  1. Yeah, but we do have to learn lessons from this event, though. I still feel enormously priveleged on the occasions when I get to fly anywhere, but there are people who use them like buses. There are people who commute to work in England from Northern France, for example, and how come it is more economic for an international company to fly its sales staff around the world rather than employ locals? After all, there is no hint of any green solutions imminent for planes and the US military last week warned about oil shortages as soon as 2015: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/apr/11/peak-oil-production-supply Time to get in the queue for an allotment....
  2. "It won’t be a volcano that ends man’s existence on this planet. It’ll be the no-win no-fee lawyers. They are the ones who brought Europe to a halt last week. They are the ones who made a simple trip from Berlin to London into a five-country, all-day hammer blow on your licence fee. They are the ones who must be stopped." Jeremy Clarkson http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/jeremy_clarkson/article7100772.ece
  3. Too true - the implications have sure taken a long time to sink in!
  4. OOer - COBRA is to be convened! Looks like the electioneering will have to take a back seat...!
  5. The one visible now near Salisbury doesn't have a registration number and seems very low so I think that must be a private small plane - the one that was just over Cardiff I thought was marked as BA and three numbers?
  6. Hey all. Just caught up with this thread as I live under the flightpath to Southampton (next-door neighbour is quite senior at NATS Swanwick!) and I am feeling a tad concerned about the commercial pressure being brought to bear (have to admit a vested interest as I have loved the peace and quiet and have no flights booked!). I was watching this flight, too, but it has vanished - other planes it says quite clearly if they are in a descent or a climb so I'm puzzled too. Any witnesses on the ground? K
  7. Yeah, there were some amazing clouds - huge cumulo-nimbus, white and dark grey, some of them had tattered, feathery edges and I think I saw some anvils amongst them, too. BTW, I cam home shortly after this snow shower and the temp (according to the car, which seems pretty accurate) was 6.5 degrees! I guess that might have been the effect of the sun coming out after the big cloud had passed over. However I arrived back home in Southampton just after it had snowed here and the temp was 5.0. Prob shouldn't have hoped it would settle, then!
  8. Glorious sunshine here at work in Romsey - window open, radiator off. A very dark cloud is passing over and it's just started snowing! Big fat flakes, but only lasted a few minutes
  9. Light drizzle here in Salisbury, with the odd snowflake mixed in!
  10. Hubby reports s shower of fine snow grains and hail in central Southampton at 3:15 this afternoon - the snow risk charts were spot on and have been predicting that for at least 4 days! Clear skies here, now, though - perfect for watching the brightest full moon of the year and the proximity of Mars, but no good for wintry ppn...
  11. Anyone around??? I was feeling pessimistic about the chances of snow for us from this front, but my friend reports it is snowing in Telford. Seems to be further south sooner than expected... Kate
  12. Rain and 4 degrees in Soton when I set out at 10am. Temp fell to 1.5 in the space of about 5 miles north of Winchester and the rain turned to beautiful snow! Continued to snow moderately in North Hants till about noon, lying everywhere, even on the roads and pavements, but then it turned to drizzle and all the white stuff started to wash away. Can't imagine there was any at home during my absence. Fingers crossed for next week! Best stock on some coal for the stove. Kate
  13. The radars show the wind has veered back E/SEly so doesn't that mean we're heading back to a Siberian pattern, rather than Atlantic lows???
  14. Snowing again in Southampton. The stuff that fell until about 8am this morning (very small grains = 2cm maybe) was already melting of the trees in big gobbets but now there are lovely, fat flakes coming down!!!
  15. Nice one, slb. You got loads more than we did here. Mind you I went to Manor Farm Country Park on Sunday, which is just on the eastern edge of Soton, a couple of miles from here and it looked like that - ankle-deep and still powdery after 4/5 days. Gorgeous stuff. I guess everybody on this thread would like this every winter?!
  16. Wa-hey! Here we go! The ppn is now more snow than rain and we have a (very wet) dusting. Please don't let it stop because I want to stay home again tomorrow!
  17. 1-2. Can't believe it. Well done! But you realise we're not going to get *any* snow at all, now, don't you???!!! That's it for the wwwhhooolllle rest of the winter. Bah humbug
  18. Same here LOL! Sell my granny for league points! Hope you get both tonight.
  19. S'alright - it's tuff being a south coast footy fan! So which would you rather have - a win in the Cup or 6 inches of powder?????
  20. Blimey, you extend the hand of friendship... Just wait till next season, fella!
  21. Yeah, that last update on raintoday really shows it well - and I thought it was going to fizzle out! If we could just have a 2 deg drop in the temp we could be in a for a good dump...
  22. Good luck to all you skates out there. It's a tough ask, though!
  23. Those bands on raintoday are bunching up again into a proper front.
  24. Sleet in Southampton. It's much warmer than it was, though. Ice underfoot on the way out with the dog was slush on the way back half an hour later I think we should all be good boys and girls and go to sleep and hope there is a surprise for us in the morning!
