  1. Yeh, I've been watching that front edge breaking up and wondering the same thing
  2. Only from my car (it seems to be pretty accurate): 3.5 about 10 mins ago. Had been about 2 this afternoon, with significant wind chill but even that seems to have gone now.
  3. SW thread are reporting the front now moving into Dorset, so the band has travelled a lot faster than predicted. IMHO, this increases the chance of early evening rain for us, rather than late-night snow, judging by the way the ice is melting this afternoon. The red areas on the radar also seem to be petering out as it moves in. Trying to stay optimisitic that the blizzard currently blowing on Dartmoor will keep going until it stalls over Bitterne Park for the night!
  4. Maybe she's a volunteer at a homeless shelter or summat.
  5. Temperature must hace dropped suddenly - thought someone had opened a door. The dog and I keep giving each other electric shocks!
  6. WOW! Have you seen the forecast snow charts for Sunday and Monday?! The risk at this early stage is only given as >50% but the whole country is covered and with its direction it must bring more! Been working from home for 2 days (not as much fun as it sounds, especially with teens underfoot) but feel I have to show my face tomorrow in case I don't get in Mon
  7. Have a safe journey, Beka. Should be OK if you avoid the slush - just come back from walking the dog and it was icing up as we were coming home. Breaking news on News24 - 5000 homes in Sussex without electricity
  8. Radio Solent just reported that 50 people spent the night in Newport bus station: "one of the grimmest places on the planet, poor sods"
  9. Proper snow again here in Southampton since about 8:30, after a couple of snizzly showers overnight. Seems to be a bit of a breeze as the flakes are blowing about, not coming straight down as it did last night. Still only a couple of cms, but will try and get piccies/measurements at the peak. May I please pass my respects on to everybody who has been putting themselves at risk to help others.
  10. Huh! My kids' school website suggests logging on at 7am to find out if the kids have a snow day! Cheers, justinflavin - supposed to be heading that way in the morning but... I don't think so! Flickering lights seem to have stopped now, thank goodness.
  11. Hubby's colleague just texted to say he has just arrived home! Central Soton to Curdridge - 5 hours! Anybody else got flickering lights?
  12. "Drivers have begun abandoning their vehicles on the A27 at Park Gate because they are unable to get traction on the road due to snow and ice. The road is reportedly partially blocked between junction 9 of the M27 and Segensworth Road and Southampton Road, and queues are stretching back on to the motorway." Posted on the Daily Echo website at 6:48. Usual idiot comments underneath
  13. Started again in Southampton. Not heavy but big, fat flakes. Please, please, please carry on all night!!!
  14. Sorry to say it looks like the central South coast could miss everything for the next few days http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/pws/invent/weathermap/
  15. Just got back in after having to go and rescue the car from the top of the hill where I abandoned it! That was the most amazing snow I have ever seen - absolutely huge and Soton went from wet to white in less than 10 minutes. Probably lasted about 20 mins and had 2-3 cms. It has really warmed up now though and its turning to slush. Hopefully it gives everyone a chance to get home safely before the next lot: it was chaos going uphill at Woodmill. Quite a lot of blues and twos out and about already. I have driven in snow in Soton before, but it always disappeared as you drove. This just packed down into ice immediately. Very scary. Please don't go anywhere tomorrow if you can avoid it! Kate
  16. God, they're just awful, aren't they? I'd bring back the fridge magnets they used to have when I was a kid! And since when has the UK been khaki???!
  17. Yes, it was very beautiful. About 9:30, temp -4 C, with very thin and low grey cloud. I did think at the time that on a warm day it would have been called mist and that the moisture in the air was crystallising. "Diamond dust" is a lovely name for it! Hoping the dumping on Tuesday night is bad enough that I won't have to drive the lanes of North Hants on Weds morning <_< Kate
  18. Yup, lightning and almost instantaneous thunder! And more hail!
  19. Had a terrific hailstorm about an hour ago here in Southampton. Lasted only a few minutes but the hailstones were as big as peas and coming down really fast - thought the conservatory roof was going to come in! Didn't go out this morning, but I felt the steps and saw that what looked like water was sheer ice. People were walking in the road because it had been gritted. It rained for at least 10 hours yesterday but the snow from a few days ago has still not all melted. Still wishing for a White Christmas!
  20. Cripes - very glad I don't have to go anywhere much this week: those pics of the M4 are mad! Hope your better half gets home soon, WhiteFox. Still persisting down here in Soton.
  21. BBC News just showed the snow band pivoting through the night, with the southern end passing over Soton and Pompey, so there's still a chance!
