  1. I remember the 2001 fiasco, indeed I was quick to dismiss it on the BBC boards at the time. It was mighty close though, -15hpa was not all that far from our shores until the northerly jet kicked in to give Britain a(nother) mild spell.

2001 was not a write off everywhere. There were several decent snowfalls in Scotland and at least one in the North of England in February and early March. :D

  2. Windy and wet here. Temps 7.5, humidity 52% and pressure of 962mBs.

Sepa have issues a severe flood warning for the Upper Tay area [the highest level indicating dangerous imminent floods. Also many flood watches and warnings throughout the area.

Along with the forecast high winds an interesting if dangerous night ahead in many areas.

  3. Hoping for at least some snow in January for a change plus a cold festive season. Also look East.

  4. Can I ask where within each location the points are gained? Is it from an official site or from members own posts. In Dundee as elsewhere the location can make a huge difference. Where I lived in the North West of the City often has snow when the City Centre and South East by the river has none. This happened on several occasions last Winter / Spring. I am also in a frost hollow. Official reports from Dundee come from the Airport [i think] which lies by the river and is relatively snowless.

The previous post about Dundee's weather is also correct as in a Northerly Dundee suffers from dryness, not a lack of cold.

  5. Given your description of the December I'm guessing you mean 1995/96, with its remarkable Shetland blizzard around Christmas Day. Summer 1995 was exceptionally sunny and hot, and it would seem that no region of the UK missed out that summer. October and November were certainly positive NAO months, but Winter 1995/96 was a strongly negative NAO winter.

If it's 1994/95 you're talking about, that winter was a positive NAO winter, which was mild and wet in the south, but contained potent northerlies and north-westerlies for northern areas particularly as we headed into early spring. I recall seeing that Fair Isle was snowy in both of those winters according to Dave Wheeler.

It would be December 1995. A brilliant Christmas morning blizzard as far South as parts of the Scottish Central belt.

  6. Feb. 2005 for me after that. Tell me as well did that or October 30, 2000(!) deliver much for your area?

Incidentally TWS makes a good point about the Scandinavian High for most of England - but this doesn't consider what my area, North Yorkshire, and Kent went through in February-March 2005, which was indeed in close proximity of last winter, and also what parts of the South-East and East reportedly (although I know it to be true - that's just a figure of speech) had in late December 2005.

Sorry. Can't remember Oct 3, 2000 and have filed away weather diary from 2000 in the loft. Late Feb until mid March this year was better here than 2005 though we did get some snowfalls then also. On the few occasions the Scandinavian high has ridged towards us in recent Winters it has tended to come to close to us to bring anything but cold and light wintry / snow showers.

  7. 'While both of the winters you have recited were weakly positive in terms of the NAO, the 1991 example was a cold winter, the Met Office are predicting a mild winte, therefore 2001 is the most likely anologue'

2001 was actually the last good Winter we had for snow up here. A repeat of some of the North Easterlies that occurred in Feb and early March 2001 would be most welcome.

  8. My memories of Christmas 1995.

Christmas Eve. Took my new Fiancee to visit my parents in Highland Perthshire for the first time. Arrived pm to clear skies, a temp of -2 and a covering of powdery snow from showers on the 23rd.

In evening visited pub in Aberfeldy. Came out at 1030 to find light snow falling and the powder blowing in the strengthening wind.

Woke up AM Christmas day to find a full blown blizzard and could hardly see across the road.

At 1100 the snow stopped, the wind dropped and the sun came out. The temperature also dropped like a stone to herald several days of sub zero temperatures. Maxima of -5 to -10. Minima of -14 to -19. Not quite as cold as 1982 but the second coldest that my parents had recorded in the area.

At the end of the week the pipes in the attic had frozen and burst like countless others despite having the Central heating on constantly.

Incidentally despite throwing my Fiancee in a snowdrift before Christmas lunch she still married me anyway :D
