  1. Very happy!

First snowfall of the winter and first day with snow lying in London at 9am since 2005 and also first frost of winter 2006/7 (-.6 deg C). Only the one frost though.

Nice to see the white stuff can still penetrate the heart of the Metropolis even in the GW era.

Yeti, there was no snowfall in London in Feb March 06, in Dec 05 we had less than an inch , Jan 04 we had maybe an inch and a half one evening but was melted by the next lunchtime. snow is rare in London . The last time there was 8 inches or more was in 1991, before that, 1963.

It's funny how a few miles make a difference. My brother lives in Darmouth Park near the back end of Hamsptead Heath and he's had 3 frosts this week alone, the coldest being -2.3C. He'd a good inch an half of snow the other morning. Is this another north vs south london thing ? :)

  2. Well I've been most disappointed. I was hoping to get a decent covering last night but what did I get? A sprinkle at best. On the plus side I did have my hardest frost so far this year. Got down to -3.1 at 11:50 pm Clouds are bubbling up now though so maybe I'll get something in a bit.

    Currently 2.C precisely.

  3. My top tip is cyclamen. They are everywhere at the moment (some are beautifully scented) and work well out doors esp in tubs. In terms of bulbs i have some dwarf iris which seem to come up these days before snow drops in bring colour in early/mid jan.

Winter flowering pansies are good as other people have mentioned but can be popular with any slugs still around. If you've the right soil some heathers will flower for you too.

You could also try things that get berries. There's a shrub called Callicarpa which has unusual purple berries that last throughout the winter and it has a smallish habit so easily grown in a tub. Wych Hazel also gives some winter colour if you've more room.

Other small shrubs that can work well with nice flowers (some scented) are viburnums winter jasmines and winter box which has highly wscentede flowers from chrismtas til about Feb...

Use to work in a garden centre.. Hope this helps

  4. Perishingly cold here still was up at -1.4C about 11 but now gone back down -2.2C .. Mist gone but had a few snow grains... Very quiet and still birds and animals doing a thing.. Chickens refusing to leave the coop, giving me that 'you must be mad kind of look.. Don't blame them !

  5. Lovely crisp whiteness this morning. I recorded an overnight low of - 2.7 C and the chickens didn't much fancy coming out until gone 10 this morning - normally they're up and out as soon as i open the hutch door.... See what tonight brings I reckon i might just manage a -4
