  1. There may be ice on the ground, but the temperature isn't dropping properly. 2C air temperature now, even though it's been clear and calm for 6 hours. This has been a constant theme of 2013- lack of really cold nights despite plenty of cold setups. Despite all that snow in Jan and Mar we were hard-pressed to see anything below -2C, and only managed one night in March below -5.
  2. And it was an absolute joke that Christmas Day 2010, with a minimum of -12C and 15cm of snow on the ground, would not have paid out at the bookies while that day would. The weather equivalent of John Terry' s prancing about with the Champions League trophy while the guys that actually played skulked in the background
  3. Rain again now- as for cheering up well I do try, but after over 20 years here and so many letdowns optimism doesn't come easily. Remember Christmas Day 1999 with its one sleet shower- that was it for wintry precipitation that winter :-)
  4. It has turned sleety in a heavier burst (wow, it is December after all) but nothing to get excited. It'll have to get a darn sight colder to have any chance of accumulating, especially with the ground so wet
  5. It's arrived- and it's plain old boring rain. Even if it does turn to sleet/snow in heavier bursts it'll never lie- what's the point of non-sticking snow?
  6. I drove through that hail and rain on the way back from Stoke about 8pm, hit it around Ashleyheath/Loggerheads. Dreadful driving conditions, had to go down to below 30 on a 60mph roads and the visibility was less than 50m.
  7. Going by the climate-uk figures Oct/Nov/Dec is going to come out significantly warmer than Mar/April/May, unless there's a big cold snap coming; even if Dec goes down to 5C it will be about 1.2 warmer. Dec needs to be under 2C for it to come out colder. 2006 and 1986 seem like the only other occurrences recently, and they were by much less.
  8. If the Vulkan Eifel in Germany goes off, like it will again sometime..... About 300 miles from London.
  9. Loads of them about tonight, have seen about 6 or 7 in last 10 mins despite Moon interference. If you have clear skies get looking!
  10. It might have been sunny in the west, but in the North-East where I was at the time this was an absolute stinker. All it brought was day after day and night after night of thick cloud and temperatures around 5C, not a flake of snow or glimmer of sun in sight. Plus it came on the back of a really rotten November that consisted entirely of damp, dull, mild Atlantic southerlies and southwesterlies; a cloudy wet mild pattern was just replaced by a cloudy cool dry one. There was hardly any sun for about 4 weeks.
  11. Milder winters don't always mean good summers: the nadir of the 20 years without a winter was probably the period 1998-2000 and those summers, except July 1999, were pretty crap (although not as bad as 2007-12). My instinct is we're going to see another winter with all the snow/cold in the second half: there has hardly been a flake of snow in Decembers since 2010, just like there wasn't for several years after 1981- and those winters weren't all mild.
  12. Cheshire Gap set up would be nice (as long as the wind isn't too westerly) but will it be cold enough, and able to stick? It hasn't been below freezing for more than a few hours at a time yet, and what are the uppers looking like? No use having the right synoptics if all we get is 3C and sleety non-sticky stuff.
  13. Cold air, where art thou? Just spits of rain at the moment- the main thing isn't any cold, it's this wind which has got worse in the last 2 hours and must be close to gale force now. Certainly the strongest wind this autumn.
  14. Rain and howling wind here, doesn't seem anywhere near cold enough for snow. We did get a few sleety bits in the rain this morning, but its got warmer since then. Are the 850s much colder over Yorkshire or something, its weird how its sticking low down there but its rain and sleet everywhere else
  15. Has dipped to-0.5, but cloud is already encroaching. Why can't it stay clear all night, we haven't had one frosty morning so far! Cloud please bring settling snow or just stay away!
  16. Ha ha rain and howling wind. What a surprise..... Temp dropped to 1C but has risen since this lot arrived- pathetic Autumn continues.
  17. It's clear at last, maybe a frost finally? But doubt any snow will stick, the ground is just saturated and must be very warm for the time of year, nothing short of a 27 Nov 10 blast would overcome it. Need a run of frosty nights first.
  18. Not sure about the Balearics, it was that rugby match in the snow in Rome that sticks in my mind. I remember Jerusalem getting a massive dump of snow in one of those awful late 90s winters (98/99 or maybe 99/00?), seeing the pictures and thinking "it hasn't done that here in years".
  19. Feb 4th 2012 that was it, all we got was hours of rain with a few ice pellets. The deep cold just wouldn't move far enough west, Wales had rain as well even on the hills.
  20. Yes winter 2011-12 was infuriating for the former, cold all over Europe but only reached eastern Britain for a few days, and didn't really make it here at all. Seeing that snow in Rome just after we'd had rain on that Saturday it was supposed to snow just summed up that winter perfectly!
  21. Finally we managed a rain-free day, first since 9th October. Almost worth celebrating except I see those dreaded words "anticyclonic gloom"- that would just be the maggots on the rubbish if we ended up with a load of that after finally finishing this epic wet spell. Clear, frosty nights and sunny days please if we get a dry anticyclone!
  22. Dull, dull, dull but dry so far. Will today finally be dry? Yesterday just had a bit of early drizzle, so getting there. Very, very tedious Autumn, every attempt at a frost has been spoilt by cloud invading before sunrise.
  23. Horrendous morning, howling wind and heavy showers what seemed like every 5 minutes. Brighter now but for how long? 36 days now..
  24. Just light/moderate showers here this evening, clear now but still the wait for a rain-free day goes on.
  25. Clear skies since dusk, no cloud near us on the Sat pics, surely an air frost tonight???? Temperatures on the MO site still seem reluctant to fall, with most of the Midlands around 3C still at 2200.
