So there you have it just 5 Spaces left Overall

    4 on Tour 3

    1 on Tour 5

    Paul

Tried to send you a personal message, but the forum wont let me. Says you cannot receive any more messages.

    Sent it on face book

  2. Cheers Dave, already dslr'd up on team canon :winky: was thinking maybe more for daytime shots as triggers seem a bit hit and miss and my screen shots from vids in Arizona were not of the greatest quality, just wondered if i had stumbled upon an unintentional chasers must-have, maybe a bit pricey for specialist use tho, interesting none the less

    Craig

If you have a sudden rush of blood and decide to buy one, will be very interested in seeing the results.

  3. I assume you are meaning the Nikon v1 or J1. Both capable of shooting lightning, but the common standard for shooting lighting is to keep the shutter open for as long as possible, therefore the 20 images before and after are not necessary.

The 1 series uses video to capture images which is why they advertise the 20 frames either side. I imagine during the day time it might be reasonably efficient at capturing lighting, but it will still require you to hit the shutter release at the right time.

The 1 series camera is new, and aimed at the expensive end of point and shoot giving some flexibility with lens choice. Of the 2 the V1 would be the better camera but considerably more expensive that a lot of mid range DSLR's

I don't know enough about the 1 series, but they would not be my instant choice for lighting or extreme weather, I would be looking to a DSLR or a bridge camera (Same controls as the DSLR, but fixed lens)

For twilight and night time shots the DSLR will get you a result fairly constantly, and they also give you loads of flexibility. On the other hand the 1 series is small and light and a very good camera. There are other similar styles out there if that's the way you want to go.

    Happy choosing

Just had a quick look on line, the J1 and V1 both have bulb capability so will do night / low light shots. They get very good reviews and take sharp crisp images. On of the small issues with them is the size of the sensor, which tends to limit the wider angles when zoomed out, the other is as it is so new the RAW images are not compatible with lightroom / Photoshop or some of the Apple products, which leave you to use the Nikon software only. However if you are taking JPEGs then it should cause you no issues.

  4. Any camera experts out there? Saw an advert on tv for the Nikon 1 and started looking into it, it boasts Smart Photo Selector: always gets the best shot. Shoots 20 high-resolution images before and after you release the shutter.

Is this therefore the best camera for lightning ever ?

    Craig

  5. This is likely as good a place to let others know about the Firefox 1-ClickWeather add-on this is free. It can be synchronised to whatever location in the US/UK you want and i'm currently running on it with the US Doppler and Satellite enabled. Also gives locational forecast & nowcasts with additional coverage in the options.

Sadly not available for Firefox 9.1

  6. Hopefully my other half is going to allow me to come out with her Canon DSLR. First time I've taken a good DSLR camera chasing, been out 3 times before this year. So may need to some advice, especially lightning photography, from the pros coming out on Tour 4! Which reminds me, need to purchase a remote release.

Will be fun. Lots we can do.

  7. Ok pretty sure this was when we stopped for the last time before we headed for that Gas Station and then ultimately headed towards El Reno for the night, if so we were about 5 Miles SW Of Woodward and just South of a Line Of 3 East Moving Supercells, if you were pointing West North West at the one behind us this was Tornado Warned but no reports came from it, the last report of the day was our Shattuck Tornado from around 730pm, the Brief Rope Funnel we all saw but could not get pictured due to low contrast did not even make it onto the reports though.

It is an Interesting feature but ultimately can not be 100% sure from the pictures if either a, Scud Sucker or b, There was something which was a brief spin up and rope out.

So cannot call this one, just a maybe to go with the many!

Pretty much my thoughts, but just a little teaser to whet the appetite and get the grey matter ticking over. Roll on May wish it was sooner :D

  8. Here one to ponder over, I was browsing my images from last year and found this little teaser at the bottom.

    Question is what its it?

    Please feel free to speculate.

    Nikon D3s

    24mm ( 24-70mm f2.8 Nikkor Lens )

    ISO 1000

    15 Sec

    f7.1.

Taken in the dark between 2100 and 2200

The area of interest is so small it was a bugger to blow up big enough. I only noticed it when I printed the image.

  9. Ok as promised some numbers on what makes up the tours for Chase 2012 - Strange one this year with lots of chopping and changing, drops out (Only to be expected with the Recession etc) and tour hopping, but we are finally down to the last 6 spaces left! An amazing fact that there is plenty of space on the tour that statistically gets booked out first every year as well.

    Tour 1 : On Hold

    Tour 2 : Sold Out

    Tour 3 : 4 Spaces Left - 20th to 31st May 2012

    Tour 4 : 1 Space Left - 31st May to 11th June 2012

    Tour 5 : 1 Space Left - 13th to 24th June 2012

We do have a few people interested in some of these tours so if any lurkers are thinking about a late booking now might be the time to think about it as over the last few years we have had between 3-4 late bookings.

Just over 11 weeks to go until the start - Cant wait and will put up the list of runners and rider over the next few days.

    Regards

    Paul S

    Bring it on. :good:

  10. I booked mine a while ago and done the instant payment thing. Only thing is that it hasn't been credited from my credit card yet. I have confirmation of the booking etc. I'm wondering if they take it upon arrival.

They seemed to have different rates. My said pay up front, the slightly more expensive flexible one was a debit on the day system. Who knows!

  11. how much are the rooms? is it straight forward enough to do?

    Very easy

Look up the Great Western Irving rather than Dallas., once on the website just click on rates and availability which was top left. Gives a number of options. I went for the cheapest which worked out to be approx $66 ish plus tax. Paid up front to get the rate. Total cost was £44 ($70.83) just need to remember to bring my card on the day.

Booking was for one in a king sized, no smoking, internet room with the standard US breakfast.

Nice thing is they have a shuttle from the airport so no taxi fares.
