  1. Correct...but re-read my post....I am inferring, not saying.......although I will stick my neck out and am willing to place a a £100 bet, that life, albeit maybe only single-cellular, will be discovered on Europa when NASA launch their proposed submersible probe there (sometime around 2020 I believe)....any takers?
  2. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/0803...itan-ocean.html Interesting article on space.com..... It's been long suspected that a deep water ocean exists under the ice sheet on the Jovian moon Europa, scientists are now hypothesizing deep water oceans under the surface of Tethys, Enceladus, and now Titan....as well as spectroscopic analysis showing the existence of water vapour in the atmosphere of the extra-solar planet 'HD 189733b'.......Water it seems, is then a very common molecule found on other worlds.....Being a key ingredient in the existence of life, it, in my opinion, infers that life elsewhere could be far more likely to exist or has existed than we currently think
  3. Oooh, I'm not so sure about more challenging terrain?...my poor legs still ache!
  4. Good morning all Just thought I'd share with you a variety of scenic & cloud pictures taken yesterday whilst hill walking with my family on the Penine Way towards Snake Pass to the south east of Glossop. It was a truely breathtaking walk, with plenty of lovely Cb shower clouds. We luckily missed most of them but did get one heavy snow/grauple shower whilst at 1963ft asl..... I used a bog standard Samsung L830, but used a variety of different shooting modes for experimentation...A few of the photo's have been run through Picasa2 just to tweak the contrasts to give them a more 3-dimensional feel, but the majority were as they were taken.... Being still a relative newbie with photography I would welcome any tips and advice for the more seasoned photographers to hone my skills Btw, the dodgy looking mug posing in the last photo is me!...Sorry for polluting my image on the forum!
  5. Just awoke here to moderate sleety/snowl, about 1cm so far
  6. Flippin 'eck!....we had thunder and lightning here earlier, about 4:40 this morning..It blew an absolute gale with lots of hail.....NW extra radar supports this......Looks like a very active shower band passes through and its making its wasy south through avon/somerset towards the home counties
  7. Looks like the midwest has taken a pounding the past few days....flash flooding has resulted in 13 fatalities so far.. http://www.weather.com/newscenter/topstori...ml?from=hp_news
  8. yep, looks like a regular dissipating Cb with anvil....Looks like an optical illusion has been created giving the effect that its raining over the sea, but on closer inspection, the rain looks to be several miles inland
  9. Hi Phil , it bottomed out here at 956.6mb about an hour ago.....now 958.8 and rising.....I'm approx 80m above sea level here ...and absolutely dead calm, no wind at all
  10. Hi Phil, just about 30 miles to your NW... Current stats for Penkridge.. air temp 7.5C dew point 3.4C Winds SSE at 17mph, gusting 25mph, switching from SSW earlier pressure 958.8 mb and steady overcast with steady moderate rain with a sleety mix Looking at wind direction change and pressure readings, I'd take an educated guess that the low pressure centre is close by now
  11. Penkridge, staffs Sunny 5.7C dew point 3.7C Wind SSW 7mph pressure 962.6 mb and falling Rainfall since 0000z 5.2mm
  12. Damn! Lou and Stu beat me to the nice pics comment B) Who needs pics of active volcanoes, hurricanes, sunsets, and the ilk, when you just cant beat some good photo's of the Great British countryside.... B) last pic is the one for me...why?....just a lovely contrast foreground and background
  13. Some stunning panoramic photo's there. I especially like the eighth photo along, as it shows a really nice contrast between a rural moorland and urban conurbation in the distance below
  14. Thanks for the link Paul......I think thats what it was
  15. Is that just a cirrus band, or are they noctilucent clouds........over to the experts......
  16. http://www.flightlevel350.com/Aircraft_Boe...Video-8457.html Then there's this footage shot at Manchester airport which just goes to show the incredible level of skill & professionalism shown by aircrew and air traffic controllers/fire service....All in a days work for these guys!
  17. I guess its to do with how your uploading your photos or which hosting site is used...I know with servimg you can change your photo size.....800x600, 640x480, or 250x150 thumbnail image and then cut and paste the relevant bbcode link
  18. Hi, I've seen this term mentioned several times before in the forum, but I'm not exactly sure what it is......Is it like sleet, or ice pellets?......The reason I ask is that I was driving back from cannock earlier this afternoon, and there was a sudden shower of what I can only describe as 'hard' snow....It was bouncing off the road and then laying, but was splatting on my windscreen like normal snow would do...Is that grauple?......(if its any help, it was about 7 degrees at the time) Cheers
  19. I totally agree Lou, well put! If my memory is correct, there were some piccies posted last summer of a morning thunderstorm in the english channel, by someone who's name escapes me (think it was a guest who forwarded them on) and everyone was marvelling how technically incredible and wonderful they were, yet to my untrained eye, they looked photoshopped up to the eyeballs, but the critques missed that simple point, and I was pm'd and basically told to shut up as I didnt know what I was talking about! but it does go to show that everyone can make an observation that can be missed by another (anyone caught slagging off my piccies will get my boot up their a*se.......just kidding, )
  20. Morning wizzy fig!.....points 1 & 2 definitely....point 3 could be hard to sort out...as mentioned earlier, pants amateurs like myself, dont always know why we like a particular picture, we just do, hence a 'lovely pic' or 'nice pic'....I would like though the power to say that if I want to...I look at eg some of neil's work and kelly's and think that they're top notch, just dont ask me to explain why....also to paraphrase my earlier post, if someone posted, 'so AJ how did you take that photo, what setting, antriscopic filtering jargon jargon did you use?'.....my answer would be 'eh?......do you speak english?, ask me one on the FA cup!'...I wouldnt be much use
  21. Good idea that......What do the admin team think? as long as we dont lose sight of the fact, as Oon rightly said, this is a weather forum...not a pro photography forum (plenty of those elsewhere on the world wide web)....Stunning photos do get lost in the shuffle, so a seperate thread for them is a great idea.....lets face it, pics of your mothers new kitten, or latest graveyard selection do have a place here in the forum, and are amazing to look at, but need to have their own (pinned?) thread hehe, liked your last point, and was waiting for someone to say it....lol.......hang on, thats my next 500 posts b*ggered then.... ,
  22. Whoa....peace man, where has all the love gone in the photography thread! I do agree with Oon that at face value, a lot of pic comments are banal, but and there is always a but, I love photography, I've just gotten into it, but I know virtually nothing about it, and compared with many other posters, my photo's are rubbish, but if someone comments 'nice pic' and means it, then I feel that I must be doing something right....I've been guilty of using the comment 'nice pic', but this is because I look at a pic, and It has the 'wow' factor, I dont neccessarily know why I like it, I just know that I do, but I cant put it in words...I still comment though, because it will give the poster encouragement to continue posting photo's......If anyone asked me technical questions about my photo's, I wouldnt have a clue, but if people 'slammed' my efforts time after time, I would be stuck posting in 'banter' for the rest of my life! One mans rembrandt is another mans stick drawing... Just my two cents....I'll shut up now
  23. According to this report from a mozilla firefox plug-in, there is a rather unusual weather pattern over london as we speak!
