which dropped about 20 cm for me in South Mcr was from an embedded trough in the NNW flow, could be wrong.
This is a different type of event, wasn't around the NW in 96, but seems the same rare occurance of a front bumping the cold that in entreanched on the surface and uppers.
I would expect 10cm and any more seen as a bonus.
Work for the power grid and now plan being circulated to deal with this.

Morning all. Here in South Manchester I'm expecting snow this afternoon through tonight, but then snow turning to rain fairly quickly tomorrow, washing any lying snow away. Given all the data I can see NAE/MetO/GFS I just can't see this being an all snow event west of the Pennines I'm afraid, especially if you are west of the M6. Once dewpoints rise above freezing that's it in terms of snow, and they're forecast to do so, from the west, early tomorrow. The data could all be wrong, but I'd be surprised.
JB, south Mcr too, seems the m6 is often the dividing line, also will interesting how the fronts interact with the surface cold when they push into it, sky looks "full of snow"
Further afield better hope long term for a GH which is always better for us
-
Yes would certainly take that chart, especially with the massive area of NW Scotland waiting in the wings.
Tbh I am very confident that all of the region will see snow from this event and the west may do very well out of it.
Hopefully the thread will change from will I get any to how much then on to OMG as time goes on.
Just checked the link and its updated since, even better with a more solid dark pink section ( there was a split in the heavy stuff before)
Starts Sunday after lunch, hope the game is ok

Looking good for Saturday, here in the south of the region, ie Mcr southward

6z NAE has us, S Manc, in the sweet spot though. Appologies if already discussed, a quick view during lunch
-
We got a a dusting then freezing rain that turned back to heavy snow for a while last weekend.
Seems a different orientation to the low this week, if it moves west a little we could be in the sweet spot.
NMM to watch then LL

Good covering here in hale, not loads but enough to white over the roads
Just not enough to be off work or school to close
GFS spot on
