  1. So what happens if the Met office issue a weather warning for extreme cold/ice/heavy snow and meteo group/main BBC forecast says dry no snow 4C
  2. An even greater problem, is that for many people, what the weather apps say is their primary source of information on the weather. One of the 'community' groups i'm involved with will be having a few early spring walks/late winter , one on Wednesday and another the first weekend of March, with some encouraging lines such as " enjoy the last of the snowdrops, and the fresh budding daffodils as the sun regains its warmth from its winter slumber" Even had a message saying that all is still on, and to ignore the media hype as the BBC weather app is showing dry ( but not possibly not as warm as previous years)
  3. It will be interesting if the BBCs all new partner, Meteo group say nothing to worry about, and the met office start issuing warnings for ice/snow/cold. BBC Forecast - Earlier on today someone apparently from Exeter phoned the BBC and said there was some seriously cold weather on the way, well if your watching, don't worry there isn't; but having said that the weather will become a little cooler into next week, but most of the cold weather will remain in the continent with just a few early morning frosts.................... ........... for the latest forecast why not take a look at the BBC weather app
  4. The usual, Model promise some interesting weather ( ie big cold spell typically from the east) then do a u turn as we get closer, it usualy pans out as follows: Models pick up on major winter event several upgrades that seem to keep comming as the 5 day marker approaches models start to moderate the extreme severe weather, or even change completely ( bye bye interesting weather) all appears to be game over, with much gnashing of teeth Models then do another slight u turn,, and we get a little bit of sleet, maybe a tiny bit of snow, but nothing on the scale of what was originally predicted,
  5. BBc are still sticking to their guns - temperatures a few degrees above freezing and cloudy, the app continues in the same vein - cooler but nothing drastic
  6. Got a few outdoor events planned coming up soon, first is the middle of next week, as an early spring walk (feel the warmth of the early spring sunshine?) The main group of people organising them are convinced that the BBC weather app is correct (im not so convinced) when will the main weather warnings come out?
  7. I keep expecting to see the models do the usual u turn, and flipping to mild mus, before going back to some cooler but not as cold as modelled weather, a little bit of sleet perhaps, a litle bit of snow on the ground for an hour or so before the sun melts it, when will the U turn in the models occur?
  8. I know the apps vary in reliability, however much as i would like a weather event i know a few people who are event planning based on the info on the BBC weather app, for of all things an early Spring walk in early march, containing the line: feel the warmth come back with an early spring walk, among the budding plants, snowdrops, animals and birds wakening up from their winter slumber, the first walk is a week on Thursday, the second main walk on the first weekend of march
  9. The model discussion thread is full on ramp mode, meanwhile the BBC weather app is having non of it, showing for the week commencing 26th February temperatures about 3c rising to 5c later with overnights at about zero, mostly overcast (Nottingham and Derby )
  10. Im not getting too excited, seen it loads of times on here, when the model thread shows snowmageddon them does an about turn with downgrades left right and centre, before delivering a few scattered bouts of snow and sleet. On the subject of the past, whatever happened to Mr Crazy Snowfan?
  11. Whats this storm we're supposed to be having? It seems that the met office will issue warnings, then nothing happens.
  12. When i was younger, i remember being warned not to eat the yellow snow. now the metoffice are also doing so (met office app/weather warnings/show all UK warnings)
  13. very light snow at the moment, temp zero dp-1. cleared the path of snow a couple of hours ago - no snow has settled on it, and its still clear
  14. It all depends on how long ago/many years ago it was since last logged in Seems to have fizzled out, however the radar shows more coming from the West. Temp zero, DP-1 east mids airport still closed for snow clearance!
  15. I've seen plenty of talk of a snow shield in certain places, where I am theres more of a snow filter, when there's snow in the area filtering out all the good stuff.
  16. Snow band appears to be breaking up, looks like it will soon stop altogether
  17. East midlands airport weather suggests Lightsnow ( now) Snow, then heavy snow, birmingham Snow, light snow, snow, heavy snow From what i understand these are compiled from a metrologist at the airport East midlands airport : http://en.allmetsat.com/metar-taf/united-kingdom-ireland.php?icao=EGNX Birmingham: http://en.allmetsat.com/metar-taf/united-kingdom-ireland.php?icao=EGBB
  18. You can check on this live map from Western power distribution covers Midlands, South Wales and the South west https://www.westernpower.co.uk/Power-outages/What-s-Happening/Power-Cut-Map.aspx Currently tiny flakes of snow in my area, with a reasonable coverage just outside east midlands airport where the runway is currently closed for snow clearing operation
  19. if your are using chrome, hit the menu three dots and select request desktop site. as for the snow, I'm expecting a snow to rain event, then anything else is a bonus. Long time since I posted on here, what happened to Mr crazy snowfan?
  20. Being in the deep south part of Derbyshire, there was no lying snow from this so called cold spell, only a few soggy flakes, So i headed to the other end of the county this weekend, to the Dark peak with its moors, and steep hills ( on a planned trip not to see snow but it would have been nice) and all the snow had gone. Back donw in the southern bit, firmly lodged in the snow proof shallow sided trent valley.
  21. No snow in this little section of the East midlands - frosty yes but thats about it.
  22. Today has been another non event for this part of Derbyshire, the snow sheild may have malfunctioned in that theres been falling snow, but its not fallen for landg, and what has has soon vanished when it hit the wet ground.
  23. In recent years, possibly fueled by the demands of instant 24 hour news there does seem to be a little hype with weather events with some of them either not materilising, or being far tamer than predicted. As for camping in bad weather - high winds rain etc its all down to what type of tent you have. With Nylon type tents that have bendy poles that you have to thread through - if these are higher than your chest then they are next to useless in high winds+ rain. when the wind blows they flaten, and if its raining then they can let water through as the inner section touches/makes contact with the outer ( flysheet) If the tent is lower then it has a better chance - but i would advise that you use wooden pegs on the main guy lines/where ever possible. With Nylon tents - as a rule of thumb, if you can stand up in your tent, then it wont stand up in a storm. If the tent is old school canvas then make sure you put it up with the back of the tent facing the wind, and thr door at the other end - this will help prevent water/rain driving through the door gaps/zips and make sure that it is well pegged out in some good ground. If you have a 'hike' tent and you have put it up correctly in a good spot then you should be OK in most bad weather situations. its all down to your choice of where you site your tent
  24. Just been to Ticknall, while the snow in the sothern/trent valley part of Derbyshire is nothing like it is up north, and the roads are mostly clear, there are a few bits of road with some snow on attached ( if it works) Ingleby road, Ticknall looking each way Pcture on left, Ingleby road, Ticknall - looking towards Ingleby/Swarkeston Bridge, on the Right, looking down the road towards Ticknall ( comes out near the village hall car park/The Wheel inn) all mian and some not so main roads clear of snow - ingleby Road is the only exception to this.
  25. Just about to cover my car just in case, although thats usualy the kiss of death for snow events.
