  1. Sun trying to break through here. Temperature 12.7C currently but I expect this to rise quickly with the sun as with the last couple of days.

On a slightly different subject I note that May up here was at 10.2C only 0.2 above the long term average. This could be interpreted as a cold Month these days.

  3. The nights ain't unbearable if you take a few simple steps like people do in hotter countries. Shut windows and curtains during the day, open them after sunset; remove big fluffy rugs, etc. Sleep in the nude and keep a sheet handy for when you chill later in the night.

I rarely have problems sleeping in hot weather now by doing these things. Going to bed later helps too - if you go to bed really early (like 10pm) you're asking for trouble as nothings cooled down yet! A lot less sleep is needed in the summer anyway.

That would be fine if it wasn't for the noise and light pollution so prevelant nowadays.

I had to work in London for three weeks during Aug 2003 and found it a nightmare trying to sleep because of the above. I had no problem on holiday in the Canaries with even hotter nights the following two weeks.

  4. Sometimes late wet snow falls like in the last few days can actually hasten the melting of the remaining snowpack when the new snow melts having softened the previous sugary snow which had resulted from a freeze / thaw cycle.

Tonight is forecast to be well below freezing in the mountains so this may help keep the snow a little longer.

  5. Though the CET area is looking to be above average although wet, I think the North so far in May must be a bit below. We have had several cloudy days with cold North Easterly winds and also some cool nights. Max temps have been around 10 degrees in general.

We could have done with being on the North side ofd the low pressure systems several months ago.

  6. In the long-term it is normal to get occasional snow showers in May, in fact Ive even seen snow here in early June. However, in terms of say the last 10 years or so then no its not normal. Im just beginning to wonder if its possible that while the rest of the UK warms, Shetland, because it is so far north is perhaps coming under a more Scandinavian influence. Our winds recently have been predominately from the N/NE rather than the usual SW/W. This is a trend I have noticed over the last few years and has also been noticed by Dave Wheeler at the Fair Isle Met Office.

Though in Spring Shetland and the far North have at times been under the influence of much colder conditions than the rest of the UK I think that last Winter was milder and much more snow free than usual, pretty much the same as the rest of us.

  7. I like being able to play 18 holes of golf with the course being quiet as most people don't think of teeing off after 8Pm. When I lived up North we used to regularly finish after 11pm.

Re Cookies post above Lewis is a great place for the light nights. Not quite as light as Shetland but never truly dark in June.

That should have said 8 pm. Don't know how I managed to get the smiley in there.

  9. As for the snow patches, I reckon that there's more chance of a few of them surviving this year. Although this winter was milder than 2005/06, the frequent Atlantic gales will have resulted in deep snowfalls on the highest peaks- essentially the greater precipitation will have offset the higher temperatures, particularly as it came mostly from the west or south-west. Snow patches typically last longer when snows come in from the Atlantic, e.g. the years of 1996 and 2001 had low snow patch survival despite following on from long cold snowy winters. By contrast, the year 2000, following on from a mild westerly-dominated winter, saw 41 patches survive; the westerlies brought much snow to high ground.

However, the mildness of the season should ensure that the patch survival will be below the long-term average. The only years in which all patches melted were 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003 and 2006 (source: Weather) and to have two consecutive years in which all patches melted would be remarkable.

Yes, both 1996 and 2001 had relatively late significant snowfalls but they came in on North Easterlies and stacked up on South-West facing slopes. The rate of melt was remarkable, even on higher ground and by late April most South facing slopes were bare. Patches on lower hills lasted relatively late in Spring in places like the Ochills and even West Lomond in Fife these years.

  10. My favourite Months from memory [with a little help from the my diary].

January: 1984. Deep and prolonged snow. My fav 5 January's came in the 10 years from 1978 to 1987

Feb: 1979. January's snow still on the ground with more to come.

March: 1975 Wintry. Just beat 1979.

    April: 1981 Sunshine then snow.

    May: 2001. Sunny

June: 1975. Once in a lifetime snow then sunny and warm.

July: 2006. Sunny and not too hot and humid at night.[at least up here].

Aug: 1981. Had to get one big thunderstorm in. Also lots of sunshine.

    Sept: Enjoyed last years.

Oct: 1987 Most difficult to pick. Went for 87 because of variety. Didn't really get the big storm up here.

Nov: 1973. Sunny with snow later.

    Dec: Got to be 1981.

Looking at that my fav weather must be snow but if I can't get it give me sunshine. :)

  11. With all this warm weather coming up from the south over the next few days, just thinking how long will it take this years snow patchs to disappear, if at all!!!

Its the wet weather that affects snow patch survival and not the heat as it is reflected back.

A cool westerly airflow helps maintain the snow especailly in the gullies and corries and away from any sun.

How long will they last this year....june? July? August maybe?

If the snow that is shown on winterhighland is anything to go by theres alot of melting to be done.

    Winterhighland here

Even with this poor Winter the patches will not be gone by June or even July. I have never known a year when at least a few didn't make it through to August. Remember until recently it was a rare year that did not see patches lasting all year in places like Braeriach in the Cairngorms.

  12. As snow is my favourite Winter weather and we have only had a few dustings here I had to give a mark of 1.

I have spent many Winters here over the years and this is without doubt the poorest for snow by some way although last year would also have been poor if March had been excluded.

There was barely any snow cover visible below 1000m at the weekend around the Loch Lomond area (i know there will be some in corries etc) Hopefuly not too much of the snow that falls tommorrow morning will be lost when it turns to rain in the afternoon....

Then it doesn't look bad and hopeufly be able to get into the mountains at the weekend, weather and knee permitting

A lot of it has gone I'm afraid and taken some of the older snow with it in places. I was up in Highland Perthshire today and found bare slopes with only patches and the remnants of older snow to over 2000 Feet. In lower areas the only evidence of yesterdays snow are some piles at the edges of car parks and sides of the road. Raining today particularly further West with a strong wind but temps dropping and bright ints appearing in the afternoon.
