  1. Hi SF. I was brought up in Highland Region and then the Central Highlands [both snowy areas by UK standards] and still consider them to be my home territory. Therefor I will only make a half hearted defence of Dundee's snow record. I have now spent 20 Winters in Dundee and none have been snowless or until this one nearly snowless. I cannot say the same for Winters I have spent in London [2 snowless], Hull, Edinburgh and even ones in Aberdeen and Peterhead from 88 to 90. It did snow in Peterhead as far South as the outskirts of Aberdeen in May however I think in 1990. Though the narrow strip of Dundee Eastwards from the city centre to Broughty Ferry may have a comparible climate to St Andrews Bay most of Dundee to the North and West differs quite substantially. My fantastic [in case the wife comes in and reads this]Mother-In-Law retired to N.E. Fife some years ago and has on average less than half the snow falling days that I record and an even smaller percentage of days with lying snow. Anyway we can agree to differ and can I thank you for setting up the competition that I have enjoyed participating in despite the poor returns from my East coast mid Winter snow forecasts.
  2. Look at the Met Office average snow lying days map 1971-2000. I think that you will find that Dundee does rather better than most UK low ground cities with the exception of Aberdeen. Apart from this year [which has been a disaster max depth 1cm approx]I think that this is even more pronounced since 2000.
  3. Light snow showers here just now as the wind turns a bit more into the East. Saturday looking our best bet for more substantial snow.
  4. Yes it is beginning to look good for favoured 'breakdown'areas in Scotland on Thursday / Friday. Perhaps Perhshire, West Fife, Stirling and inland in the Central belt. May just be too mild near the coast and further South may turn to rain more quickly.
  5. Clear here and temperature has risen by 1.5 degrees since earlier this evening. There is a slight breeze now so this may be the reason. Now 0.8C
  6. Currently 3.5c here with sunny ints after another very stormy night with heavy driving rain.
  7. Wet snow falling here just now. Large wet flakes but not lying. Temp is 2.0C. Funny the last shower was sleety rain but temp was 1.6C
  8. Last year was definately of the in with a lion version though the cold and snow peaked here in the middle of the Month with the 12th having our deepest snowfall of the Winter.[or should that be Spring?] As far as Winter months go I have to go with December as though it is not always cold and snowy it is nearly always dark and gloomy, the odd bright frosty day aside.
  9. Before Global Warming took over March was a transitional winter/spring month in my opinion. There was an old saying connected to March's cold first half and March's warm second half. "In like a lion. Out like a lamb".
  10. I drove across a snow covered road [for a couple of miles] this morning. It was the A826 Aberfeldy to Crieff road in Perthshire. A covering of 1-2 cms of frozen snow [but beginning to melt] covered the high point above 1000 feet approximately. Am I getting exited about this in January??
  11. Good thunderstorm in the Fife / Dundee areas this afternoon about 3pm. Numerous claps of thunder and some close lightening strikes. Now another heavy downpour but no more thunder.
  12. We are North of any action here so clearish skies, light winds and a temperature of 3.0C at present. Tomorrow may be a little different!
  13. 1.5 and damp here. Another air frost this morning with -1.1C. Didn't get above 2.0 today though temps may well rise later.
  14. 1.7C here. Dull and raw. No air frost last night. Min was 0.2C.
  15. -1.2C here in the fog. Did not get above freezing today. I hope that the sun comes out tomorrow.
  16. -1.1 here with fog persisting. Possible ice day ahead. Only a few miles in town the frost has lifted.
  17. Minimum last night -2.4 Maximum today 1.0 Currently clear at -0.6 All is white.
  18. The report on the Inverness football game against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier mentioned sleet and snow falling in the first half.
  19. Temperature here now 0.3 and falling. However there is a very defined ring round the moon indicating that the rain is not too far away, I expect the temps to start rising soon. Signs of frost remained all day today in shaded areas,
  20. 2001 was not a write off everywhere. There were several decent snowfalls in Scotland and at least one in the North of England in February and early March.
  21. Windy and wet here. Temps 7.5, humidity 52% and pressure of 962mBs. Sepa have issues a severe flood warning for the Upper Tay area [the highest level indicating dangerous imminent floods. Also many flood watches and warnings throughout the area. Along with the forecast high winds an interesting if dangerous night ahead in many areas.
  22. 6.0 for me. No sign of any cold nights in the near future and any cold[er] interludes will be short lived. Any cold snap later in the Month [ i think] will have to much to make up to bring the CET down to average.
  23. Hoping for at least some snow in January for a change plus a cold festive season. Also look East. 10/12/06 Aberdeen 3 18/12/06 Newcastle 2 31/12/06 London 1 08/01/07 Kings Lynn 2 10/01/07 Peterborough 2 30/01/07 Norwich 3 14/02/07 Dundee 2 26/02/07 Middlesborough 3 04/03/07 Ipswich 2
  24. Can I ask where within each location the points are gained? Is it from an official site or from members own posts. In Dundee as elsewhere the location can make a huge difference. Where I lived in the North West of the City often has snow when the City Centre and South East by the river has none. This happened on several occasions last Winter / Spring. I am also in a frost hollow. Official reports from Dundee come from the Airport [i think] which lies by the river and is relatively snowless. The previous post about Dundee's weather is also correct as in a Northerly Dundee suffers from dryness, not a lack of cold.
  25. It would be December 1995. A brilliant Christmas morning blizzard as far South as parts of the Scottish Central belt.
