  1. Still got more than half cover, though its very wet and wont be around much longer if these rain showers keep piling in. A close call, but 2014 is out of thee no lying snow club.
  2. Still a few bits blowing around, snow still lyong but feels slushy. Could do with a clearance and drop in temp now.
  3. Snowing lightly again, that 1cm or so from earlier is still lying. Just stay till 9am tomorrow and its job done....
  4. About 40 minutes ago was belting with rain by junction 2-3 of the M54, with the car reading 1C. Then drizzly rain at Telford, suddenly turned to snow just past Wellington.
  5. Well I never. Heavy rain from London to Telford and this at home. Still snowing now
  6. Hows Shrewsbury looking? Do not want to drive back to find Telford white over and nothing back home. Happened far, far too many times in the past....
  7. Thats promising hope to see white when I get back tonight :-)
  8. Am I going to have fun driving back to Shrewsbury from Surrey this evening?
  9. Much better day, lots of sun and a bit colder, though still mild for late December. Now its clear and a nice crescent moon showing.
  10. 2010. Always 2010. 15cm of snow on the ground, the Severn frozen, went into work at 7.30 and the car read -12C right in the middle of town. Continuous snow cover from the 17th to 28th. 2004 second, although the snow didnt arrive till the evening it was nice to see it fall and settle on the day. Only lasted 2 days though, the rest of the winter was mild and grim. 1995 had a week of frost from the 24th but no snow, that had gone on the 23rd and came back on the 30th. If it hadnt been for that horrid mild day melting the snow on the 23rd it would have rivalled 2010. 1992 I remember being very frosty with freezing fog and rime, a rare event that winter which was nearly devoid of cold and snow. 2006- a horrid December but the 25th was frosty. Worst would be either 2002 or 2011, both ridiculously mild and very dull.
  11. Is this wind ever going to drop? 3rd consecutive howling noght, and not been below 10C since early Sunday. Feels more October than Christmas.
  12. Must have been colder than what was there, as everything else gave no snow. And that rain from the north a few days before, which came from cold air hitting cold air, summed up that month.
  13. Settling snow from the south I can remember once, the night of 23-24 Dec 2009. For the previous two weeks it had snowed everywhere but here on a series of N, W and E winds but we had jack time and again. The weekend before it rained from the north when everywhere else had snow. So it was a nice surprise when this system came up from the south and produced lying snow. It didnt last as it turned milder late on the 24th but at least we finally managed one day of lying snow that awful month, and it was the southerly that did it when the snowy directions failed time and again. Dont I hate it when people say December 2009 was snowy- they should have been here! From the west isnt that uncommon traditionally, rain hitting cold air. Can give us some good dumpings like 12th March 2006, but also a few.spectacular failures like 4th Feb 2012 (again snow seemingly everywhere else, at least to the east of here)
  14. There have only been 5 or 6 days of daylight in the last 2 months! Its got to the stage where my body really doesnt know if its day or night, waking up at 5am and trying to sleep in the afternoon. Someone remimd me what weather we've had since August? 4 or 5 frosty nights is all I.can think of.
  15. No frost here last night, it was completely cloudy by 10pm. Was sunny earlier but gone grey now, not looking forward to the forecast mild muck at akl.
  16. An hour ago it was clear and frosty, now looked outside and it's raining lightly. WTF??? If Subfreezing air can't turn it to snow, what on earth can?
  17. Probably an 8- a functioning snowaholic. Watching everywhere else get snow while I have none (hello winter 2009/10) is like going on a pub crawl with 20 people and being forced to drink mineral water all night.
  18. Still raining! And even milder than yesterday. Where's this cold air gone now then? Back to Iceland?
  19. Thats the problem with Britain, it is supposed to snow reliably at latitudes where days get this short. Nowhere else on earth is so snowless at such a high latitude, especially northern Britain. 60 degrees is subarctic.
  20. Just been over to Barmouth (as you do on a wet December evening) and there is no snow whatsoever in Wales, even at 350m on the road between Mallwyd and Dolgellau. Just driving rain and wind. The temp up there was 5C, exactly the same as in Shrewsbury. Obviously no cold upper air at all then.
  21. Just had a shower with a few blobs of sleet in it, nothing to rave about but its a start......
  22. Yes that's the curse of the so called "polar maritime" air- the temp won't drop unless the wind goes away, but if it does no showers will reach us.
  23. It's probably a Geminid. They are noticeably slow moving and peak in December- I remember seeing loads last year. Best time should be next weekend when the moon won't be there till the early hours.
  24. January 1984 which keeps getting mentioned, here are the number of snow lying days and the mad depth in cm, from the Metoffice snowsurvey: Aviemore 29/33 Edinburgh 17/13 Eskdalemuir 23/66 Gosforth 15/15 Boulmer 7/4 Leeming 10/17 Bacup 18/61 Ringway 7/11 Blackpool 1/2 Shawbury 5/4 Lake Vyrnwy 18/25 Swansea 2/1 Brize Norton 1/1 Teddington 0/0 It was rubbish south of the Midlands, and even north of that ridiculously dependent on altitude and distance from the coast
