  1. And, back in the world of the observed rather than projections, a massive complex sunspot group has emerged. http://www.spaceweather.com
  2. Hi Rain123 and welcome to Netweather If you could put your location in your profile, it would help the rest of us to understand which bit of our region you're referring to. Thanks!
  3. 13.9 at Hampton Waterworks. It certainly didn't feel like there was an Arctic blast here. That's not saying it wasnt' cold with wintery precipitation in the Highlands, but I do wish the media would start valuing accuracy over sensationalism as far as forecasts go.
  4. Well, that's only to be expected as we go to solar minimum, innit! It still doesn't mean it's going to snow all over South Wales for four months each winter between now and the uptick in activity leading to the next solar maximum, though...
  5. So buying tons of winter soup veg on the basis of the forecasts for the weekend wasn't necessarily a good idea then?
  6. And a discussion from the World Service - available for about 6 days, as far as I can see. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02m9lpj
  7. As weather history said earlier, It's a solar eclipse, not a lunar one.
  8. More lazy journalism about the effects on power generation, this time from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-31951768 The proportion of UK electricity generated from solar power is absolutely minimal and it's not as if it doesn't get a lot darker every night for a rather longer period.
  9. You're too far south to see them tonight. Although there's still a storm event going on, it's calmed down from last night and I think you probably need to be north of Belfast, Liverpool, Newcastle to even catch them on the northern horizon tonight.
  10. Why bother to read anythig the Daily Express writes? It's always wrong!!!!
  11. Pity they were 100%, completely, totally and utterly wrong then, wasn't it!!!!
  12. Now I've finally managed to work out which area of the country I live in... Grotty day weather-wise, although at least the wind had dropped a bit when I had to do some stuff in the garden for my parents in the early afternoon. The good news is that six weeks after his pacemaker was fitted Dad's finally recovered enough from the hospital-acquired pneumonia to have the energy and speed of thought to start driving again. Friday's forecast doesn't look good for eclipse watching.
  13. Deleted - how did I end up posting in the south-west thread rather than the south-east. Doh!
  14. Early plans for Eastbourne Airbourne: http://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/local/plans-for-airbourne-2015-1-6628980
  15. The Faroe Islands? Otherwise, just make sure you've got a good south-easterly view in the hours after sunrise and get eclipse glasses. Where you are, I guess the Sun will be about 85-90% covered.
  16. In a total eclipse, it gets noticeably cooler and the darkness is very eerie, with a bluish tinge to it, if that makes any sense. I don't know about the effects on birds as I was at sea for the one I saw (June 30 1973) and don't remember whether there was a change in wind speed. Not much help, sorry.
  17. New island emerges off Tonga: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/tongafrenchpolynesia/11463853/First-photographs-emerge-of-new-Pacific-island-off-Tonga.html
  18. There was a very pretty, faint rainbow from the mizzle just before sunset. As the sun was so low in the sky, the rainbow very nearly a half-circle.
  19. Well, it has been here. There have been two frosts all winter and one ten-minute show shower. I'm intrigued. What link do you see between last year's wet winter and the low level of solar activity, as measured through sunspot activity? Many on here would think that would indicate snow not increased rainfall and cold rather than the relatively mild temperatures that meant Somerset got inches of rain rather than feet of snow.
  20. A total eclipse is so magical - even an 85% doesn't compare. I was lucky enough to see the June 1973 one - the diamond ring effect is something I'll never forget.
  21. First bus-conducting job of the year for which I didn't need a warm coat. Even on the open platform it was lovely. Then I had a pleasant stroll back across Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens. I'll see your stormtrooper by Primark and raise you a pink panther near Sloane Square. She'd been on an anti-fracking demo round the Embankment.
  22. Point taken, although emotional arguments on one side of a debate tend to preclude rational arguments from the other.
