  1. A distinctive rarity over the last couple of years - a negative temperature anomaly. This accompanied by high rainfall (207%) and below average sunshine makes it the worst July since 1988 here. In spite of this, EvapoTranspiration still exceeded rainfall and my part of Kent totally missed out on any flooding, being on the edge of downpours rather than right underneath them. Subjectively however, somehow it didn't really seem that bad... 1988 - for comparison Avg Daily Min: 12.5 ºC Avg Daily Max: 19.8 ºC Wet Days: 19 Total Rainfall: 77.6mm Est. 2. A "month of two halves" here with a fine and warm start up to the 19th, albeit lacking notable hot days and prolonged sunny periods. The monthly temperatures were slightly above average despite an unsettled, cool and wet last third to June, dominated - as we are all too well aware - by slow moving low pressure systems with a more southerly track than usual. Rainfall ended as 171% of average and the sunshine total was roughly 70% of normal. A rather bland month of weather and the worst since 1997 and 1998 for enthusiasts of warm, dry sunny weather - although not as bad as the worst June in my records (1991). 3. A normal May mixture of good and bad with temperatures generally around average and unexceptional. The main feature of the month was very cool and wet late spring Bank Holiday weekend conditions on 27th/28th, which raised rainfall levels rather above average for the month. The 28th with a daytime max of 7.7 ºC was the coldest day for any date in May since recording began at this site (just beating May 17th, 1996 in the awfulness stakes). Sunshine total was only around 75% of normal, with just 3 or 4 days bringing extended sunshine of 10 hrs or more. 4. By some distance the warmest April I have recorded since logging began in 1984. The month was also the driest April in the same time span, only a couple of thundery showers in the early hours of the 26th prevented it from being a completely rain free calendar month. Sunshine was also well above average, around 150% with the official station at East Malling Research - just a few miles away - recording 277.6 hours. 5. MARCH 2007 - Rather mild, very sunny. A rather mild month but only the mildest March here since 2003. Daily high temperatures were rather above normal but, unusually, the second half of the month was cooler than the first with two short cool spells. The preponderance of clear night skies led to minimum temperatures around average. The monthly mean was only 0.2C higher than for January 2007. Rainfall total was almost exactly average with no particularly wet days. Snowfall was observed during wintry showers on the 19th but did not settle. Sunshine total was considerably above average (probably 150%), though maybe less than 2003 and certainly less than 1995 (going by LWC records). Due to the high sunshine total EvapoTranspiration exceeded the rainfall total. 6. A mild month but only the mildest February since 2002, with consistently warm days and nights and no notable temperature peaks or frosts. One brief cold snap brought a short lived snowfall. Rainfall total was 140% of average despite two dry spells, with no particularly wet days. Sunshine total was probably just a little below average. Monthly Mean: 6.5 ºC Average max: 9.4 ºC ( 1.7C ABOVE average ) Average min: 4.1 ºC ( 1.7C ABOVE average ) Highest max: 12.6 ºC ( 17th ) Lowest max: 4.2 ºC ( 8th ) Lowest min: -5.6 ºC ( 7th ) Highest min: 8.3 ºC ( 20th ) No.of Days with air frost: 6 days Low Wind Chill: -5.6 ºC ( 7th ) Low THW Heat Index: -5.7 ºC ( 7th ) High THW Heat Index: 11.9 ºC ( 1st ) High THSW Sun Index: 21.1 ºC ( 21st ) Lowest RH%: 41 % ( 7th ) Lowest Dewpoint: -8.1 ºC ( 7th ) Highest Dewpoint: 9.6 ºC ( 27th ) Rain total: 69.5 mm ( 140% of Average ) Wettest day: 8.9 mm ( 14th ) Rain Days ( measurable ): 16 days Rain Days ( >= 1.0mm ): 14 days High Rain Rate: 22.6 mm/hr ( 28th ) Days with snowfall 1 days ( Max ground cover c. 45mm for 8 hours ) EvapoTranspiration Total: 18.9 mm Wind Speed Average: 1.8 mph Wind Speed high gust: 29 mph ( 28th ) Wind Dominant Direction: SSW ( 40% ) followed by SE, ESE, N & W Mean Barometer: 1007.2 hPa Low Barometer: 979.5 hPa ( 12th ) High Barometer: 1039.8 hPa ( 3rd ) High Solar Radiation: 684 w/m2 ( 26th ) Sunshine Hours: 59.4 Hours ** Sunniest Day: 6.2 Hours ( 15th ) calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 8+ hrs actual daily total ** calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 68 - 75 hrs actual monthly total ( below average) * average at this site 1984 - 2006 http://www.tonbridge-weather.org.uk/2007/feb2007.htm
  7. A very mild month - the mildest January at this site since recording began in 1984 (previous record 1990) - with some very windy days. The windiest month and the highest gust speed since the anemometer was installed in Aug 2004 (though sheltered exposure means readings are unimpressive). In spite of a wet start the rainfall total finished below average. The one brief cold snap was responsible for the 4 air frosts and a few hours of snow cover on the morning of the 24th. Sunshine total was probably a little below average due to a long dull spell from 5th to 13th. Monthly Mean: 7.4 ºC Average max: 9.5 ºC (2.4C ABOVE average) Average min: 5.4 ºC (2.7C ABOVE average) Highest max: 13.5 ºC ( 18th ) Lowest max: 1.6 ºC ( 25th ) Lowest min: -2.0 ºC ( 26th ) Highest min: 11.6 ºC ( 9th ) No.of Days with air frost: 4 days Low Wind Chill: -6.9 ºC ( 23rd ) Low THW Heat Index: -2.3 ºC ( 23rd ) High THW Heat Index: 12.3 ºC ( 19th ) High THSW Sun Index: 16.1 ºC ( 31st ) Lowest RH%: 53 % ( 21st ) Lowest Dewpoint: -5.1 ºC ( 24th ) Highest Dewpoint: 10.1 ºC ( 8th ) Rain total: 59.9 mm ( 77% of Average) Wettest day: 9.4 mm ( 17th ) Rain Days ( measurable ): 20 Rain Days ( >= 1.0mm ): 13 High Rain Rate: 28.4 mm/hr ( 17th ) Days with snowfall 3 days ( Max ground cover c. 12mm for 6 hours ) EvapoTranspiration Total: 19.7 mm Wind Speed Average: 3.9 mph Wind Speed high gust: 40 mph ( 18th ) Site record since anemometer installed in Aug 2004 Wind Dominant Direction: SSW (67%) followed by W, NNW, WSW Mean Barometer: 1016.3 hPa Low Barometer: 987.9 hPa ( 18th ) High Barometer: 1033.5 hPa ( 27th ) High Solar Radiation 436 w/m2 ( 29th ) Sunshine Hours 27.4 Hours ** Sunniest Day: 3.5 Hours calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 6+ hrs actual daily total ** calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 55 hrs actual monthly total ( below average) * average at this site 1984 - 2006 Full daily details & stats here: http://www.tonbridge-weather.org.uk/2007/jan2007.htm
  8. Overall a warm year despite a cool first quarter, possibly the warmest year in my site records though 2003 runs it very close (data collection started in 1984, but I don't have a way to calculate true temperature mean prior to 2004). Monthly rain totals were mostly below average but it was a rather wet autumn although the yearly rainfall was still below average. It is the 4th successive year with below average rainfall, and for the 3rd year running no daily total exceeded 20mm. Sunshine was probably near average. Most notable for 2006 were the exceptionally warm July and September separated by a rather cool wet and dull August, with June also very warm though less so than 2003. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yearly Mean Temp: 11.3 ºC Average max: 15.3 ºC ..... 9. The first half of the month was dominated by wind and rain, with settled weather at a premium. The 9th was the best sunny day of the month. As HP took over it became much brighter and frosty from the 16th to 22nd. From the 23rd anticyclonic gloom took over and there was little sunshine for the remainder of the month. Very stormy and unsettled end to the month...as we all know In summary the month was milder and wetter than average and certainly with below average sunshine thanks to the long sunless period around Xmas. 12. Here are a couple of wx notes, the first one local to me. "The wind blew with such violence that that it destroyed over 1,100 houses in Kent alone. Branchely Church near Tunbridge lost its steeple. Scarely a house was undamaged in Tonbridge and Penhurst Park lost 500 trees. The wind blew so hard that it brought salt in from the Channel and cattle refused to eat the brine-crusted grass at Cranbrook, 17 miles inland." (Source: Bob Ogley) [The 'Great Storm' of 1703 which commenced on Friday 26th November (old-style) was probably the worst ever experienced in England.....Possibly a rejuvenated Atlantic hurricane, this storm produced estimated winds reaching 120mph/104 knots] Full text here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather...e/1700_1749.htm
  13. A stark contrast to the preceding two months; an autumnal feel prevailing on most days from the 10th onwards. Probably quite a contrast between east and west of England this month, due to prevalence of N'ly winds with a Polar Maritime airflow and off the North Sea which brought some very low maxes in mid month here... - COOL. COOLEST August since 1993 - DULL. SUNSHINE estimated at no more than approx 70% of average. 14. An exceptional month, the hottest calendar month at my site since start of recording in 1984 (and almost certainly warmer than 1983 going by LWC data), a new record maximum for the month, a new low relative humidity (since AWS acquired in Jul 2004), and the sunniest since ownership of a solar sensor in Feb 2005. Rainfall too was once again significantly below average, 3 thunderstorms were heard (possibly 1 or 2 while I was away too) but little rain associated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Highest max: 36.1 ºC on 19th (new July record and 2nd highest recorded here) Lowest max: 20.9 ºC on 9th Lowest min: 11.7 ºC on 14th Highest min: 18.2 ºC on 26th ------------------------------------------------------------ Average max: 27.2 ºC (4.7C ABOVE average*) Average min: 15.3 ºC (2.2C ABOVE average*) Monthly mean: 20.8 ºC Days with Max => 25 ºC: 18 Days with Max => 30 ºC: 10 High THW Heat Index: 35.2 ºC (19th) High THSW Index: 41.4 ºC (19th) ------------------------------------------------------------ Rain: 17.8 mm (42% of average*) Wettest day: 6.6 mm (22nd) Rain Days (measurable ): 9 (7 with =>1.0mm) High Rain Rate: 29.0 mm/hr (22nd) Thunder: 3 + maybe 2 while away ------------------------------------------------------------ Wind Speed: high gust 24 mph, 9th Wind Direction: SSW Dominant then SE then ESE then NNW ------------------------------------------------------------ High Barometer: 1031.4 hPa (13th) Low Barometer: 1006.8 hPa (31st) Mean Barometer: 1018.2 hPa ------------------------------------------------------------ Lowest RH%: 18% (19th) Lowest DP: 6.5 ºC (17th) Highest DP: 18.7 ºC (22nd) ------------------------------------------------------------ Sunshine: 191.7 hours calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 290 - 300 hrs actual monthly total ( well above average) Sunniest Day: 17th & 18th with 8.8 hrs recorded, probably c. 15 hrs actual. * average at this site 1984 - 2005 Full monthly stats here: http://www.tonbridge-weather.org.uk/2006/july2006.htm
  15. Max of 36.1 ºC here today, new July record & the 2nd highest temp I have recorded since 1984. And - since getting Davis VP1 in 2004 - also lowest ever relative humidity of 18% and highest ever heat index. Currently 7/8 cloudy and 28.4 ºC, 39% RH (my own weather website is down as I write this )
  16. Dry, warm, sunny. The 4th consecutive June to be warmer than average here. Although by no means consistently warm, and despite that some low minimums actually made the overall mean identical with 2005, this was subjectively the second 'best' June after 2003 since I started recording in 1984. It was significantly drier than average here once more although only the 7th driest since 1984. Sunshine was approx 10% higher than last year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Highest max: 30.5 ºC on 12th Lowest max: 14.1 ºC on 26th Lowest min: 3.3 ºC on 1st Highest min: 17.2 ºC on 13th ------------------------------------------------------------ Average max: 22.8 ºC (2.5C ABOVE average*) Average min: 11.1 ºC (0.1C ABOVE average*) Monthly mean: 16.6 ºC Days with Max => 25 ºC: 11 High THW Heat Index: 30.1 ºC (12th) High THSW Index: 36.3 ºC (12th) ------------------------------------------------------------ Rain: 18.8 mm (43% of average*) Wettest day: 8.1 mm (13th) Rain Days (measurable ): 5 (3 with =>1.0mm) High Rain Rate: 80.3 mm/hr (13th) Thunder: Can't remember TBH ------------------------------------------------------------ Wind Speed: high gust 25 mph, 20th Wind Direction: SSW Dominant then ESE then SE then NNW ------------------------------------------------------------ High Barometer: 1030.8 hPa (2nd) Low Barometer: 1008.2 hPa (21st) Mean Barometer: 1020.0 hPa ------------------------------------------------------------ Lowest RH%: 22% (3rd) Lowest DP: -0.2 ºC (3rd) Highest DP: 20.6 ºC (13th) ------------------------------------------------------------ Sunshine: 163.3 hours calculated with limited sensor exposure, estimate 220 - 230 hrs actual monthly total ( a little above average) Sunniest Day: 3rd and 30th with 9.0 hrs recorded, probably >13 hrs actual. * average at this site 1984 - 2005 Full monthly stats here: http://www.tonbridge-weather.org.uk/2006/june2006.htm
