Brilliant cheers Paul, let's hope it's fixed sooner rather than later! This is the time we really need it!!

Anyone have any idea what's up with the radar in the SE of England today? Its seems to have cut a large chunk it of it out.
-
Heating has been on since mid Oct, have only resorted to wearing gloves/scarf two mornings so far this Winter, however that will change soon no doubt!
-
I am trying to be realistic and understand that we may not get what is predicited but it's pretty hard when you look at some of these charts. BBC News 24 weather has just shown what looked like some snow showers down our way for Friday night.
As I'm aware we are expecting light snow showers overnight, giving no more than a dusting for much, which the radar is currently reflecting, so i'm confused as to what you are expecting?

Wouldnt mind any of these
Muahahaha, will do anything for something like these
That would be very nice indeed Ryan

Met Office don't issue warnings for 50mph wind gusts. I've read the criteria for wind is repeated gusts of at least 70mph.
I honestly believe they think it's going to be alot stronger than that, wait for their next update and see if they increase their speed predictions!

Trees are slowly beginning to turn those wondering warm and vibrant autumnal colours, I really do love Autumn!

Well I for one sure hope we get a better winter than last year.
By that I am obviously only talking about January and February.
Apart from the first few days of January and a couple at the end
plus the last day of February the 850 -5 isotherm was no where
to be seen over the majority of england and wales apart from a
brief flirtation with kent around the 20-22nd of the month.
The general public that I have come into contact with also agreed
that from the turn of the new year onwards there was no winter
unless you count a little sleet on the 7th of January.
The CET for the 2010/2011 winter is another example to me anyway
of how the CET can skew your idea of how certain seasons panned out.
I would however stick my neck out even this early in the autumn
to say that so long as we do not see the sun ramp up for a prolonged
period of time then a big winter ( severe perhaps) could very well be
on the cards with a very negative NAO and AO towards end of November
through December,January and even well into February.
You really sticking your neck out with that forecast! Hope it doesn't come back to bite you!

I think the best chance for anything convective was yesterday, any showers this week are very unlikely to show any thundery potential, fingers crossed we get a thundery outbreak late September/October before we move into winter!
-
I do love seeing those charts this time of the year, beginning to look forward to winter now

Thanks for the reply guys sorry if it was a dumb question
Don't be silly, far from a dumb question, that's the point of being on a forum so you can ask if you aren't sure
so is it going to be windy enough down here in the south west .. i need to get my washing out pmsl
The gusts may be strong so I wouldn't advise on it!
-
My averages were:
December: 1.4c
January: 5.4c
February: 7.3c
So pretty much in tune with SP1986, December being way below average however February brought the season average right up, hense why people are saying it was a mild winter, however if you look back in detail it really wasn't!

Can i ask a question please ,i am a complete novice when it comes to the weather so if this questions seems stupid i apologise now lol.By any chance could this storm still change track? or is it set in stone now as to where she will hit ?
Never say never, as we all know the weather can suprise us, but it's about 95% certain now that this is going to track toward the UK
-
January definately wasn't mild! I think just because it doesn't snow much people don't remember it as a cold month, but in realisitic terms it was freezing most mornings!
-
93mph - Stornoway
-
Then why have they put Durham under an amber alert? There must be a reason and it cannot be rain.
A 50mph gust can be quite damaging! Especially at the trees are still in full leaf!
-
It's very interesting that the NMM shows the system arriving later and further south that the other models, it would tie in well with the Met Office extending the warning southward, perhaps the NMM is on to something here?
-
Not related to Katia but today I have already recorded a sustained wind speed of 25 mph, which is actually what the forecast speed for Monday was.
I've recorded 31mph here, I wouldn't pay much attention to the model based forecast speeds, most seem to be underplaying just how powerful this storm really is, I think the Met Office are on the right tracks with their forecast warnings.
i thought we got 60 mph gusts! it was pretty windy that day anyway :s
Perhaps along the extreme south coasts but definately no further inland!
-
Seeing this just makes me want the new series of Top Gear on!
-
Am i right in saying that last weekends winds on the south coast were worse than we are going to get tomorrow?
What winds? I think the highest I recorded here in Kent was a 35mph gust!
-
Well I'm too old and ratty to care if I'm doomed really - but has the current stopped or changed or moved or anything at all?
I think there has been suggestions that the gulf stream has infact slowed, but whether there's any scientific proof behind it to verify this, I don't know.
-
That bodes well with the latest NHC advisory which sees the storm beginning to take a NE path as it moves up to the east of the USA, something to watch out for!

I don't see the reasoning behind extending the warning to the North Midlands, unless it's for rain?
Certainly the orange in Southern Scotland and not Northern Scotland, it probably down to the effect it will have on a larger population, rather than a more southerly track.
Certainly though I think in reality a warning is only really warranted north of Cumbria. But then again who am I to talk, I am afterall not the professional forecaster
Seeing as the warning is for wind, I doubt it's for rain somehow....
I can see exactly why the Met Office have extended the warning, the models are showing potential for gusts up 70mph or even 80mph in some exposed spots in these parts, well within weather warning criteria I believe.

Brilliant Paul cheers for that! Looks like it'll be back for the big event on Monday!
