Storms and Convective discussion - June 2023
Derbyshire_snow replied to Supacell's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Guaranteed they either go west over the Peaks or just to the East of Rother Valley it is so frustrating. -
I went up yesterday morning they had put the majority of it out the media sensationalised it as usual claiming it was Lady Canning Plantation and for those who know the area many will refer to the woods full of pine trees as LCP and from the reports they made it sound like it was the actual woods that had gone up. But in reality it was the heather above LCP that had caught fire near to Ox Stones that spread across the moorland. I think it is only by luck we had a cool easterly wind and cool tempretures and the wind direction pushing the fire away from the plantation. Had the wind been westerly and had we had the heat we had last summer the whole wood could have gone. Thankfully the damage is far less severe than it could have been.

Lying snow at Southport...in the middle of May?!
Derbyshire_snow replied to Weather-history's topic in Historic Weather
I have witnessed Snow in Sheffield in May a few times can't remember the year exactly but mid 90s I think it was when we had a dumping of Snow in Sheffield that was quite memorable I was only young at time. -
As I am sure many Sheffielders will allude to we tend to get big falls of snow or none at all It is not very often we get just dustings of snow. The fall of snow we just had surely has to be a record for length of snowfall too must have easily been 28-30 hours none stop snowfall in the Southern half of Sheffield/North Derbyshire. Had this event taken place in late November early December like 2010 I reckon many parts would have come close to surpassing it. But what put pay to the chances of that was the lack of intensity of the snow for periods in the day which lead to thaws of the laying snow. I am sure those with more knowledge than can give a better explanation but I think it is the length of daylight and ground temperatures that played a big part in us not seeing falls that we experienced in 2010. One thing is for sure we must have the most extreme differences in weather pf any English city. You can go from 1 part of Sheffield and there be no snow and be pouring down with rain and then you could travel to another part of the city and it be a raging blizzard and a ft of snow. 2010 was something else though and totally different set up we got stuck under a persistent streamer and ended up with 2ft in places yet places 15-20 mile either side got a fraction of that. It would be interesting to know if there is a scientific reasoning for it rather than if being luck of the draw.

Lowedges, Greenhill, Norton top of Herdings looks like they have hit around 40cm Thats a friends photo from Greenhill around 40cm and seen photos from Lowedges that show the same. I would hazard a guess Owler Bar Ringinglow will be 50cm+ Owler bar was shut overnight as blowing snow blocked the road and road up to Ringinglow goes above 400m and usually a good big deeper.

Wow I fell asleep and woke up and the snow has gone into to. Overdrive full on blizzard out there I cleared snow off the patio chairs about 8pm yesterday evening and there is about 20cm fresh on that. I would say there is easily a foot of snow out there now here in Dronfield definitely was an Amber warning. Another thing to note is power/phone cables caked in snow wouldn't be suprised if many are brought down.
