  1. Gibbous Moon: Late afternoon clouds scudding across the daytime moon driven by today's gales. November 11th 2005, Milnathort, Kinrosshire.
  2. Wind rising, getting very gusty. Car thermometer reads 14.0C (this is November?? ). Dry with broken cloud, watery sun peeking through. Could be in for a bumpy ride!
  3. Sunset Rainbow, Bishop Hill, 4th. November 05
  4. Thanks for the link kar999. Nice active display continuing.
  5. Most citrus have two lots of blooms a year and hence almost constantly have fruit at some stage of development. Growth will be slower over winter so only water sparingly and never let the roots get waterlogged. They will need protection during winter so greenhouse, conservatory or a well aired windowsill is pretty essential. Give the plant as much light as possible but avoid draughts and hot/cold shocks from radiators, doors and other hot/cold sources when indoors. Use a balanced feed fortnightly in winter and a higher nitrogen feed weekly in summer. Dappled light shade is best if they are outside during summer. They also like a daily misting with water after the sun has set. Calamondins are beautifull plants and always have some interest whether it's fruit or the highly scented flowers. They can get a fair size, ~2m or more, but any prunings can be made into cuttings.
  6. Thanks for the link SnowBear. 50' is scary stuff , especialy when they are repeated over time - it can make new geography
  7. Buoy 42056 Wind Speed (WSPD): 58.3 kts Wind Gust (GST): 71.9 kts Wave height 36.1 feet How much water will be piling up trying to get through the Yucatan/Cuba gap?
  8. Hmmm... this is getting to be like a game of 'pin the tail on the donkey'
  9. I'm not well up with these things but does the latest visible loop in Mondy's link show the eye starting to clear now?
  10. Night all, thanks for the informative and fascinating day. Sweet dreams courtesy of the NRL
  11. Anyone got any ideas about possible tidal surge? We are just past a full moon so Spring tide could be an added dimension depending on timing and position of landfall.
  12. Yep! Be interested to see how they update that one. Cat2 may be optimistic (or pessimistic), depending where you live

  14. Could someone update me please? between going to bed last night and the news on radio this morning she went from Cat 1 poss 2 to a Cat 5! What happened?
  15. Ok, taken today. After all the recent rain, mushrooms and toadstools are popping up everywhere
  16. Steady rain all day, now it's tipping down!
  17. La! Mme. Guillotine awaits. Off with their heads! Dead heading prevents plants from putting their energy into producing seeds so they tend to bloom again later. (Durst we talk about the mysteries of feeding and re-potting I wonder?)
  18. I was born and dragged down ( ) in Guildford, Surrey and I can remember the freezing greenish foul tasting tar that used to form at nights. Smog was so thick one night my dad came wheezing home from work hours late. He'd to walk from the train station pushing his bike and a que of cars had followed him up the road. He could only see the curb by their headlights and all the drivers could see was the outline in front of them. We all paid a heavy price for our toasted crumpets in front of the open grate. I was 9 years old in '56 and by the time I moved to Scotland in '68 things had improved dramatically. If anyone doubts we can have an effect on the envionment they only have to investigate the smogs of the 50's
  19. Got down to 6.5C this afternoon at Milnathort, Kinrosshire. Driving slats of rain and windy (force 5/6? - some small twigs blown off trees beside exposed country roads) Thought there might have been some sleet mixed in the rain. I work outside in all weathers and that's the first time I've had to give in this autumn and retreat to the greenhouse for a hot coffee - it was only 10C in there!
  20. Green aphids seem to have been well down this year and they are a major food source for ladybirds (adults and larvae) so that could be limiting their numbers. I have seen a few ladybirds though. Most were holed up in some old lupins I had to remove so I've stacked them ready for burning come springtime after any ladybirds or hedgehogs come out of their winter quarters.
  21. Found this sat pic Hurricane Advisories : TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE & HURRICANE RITA (Sorry if it's already been posted)
  22. Thanks Wibs and SnowBear. This certainly looks like our man! I've scratched around the web and come up with various sites that list it from either highly poisonous to mildly toxic (no more so than green parts of tomato or potato) so I'm investigating further. It may however explain another mystery - the almost total absence of whitefly in the greenhouse this year though they are certainly in the garden. One site (unfortunately I've lost it) suggests it may be a control for whitefly so possibly it has a use as companion planting providing pets and children can be kept away from it. The plant originally apeared in the greenhouse until the flowers were so attractive I moved it outside but near the door. It's back inside again now.
