Guest here from snow-starved West Lancashire, but on the way to London, staying in Hammersmith till Tuesday eve. Am I right in thinking disruptive snow unlikely in central London over next 48 hrs?

Not posted much for several years but the beast lured me back in! Memories of the chat-related frustration indicating snow everywhere but western NW! Just hoping for snow surprises that were unforecastable a day or two before! I'm travelling to London this evening till Tues evening. Hopefully I'll make it back from the artic wasteland that might become the SE ;-) for a NW blizzard later in the week!

I know models can overdo snow, but theres a few chances there, surely even snow starved Preson and the rest of us west coasters would be unlucky to miss them all?
Yeah remember earlier when I said i wasnt going to obsess about snow...not going so well is it.
Hi Chris - sat at Preston Station atm pondering next week's West Coast possibilities too! Thing is I work in London Mon/Tues so personally it'll be interesting! Expect the unexpected I reckon. I simply cannot believe we'll be snow free in a weeks time...

Interesting start to my working week - 6pm train Preston to London Sunday, back Tuesday evening. Somehow I don't think it will be snow free one or both ends looking at today's charts. Will be taking extra essentials!

Chris an IMBY reply
All i can say is my dad who was 87 when he passed away last year said the snow we had in the run up to Christmas 2010/11 was the most severe he'd seen in Preston and he was a Prestonian from birth.
December 2010 was epic here on the Fylde Coast - remember it so well. Huge cloud mass off the Irish Sea hitting the cold air and no 'option' but to give masses of heavy snow. My own uneducated thoughts here now are that being on the the coast MAY actually help with Irish Sea born lows and pockets of unstable air giving heavy prolonged snow/showers which would settle and accumulate in the v low temperature. Just my hopeful IMBY take though... :-)

Hi all - followed ppls thoughts here esp words about disruption. I live in Lancashire but also work in Hammersmith on Mondays and Tuesdays, travelling down on train on Sunday eve , back Tues eve. Serious question - is there a chance of being stuck in London? Thinking of taking a couple of days extra essentials! Looks like there are very real chances of heavy London snow to heavy NW snow later in the week!

Question - if this is lake effect and Irish Sea is feeding this, should we get something here (Fylde) sooner or later?
-
Come on - reach the Fylde Coast. Seems very slow moving whatever 'it' is - I've been looking at the same clouds/sky for about 30 mins now.

Salwick has a dusting - I am near Whalley at the moment belting it down - big flakes.

Should be OK, but you can check the road cameras later eg http://trafficcameras.uk/roads/ - shows possibly a dusting on the edges of the carriageway on parts of M61 so care required obviously.
Thanks - you'd think no cause for concern atm - I'm looking at the sunshine on the grass here on the Fylde Coast now!

We had planned to visit Manchester today - BBC app has heavy snow from 5pm through to 8 ish this evening. Any folk have a view on potential driving conditions M61/M6 at that time?

Not posted for a long time. '09-10 or 10-11 revisted this winter?

I have had my fill of none settling snow this winter! A couple of mm's that melts when the sun pops out isn't going to make up for missing out on the snow storm of the decade on Friday night!
TD if ever there was a case of 'ditto that' then this was it! Couldn't have put it better myself! Ok got falling snow but hardly anything to show for it come Saturday morning!

At Leyland station freezing cold as everywhere else is I guess! Any chance of another battleground scenario later this week?

We (the North West) can get snow from any angle, some angles favour certain areas more than others, and some seem to cash in no matter what. This year the snow has come mainly from the south as our cold has come mainly from the east and precipiation has been in the form of Atlantic lows coming up and hitting it. This favours the south of the region as the cold to the north east prevents the lows moving too far north, and if they do cross the whole region, they push the cold away turn to rain anyway. In 2009/10 our cold came from the North due to Greenland high pressure, we all cashed in then as the wind was slightly west of north and the Irish sea created convection. That is ideal for the otherwise entirely snowless north and west of Lancashire. In a direct easterly, so beloved of our southern cousins, we are generally sheltered from snow coming off the North Sea by the Pennines, this is also true of a north easterly and even straight northerly's, but the western downslope of the Pennines, like Oldham and Macclesfield can get hit. And there are also places, like Saddleworth, the Buxton area, and the north Pennines around Alston in Cumbria, that get snow regardless of the direction of the wind, due to their greater exposure to easterlies, and added height in marginal westerly types.
A very good summary TD.

We had ALL the precipitation - all snow, heavy stuff but wet snow that only began to settle in the latter part of the night an had all but melted by Saturday lunchtime. I know I'm cursed by lack of altitude but many coastal/low-lying areas seemed to have done OK from this. Then again, swings and roundabouts. I did OK in January, and as my sig pic shows in Dec 2010 was tight in the sweetspot when others missed out. Doesn't help the feeling of missing out this time though! Maybe there'll be another attack at the w/e.

Just one post from me this morning. With others like around Preston, Leyland etc have missed out spectacularly from this event. So frustrating hearing and seeing news about the amounts of snow. I now have a 1cm line left against the garden wall where it hasn't yet melted. I know altitude is an issue given my location but to not be at the party at such an event is so disappointing. For those who got loads of snow I am genuinely happy and hope you enjoy it all safely and make lots of memories. Rant over!
