  1. Official M.O station in Hastings has 73mm since "child of Nadine" arrived. 25.7mm of that fell between last night from 1700 until 1300 today.
  2. Perfect spot. I grew up in Fairlight and mum still lives in the village. Just be careful of that country park when taking a camera.....lets just say other types of "enthusiast" use that car park at night. Flashing lights arnt always from the sky.!
  3. turning to wet snow here in Hastings now with temps falling away to 3c
  4. -7c here now out in the Countryside near Hastings. Still 3 inches of snow after yesterdays small thaw. dewpoint (-4) so right back in the freezer. BBC calling for a maximum of -1c here today. That would be the fourth ice day here from this cold spell.
  5. -2c here on the Hastings coast. 5 inches of snow going nowhere today. amazing how the sub zeros are staying along the sussex and kent coasts due to our close proximety to France.
  6. Heavy snow. great big flakes really building up the depth here on the South coast, over 2 inches.
  7. it started as pure snow at 10pm and started sticking from the off. its getting progressively heavier as i type and there are blizzard conditions on the seafront!!.All roads covered in snow and taking on the look of an alpine landscape.
  8. yup, right on hastings seafront. just over an inch and starting to get heavy in the last 10 minutes. and drifting in a SE wind. strange to see driving snow blowing off the channel. its sticking well on the beach too.
  9. heavy snow in Hastings. sticking well. pushing toward an inch.
  10. yes, gusts cranking up again here in the last half hour. Any sort of cloud cover seems to prompt this. Under blue sky it is much calmer. Just had a 53mph on the Ano. scratch that, just had a 58mph!
  11. I was refering to public funded organisations such as the M.O and BBC. Amateur forecasters seem to be 2.0 up this week.
  12. Certainly not what was expected by the M.O though surely? Nowhere were predictions of gusts in excess of 80mph mentioned. Infact the talk was of 60mph gusts in places. Given the tendency to over egg severe weather forecast episodes that we have seen in recent years from the M.O, i would have expected them to call for gusts as high as 80mph, perhaps 90mph in their forecasts yesterday. They were clearly caught out for the second time in a week by wind....
  13. I would agree there. GFS 06z has improved CAPE/Lift values compared to recent runs with the extreme SE showing precipitation and decent values between midnight and 6am. This far from all over with regards potential for some tonight imo.
  14. Are you talking about the Hastings country park? The area known locally as the Firehills? Thats where i'll be. As you say high ground with panaramic views over the channel to the East/SE and West and also inland.
  15. rather unexpected but an impressive cell just came ashore. Two overhead cracks of thunder (real houseshakers) and plenty of more distant rumbles. Two amazing forks prior to the overhead thunder. Some heavy convective rainfall thrown in
  16. reguler channel thunder booming just off the coast here in Hastings now. The last rumble shook the walls of my flat. Getting nearer and more frequent in the last half hour. Come on dusk, i want to see that lightning!
  17. Just to give some background on the topography. The high ground of the South Downs just to our West, just to the east of Hastings, we have some of the highest ground in Sussex up at Fairlight, known locally as the firehills. The 2007 Supercell and todays if confirmed, followed the same track. A southerly aproach off the channel to Hastings town (low ground) then movement East toward Folkestone along the coast, crossing that high ground of Fairlight. Not sure if that helps?
  18. yup, cracking storm just gone through here in Hastings.Very electrical with a gust front ahead of it. much fork lightning and 10mm of rain in 6 minutes.
  19. some sheet lightning in the channel off the Hastings coast at 1700, a couple of rumbles of thunder. Large "thunder spots" as the rain lashed down between 5-6pm
  20. Its funny seing you say that about the Frosty white glow. I had just made my mind up to pop out and soak that up later, its not all about watching the snow fall from the sky at a time like this  you would have been forgiven for mistaking the Firehills for an Arctic wasteland eariler, blowing drifting/falling snow. White out conditions.
  21. I left home at 0830, and wandered slowly up there. Got home half an hour ago, very cold but thrilled at what i had witnessed. From the Coastgaurd cottages and the old lookout station you can see across to Dover as you say. So of course i stood there in blowing snow watching the next snow shower head for me across the marshes then Wham, another blizzard.Certainly better than radar watching! The worst drifts were by the cottages, folk litteraly digging there cars out. A memorable event would be an understatement...and still snowing here. Yes, ive spent most of the morning snapping away and filming. I stood there filming these poor folk trying to dig there car out of a drift, i had to lend a hand of course rather than just wander off into the blizzard again!
  22. 8 inches of snow here, and still falling, although lighter now. Snow drifts of up to five foot in Hastings Country park (very high ground exposed to the Northeaster) Biggest drifts i have seen since the 1980s here.
  23. yes, pushing toward 7 inches i would say, and the biggest snowfall since the 1988s here. almost 14 hrs of near continous heavy snow now and still going. Winds are gale force, there must be huge drifts...no thundersnow here yet, but musnt be gready!
  24. it has sent me rather manic, the pure adrenalin of this whole affair is keeping me awake, i can hardly believe my eyes when i go outside. Definatly the best of winter 09/10 so far here, if only because of the blowing snow, added to an already heady mix.
  25. Hi, My mum is out at Fairlight. Lower waites lane if you know it? Anyway, up on Battery hill and Fairlight road the snow has blown into drifts, almost cutting the village off. If it carrys on like this all night they will be cut off out there. Only a 4x4 Could reach it now tbh.
