2005 was a very dry year here - just 60% of my yearly average precipitation from 1984 to 2005. This is by a huge margin the lowest annual rainfall I have recorded here since I started in 1984 (old record 551mm in 2003) and quite possibly the driest year in the locality since 1921. The most notable feature was that the number of rainy days was close to average, therefore the deficit is due to the lack of heavy and prolonged rainfall and thunderstorms. Even the wettest day of the year saw only 17mm fall whereas at least one day with well in excess of 25mm can be expected in a normal year. In all other respects a rather average year weatherwise being 'consistent' with no extremes of heat or cold. The year as a whole was the coolest since 2001, but the summer was the 5th warmest I have recorded since 1984.
