Ah, I think I may now know exactly when this ancient home video of mine was shot!
I vaguely remember it being after Xmas that year. I also remember it started melting rather quickly when morning came, which would suggest it was a marginal setup as a previous poster suggested.

I didn't expect to be posting in a convective thread again this year, but things are certainly looking interesting going into tomorrow. Just read a Fergietweet saying the UKMO hail modeling indicates possible 10-15mm hail.

Ugh, I hate the Express! And the shoddy sensationalist journalism around these events which misleads the general public to believe that the storm will hit the whole country, when it's actually going to affect mainly northern areas...so on Tuesday there'll probably be loads of people moaning that forecasters got it wrong with cries of 'where's the hurricane?' etc . . .
I'm coming in a bit late on all this, but on Friday I was saying to my dad that I couldn't wait to see how the Daily Express would cover this and whether they'd do a headline with the traditional '(weather) TO (verb) BRITAIN!' template. Then today I saw Saturday's front page -

Just seen two lightning strikes from the cell to my N/NE! It's been slowly intensifying, so heads up anyone in it's path.

consider them suitably booted
Excellent, all working fine again thanks.

The GFES ensembles are stuck on yesterday's 18z. Can someone give them a hefty kick?

Latest tweets from Ian Fergusson aren't optimistic :
Major last-gasp tweaks to our UKMO models now greatly reduce t-storm chances overnight and activate these Weds 8-10am SE into E Anglia. However, model still keen on some storms potentially SE into E Anglia later tonight, ahead of main threat later into Essex/Suffolk/Norfolk.

We are also going to Live Stream through the Netweather Player the footage Live to Netweather in full HD.
Oo, nice one. I've always hoped more UK people/organizations would start doing stuff like this.

Incredibly dark here, rain falling and cloud/scud moving very fast indeed. This one needs watching!
-
GEFS have also been stuck for me since June 5th 18z. Can someone give it a kick?

My sister is in Taunton today and has just txt to tell me there is lightning, talk about rub it in lol
Ah, that'll almost certainly be from the same cell I was just watching to the N/NE of me (as is Taunton). I saw one bolt of lightning from it although I wasn't watching until about 30 minutes ago. A good omen for others hopefully.

Here are the four shots of lightning here in Somerset I've got so far this evening :
One of them has to be the longest bit of lightning I've seen!
-
Just came in from a fairly decent storm. Decent enough for a couple of lightning pics anyway. Lightning was mostly towards my south/southwest. I had to come in because the rain is torrential and lightning obscured by rain, but it's still rumbling on outside now.
-
heavy rain, wild wind, plenty thunder no blitzen seen yet tho,no need to water the garden tonite !!!!
I've got the rain and wind but no thunder yet.
Ah, nevermind. I just heard some.
The wind really has picked up from almost nothing.

Just looked outside and the sky is very ominous to the South. May be just heavy rain, but it's impressive to look at!

I remember this storm well. It was a Friday, late afternoon and I was travelling from Guildford to Brighton watching the clouds build from the west after a glorious day. The storm looked ferocious from a distance and didn't disappoint. Hopefully see some more this summer.
I'd be really interested to hear if anyone else has memories of this storm. That video was shot a long time before I was interested in the technical side of weather stuff and the internet age, so I didn't know anything was coming our way until seeing the lightning and darkness on the horizon. The main thing I remember is how massive, dark and smothering it felt. It was incredibly humid and the worst thing was you couldn't open the windows because the rain and wind was so bad. The strike at 0:33 in Part 2 is still the closest lightning strike I've filmed.
There was also a record asthma epidemic associated with this storm, referenced here.
The video was filmed from this location, with the front windows facing south-west. If you go to streetview level it's easy enough to work out the orientation. That's the Marconi tower in the background.

It's really weird to open a thread in Netweather and find out it's about a video you shot 17 years ago.
Glad everyone likes it though. It was the first thunderstorm I ever video'd.

People hoping for exciting weather don't want people to die anymore than people hoping for an exciting F1 race.
Looking forward to see what Saturday brings. (if anything!)

The SPC multimedia briefing is on Youtube
, in case anyone is interested. -
Haven't had a storm here since June 2009 and it seems like its been forever!
Me too! June 25th, 2009 to be precise.
Even though it's been almost 2 years I feel like I can't complain quite yet given how good a photo opportunity that last storm was.

That one took me by surprise! One big rumble of thunder and a lot heavy rain here from that line.

It was around 2030hrs yesterday evening. I had a look at the timelapse from a camera at a different location, and the wispy white 'mist' developed very quickly from the ground and moved upwards and laterally(?) in the direction of the clouds. Scud maybe? I'll try and convert it to video and put it on Youtube, though the quality isn't that great.
