  1. Dont get excited aboit that band in Shropshire. Its wet non sticky snow, and unbelievably is trying to melt the cover we already have. Snow melting snow, only in Britain! Whiteouts being reported in Manchester area same height as here, whats wrong with the Midlands?
  2. If mild uppers are on the western side of the low that means theyre coming from the north? Not what you expect in this hemisphere. I just hope this isnt last Wednesday all over again....
  3. (says word that rhymes with rugger) Are there colder ones behind it though?
  4. Just looked outside as something is falling- and its very wet snow, on the verge of being sleet. Dont say this thing is pulling down warmer upperd or something, that snow we had earlier was of the dry powdery kind.
  5. Temps must have dropped because that sugar dusting we got earlier this evening is still there, and its going icy. Still have the remains of this afternoons snow where the sun didnt get it. Roads will be interesting in the morning if it stays like that...
  6. Showers are still of snow and they stick, but it still keeps melting in between them despite the sun setting hours ago. The air temp just refuses to go below zero, even at night.
  7. Snowing here again, and sticking. Really fine almost powdery snow but coming down well.
  8. Probably sheltered by the Wrekin in northerlies. It's only about 40m down by the river there, though nearer 100 up on the sides of the gorge. Managed to settle here at 95m, melting in the sun but still there in the shade.
  9. Stopped now, wonder how long it will last as the suns out. First time snow has settled in the middle of the day since Jan 2013.
  10. This has put down about a cm in 15 minutes. Very impressive given the less than favourable conditions.
  11. Really quite big flakes now, starting to give a proper covering again
  12. Suddenly quite heavy snow, attempting bravely to stick but itll have a job considering the wet ground and lack of frost this winter! This mornings snow had gone by midday, sun took half an hour, again we cant buy a cold maximum, despite uppers obviously being OK. Grass is a whiter shade of green now at least....
  13. Crazy, its snowing here! Elevation difference is about 40m.
  14. Nothing at all? Definite covering in Bomere Heath. We got lucky by 5 miles then....
  15. First pre 8am sunrise today, sunset is now nearly an hour later than at the solstice. Noticed the sun around 4.30pm a couple of times this week.
  16. Trying to snow again, though nowhere near enough to top it up. Hang on, just got a bit heavier... Wouldn't bet on the covering lasting past 11am though, it's barely been below freezing.
  17. There's the all important 9am and it's still on the ground, so day 2 this month and 3 this winter. Will we ever get 2 consecutive days? Suspect this will go as soon as the sun comes out... This month is now snowier here than December 2009 which some people from other parts rave about.
  18. We have a sprinkling of snow. Only 0.5cm or so but it's managed to lie and a few flakes are still drifting down. Very surprised indeed.
  19. Nothing at all here this evening bar that bloody annoying wind. Radar keeps showing echoes but nothing is falling. And it's still +3C!
  20. Yes why do we get these ridiculous lapse rates with PM air that make 300m altitude so significant? -7 at 850mb and +3 at 100m is about 9C/km. I thought it was normally around 6C/km, with only fohn setups giving 9 or 10C. -7 is usually OK in Arctic Maritime, despite the sea track.
  21. Apparently the uppers at the moment are -7, if that's the case why is the temperature still above freezing? We had a snow shower earlier so the uppers are obviously OK as are dps, just the damn temperature refuses to drop yet again. Dry and clear now and still 3C. Any snow won't stick in that unless it's really heavy and does the evap cooling thing. This "polar maritime" air is nearly always junk below 300m. It either gives temps that won't drop below 1 or 2C despite cold uppers and low dps, or it gives rain at temperatures of 1 or 2C. Once in a blue moon it produces a temporary cover (14th Jan), but only like 1 in 10 occurrences does that. High ground. Always bloody high ground with this PM stuff. If it likes mountains so much why doesn't it eff off to Nepal or somewhere, they're much higher than the Pennines!
  22. It's snow! Just reached here. Had horizontal rain, sleet, hail and graupel here today so far. This latest shower is snow.
  23. 1994 was definitely the best example here. Not only the first proper snow that winter (bar a dusting one day in Nov) but the first for 3 years. Feb 2012 was a complete non event, everywhere else seems to have got snow on the 4th but we somehow got hours of rain at 0C. Disgusting. We did get 1cm on the 19th but that was it. 2009 was less snowy than 1994 and had had sone decent frosts beforehand. I agree with 2007 though, it hardly had any wintry weather till those three days in Feb.
  24. About the headlights- it's really getting lighter for me when 3pm football kickoffs dont use the floodlights at all. Theoretically should be possible from late Jan in the south and mid Feb in Scotland, but they often seem to use them into March even in London.
  25. Whats with all there reports of -5s, we only just touched 0 because the stupid cloud refused to do one yet again. No -5 here since March 2013, and no -7 since Dec 2010. Cannot remember such a long spell without a really cold night.
