  1. Seems to have got warmer in last hour as wind picked up, will be hard pressed to get anything wintry tonight at this rate. Even if uppers play ball nothing is going to lie if temps at ground level refuse to fall below 1-3C....
  2. Please listen to them BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. In 20 years time there won't be many left who can remember before the war. You do hear fascinating things from 80+ year olds, like that the estate where I used to live was a lake in the 1920s. Which would explain the water table being about 3 inches deep and the standing water that formed every time it rained.
  3. What's been another notable feature of January is the homogeneity of maxima- there have been none below 5C or above 11C, with more than half in the 7-9C range. The total temperature range all month is only about 14C which is one of the lowest of any month in recent years- the other two months which stand out for this, October 2004 and August 2008, were both much duller relative to average than this one. Clear nights where the temperature didn't drop as one would expect have been a plague this winter.
  4. That means it was pretty much overhead. Was there hail, and how long did it last?
  5. Back now to totally clear skies- can't believe the big T decided to drop in when I was out!!!!
  6. Right I'm not in Shrewsbury today but South Wales- have I missed something exciting?
  7. Grim wet murky 6C- been drizzling all day but now raining again. Absolutely do not need any more rain now, drains are overflowing and the grass is like a wet sponge.
  8. Had a few drops this morning but most of the rain stayed over Wales... now as for next week- any chance of Cheshire gap snow showers? They are always the best hope in a NW-ly but the wind must be right, too much W and they pile into the Pennines instead. Very, very optimistically- a repeat of Xmas day 2004???
  9. It was small hail, that's if it was the same shower I drove through just SW of your location about 7.15. Nothing at all here, WNW is a useless wind direction except for Manchester/Peak/N Staffs. And here comes the cloud just as a frost was starting to form....
  10. 8C and sunny here- a bit of cold rain earlier. No snow visible on any hills round here, the highest are over 500m, very surprised to here the reports of snow at 300m not much further north... would have guessed freezing level to be about 1000m now.
  11. Gone quite sunny here, mild again though. The lack of low maxima really is the defining feature of this winter now, even those 90s rotters had the odd day of freezing fog and low maxima. The lowest this "winter" was way back on November 19th with 5C, and that's been exceeded again today. We have had lower maxima than that in several April's.
  12. More rain.... that dry spell was nice while it lasted, all of 48 hours
  13. February 2011 was so far the only snowless winter month of the 2010s here, and the first snowless Feb since 2000. Only 2 air frosts as well and several 10C+ days- all in all a shocker. Further east it may have been a Se'ly month, here it was almost completely Sw'ly as I recall. The last day with snow falling that winter was 7th January- none at all in spring for the first time since 2002. But December seriously made up for it...
  14. Clear as a bell here, no wind, but yet again not freezing, save a thin layer on the windscreen. 2C still.
  15. Yes there were some ice days here in 91-2, it certainly wasn't the mildest winter of all. Just all the cold spells were bone dry. 1992-3 had no lying snow here either, despite quite a cold December. We got one day in Nov 1993 that was the first since Feb 1991, that's a easily the longest spell without lying snow I remember.
  16. Did anywhere in England or Wales below 300m get a morning with lying snow in 1991/2? York, Kent, Armagh, Edinburgh and Anglesey (those two I know from other sites) all failed, so did here- I don't even remember seeing any on the hills that year.
  17. Quite easy with English and the German weather words I've learnt from Wetterzentrale (tryk=Boden*druck*). Love the way temperatures "crawl up the scale" instead of boring BBC speak "gradually rising". And the "monthshift"- that should be an English word!
  18. Mild, gunky drizzly rubbish. Probably a fortnight of this now as payback for that 30 minute snowy surprise the other night...
  19. That first warm sunny day of spring when the shorts come out for the first time... Usually in April, but 2012 was late March and 2013, 7th May. 17C in April sunshine feels so much warmer than 17C under August cloud or June rain. I hate, almost every year, mid Oct through mid Nov. Too late for heat, too early for cold and snow, very rarely any long anticyclonic spells- last year's 37 consecutive rain days in that period was a new low.
  20. A nice frost here this morning, still bits of last night's snow around in some spots. Was expecting to just find everything wet to be honest.
  21. Lol we still have some slushy snow out there, sad git that I am I've just collected another handful and put it in the freezer so I have a sample of winter 13/14 snow
  22. Not so sure about that.. almost passed from here and back to drizzle, not cold enough for frost. Was a nice surprise while it lasted though!
  23. Can confirm snow here in northern outskirts of Shrewsbury. Briefly settled on grass, cars and bins but passed quite quickly and turned back to sleet now.
  24. Yes it's moving your way. Judging by the radar it's only going to be a very brief thing but if there are still flakes coming down after midnight it's 2 snow days in Jan 2014! Edit 00:01 and it is! Turning to more sleet now though as it passes.
