Cambus O'May is the location ??
Ah ok, thats quite a distance, thats near Ballater! Actually that image was taken from the suspension bridge at Cambus O May. I am going skiing on Saturday so will be driving by there so i will definately stop and snap some images to post! Thanks Mondy!

Here's another shot of the River Dee during a previous cold spell. I dunno when this was taken.
Can this shot be re-taken this year ???
I wish i knew this location so that i could re-take it...it truely does remind you of a continental arctic river
-
-
It froze between the bridges in 1995 but I don't think that it has since. The Tay has the highest flow of any UK river so takes a bit more to freeze.
Well i can honsetly say i have never seen a river in Scotland freeze quite like the Dee, the ice was cracking as the water flowed under it...to be honest it looked like it would hold the weight of a child it was that thick. It was frozen all the way to about 100metres of the sea...all we need is some heavy snowfall and a couple more freeze days like today and it will look spectacular! When loking at these pictures, bear in mind, if you havent seen the Dee in this location, its about 100metres wide

another quick question, but can we expect the north sea to drop away further in temp? if so what can we expect?
-
That's pretty bad like! North Sea influence has had a really bad affect on Aberdeen's weather since last Wednesday.
5° in a strong wind off the sea will be like a blow torch - dripping roofs mania!
Well lets hope the dripping roofs starts at about 2-3pm, then the wind dies down and the temps drop and give us monster icicles!!
-
where is the easterlie originating?
-
Snow has started falling in Peterhead and settling quickly!! Fingers crossed for an Aberdeen Event!!!
Just seen the latest BBC forecast and they have 5° for Aberdeen on Wednesday with a strong to gale easterly.
If this is true, we can expect a widespread thaw over many low lying areas. I don't think it will be that warm though.
I have honestly lost every bit of faith in the BBC, i have even started telling people to ignore the BBC and look at ITV instead...how bad is that??
-
My brother just told me that he watched the BBC forecast and they are predicting snow showers for NE Scotland tonight, i havent been able to verify this anywhere, am i missing something?
-
It 'could' be showery stuff that'll fizzle over land??
Any idea how far south the band is going to travel? Pressumably there is even colder air in behind it?
-
I find it hard to believe that the MetO and BBC have found it difficult this week, if we put things into perspective...like the fact that its their JOB, then we can only assume that there are either a lot of incompetant people or they have far too many variables in the mix to make it accurate. I honestly think the MetO and BBC should browse NW before any word of sever weather. NW has never let me down with any major weather event.

The uppers are not conduicive for snow as they will be around -2 to -4 in many places BUT as long as the surface conditions are favourable, it doesn't matter. One of the worst snowfalls for England and Wales in 63 occured with uppers around -3, as did the snow in Glasgow on the 12 March 2006. The FAX charts put the 528 dam line just south of the central belt by 12pm on Boxing Day, meaning the PPN would most likely be snow across central and northern areas. Remember, while low uppers are required for snowfall at the beginning of a cold spell, one the cold is in place it's hard to shift at the surface, so uppers can be relatively high and still have snow.
Why do the BBC forcasters not know/implement this theory then? Is ther any point in them even existing if they cant recognise easy weather forecasting like this?

Merry Christmas All!
Those showers coming in from the East (where'd they come from?) are showing as Freezing Rain on raintoday, Only -2.1C here and has been most of the night. One of the showers is just clipping us just now, and not that I've seen freezing rain but they look a bit more like like snizzle/sleet to me
WOW! finally Grampian has a warning for ICY Roads, 8.35am!
The roads were already already treacherous with ice at 7pm last night. Due to the slight thaw and rain/sleet we got yesterday. We were supposed to have friends around but they never came, at least they were out and about delivering Christmas presents, but cut their evening short.
I've got to go out now & not looking forward to that at all, should soon see though will report back!
Blizzard conditions here in banchory...where are these showers coming from? whats the potential for the rest of today and tomorrow?

-
well the rain is here...confused as to why as the temp is -1oC, still we got another 2" last night so that brings it to about 10-11". anyone have any idea why the showers are coming from the north and its the leaving edge that has the warmer air?
oh yeah and i believ cairngorm mountain got 40cm's last night at car park level according to a spokesman on the radio

The best time to see ice on the rivers is during a thaw, in 2006 the reiver dee in aberdeen looked completely frozen over with ice floating down from upper stage and blocking on the meanders in aberdeen. I have quite a few good pics of river ice in aberdeen, infact i cant recall a year when we havent had river ice here in aberdeen

I'm slightly concerned about this snow event hitting the NE, it has fallen as snow as it has hit Aberdeenshire, but raintoday.co.uk is showing rain on the north coast and snow further south? Does anyone think this is correct? Can anyone verify?

I took the Hogwarts express Pete, but the quote didn't hold!
.. actually is multiquote working at all?
nothing is quoting.
ack well here's the points uninteresting or otherwise.
- agree with Shugee, "it never/always snows here" apparently!
- Hogwarts just came alive
- did y'all see the SE Eng./Anglia thread having to be moderated last night
- Whatever happens,we've all got snow (apart from D McA and we know his turn is gonna come this year don't we!)
- Records about to be broken are probably being noticed by more than just us weather Geeks
- So was this politically devised to gloss over the recession?
- Isn't it fun Sledging, we need for it to be "nice" during the day but stormy through the night.. then frosty to protect the "runs"
- Where do I go for Xmas dinner if plans fall through
Oh I'm pretty sure I could think of more but I'm sure there's better things to do right now!
Like watch the snow falling in Aberdeenshire then feel sad for those who dont have any but then imeediately realise...oh well!!
-
yeh was worried about that, heres hoping it stays as snow cause on raintoday.com peterhead and along there its showing snow:)
My sister lives in Peterhead and its been snowing non stop for about an hour, so its not going to be rain

Well Portlethen, where i live has 9" od snow, as photographed earlier. I work in Banchory and they have about 3" max. Thats only 15 miles so it shows just how much of a costal event it was, i would have to guess that looking at the way the band off of Aberdeen is wrapping round, all areas within 10miles of the coast down to about the Forth will get quite a spell of snow. I believe it has started in Ellon, so it wont be long before it tracks slightly further SW and swings south. I'm slightly excited about it, however, we do have our fair share of snow here...wish it was Christmas Eve though!! Picture Postcard material
-
Hope the NE event pulls off, it could be pretty impressive...all images are pointing towards it making land fall, lets just hope it doesnt cut short
-
I have freezing-fog coming-in from the NW and 'something' approaching from the NE...It's difficult to tell?
SNOW!!!!!

Yeah i noticed that today too. Portlethen hasn't got above -3oC today and its forecast to be -2oC tonight..when believe it or not my car says -6oC already!
Oh yeah and weve had a nice dusting of snow already! The roads, pavements...infact anything that was icy is now white again!! Long may it continue
