There has been quire a lot of snow melt overnight, must have had rain/sleet here. But we are in the middle of quite a hefty hail/snow shower at the moment and it looks as though another streamer has set itself up right over the top of us again. Whats the chances of this staying as snow/hail ? i thought it was going to warm up !

Just had another heavy hail/snow shower here, more on the way for this afternoon by the looks of of. Hope the temp stays down. Currently 1.3c.
-
Chucking it down again here. My dad has confirmed that this is Preston's largest accumulation of snow since the late 40's

I find it so frustrating at times like these with the weather reports.. if it's not happening in the southern half of the country then it's not happening at all.
I'd be really peed off right now if I hadn't have had my snow fix in Manchester at the weekend, because it's just bone dry here with a hard frost!! Still, it would be quite nice to see a few flakes falling but I can't see it happening somehow. Really good to hear about this North West snowfall, excellent stuff
I agree, if it aint happening in the SE then its not cold anywhere

After having a bit of a walk round, i reckon its potentially the heaviest snowfall i've ever seen here. We had periods of heavy snow when i was a kid but it was never this deep. I don't keep records but if it isn't i'd be surprised.
-
Just been outside with my tape measure max flat depth is 7" more of an average is between 6 & 6.5" and its still snowing !
-
Am now finding this hard to believe. Its dupmed down at least another 2 inches overnight, looks like its more. I cleared the drive yesterday and it is just as deep this morning. This is now the heaviest accumulated fall of snow we have had here since the 80s without a doubt. Where snow has fallen on undisturbed snow from yesterday i would not be surprised if it was 6" deep. Very, very rare in this part of the country.

That streamer that's feeding into the Ulverston area is really pepping up. Showers are going back as far as Anglesey now. Its been active all day.
-
what are your thoughts for Preston tonight? anymore potential snow?
No idea. Nothing forecast, but then again the snow we got last night wasn't forecast.
-
There are some really impressive tops to those clouds out to the West, its snowing heavily somewhere over there
-
Already starting to freeze here.
-
Its going to be interesting when it freezes tonight. If it stays cold for the rest of the week this will certainly be around for Christmas. In the deepest parts here its 4" but an average of 3". Heaviest snow for years since 1996 to be precise.

Showers are moving N of us here, looks like the coast and the area between Preston & Lancaster is getting a real pasting. Beacon Fell looks a cert for tomorrow, its right in the firing line. You can see all the dark clouds from here looks pretty impressive.
-
The snowman we made at 8 o clock, now has another few cm of snow on top of it, still snowing heavily here. I think this caught the council out up here. Gritters are only just on the roads, and its the first time ever i have seen a snow plough out ploughing the roads round here.
-
Looks like my rant last night worked been in this house 10 years and its the heaviest its been since we moved in. Still snowing too.

Same here mate, same here. 5pm with darkness fallen and it's coming down as RAIN. Even around midday we were getting snow showers despite the fact that the morning's cover was thawing.
It's like some sort of inexplicable Sod's Law which exists solely to starve us of snow. Christmas Eve could give us a battleground event yet I don't even feel optimistic, because I've become so disillusioned. I guess the fact that it's the Christmas run-in makes it particularly hard to take.
The thing is, last nights non event i can take, i never expected snow as it was marginal at best, today was a different matter altogether though. All the forecasts were pointing to snow, the conditions pointed to snow but again it just doesn't happen. You'd think i'd learn after so many let downs in the past and believe it or not i am old enough to know better - especially annoying as i now have kids who are at the age when they would enjoy just a bit of the white stuff in their own back garden. You can bet your life that the next time we get a mild set up like this we will get showers all day says it all really.
-
Well if that's the best way we can get snow then i might as well give up. We have not even got a covering here, its been rain showers since 2.30ish. I know other people have snow but we have always had snow from this set up before, why not this time.
-
how deep is it in the centre? its about 2mm here and melting and im a suburb
About the same. More hail/grapuel than snow. Bit of a let down up to now, normally never fail to get a decent snowfall from this set up, but it has failed up to now. Temp seems to be holding under 2c so not melting much at the moment. Hope we get some showers when it starts to cool over the next few hrs.
-
More out over Irish sea, give it 45 mins or so and the next batch will be along.
-
Hail shower here atm. Temp has dropped as the wind picks up. No snow yet though.
Hail/grapuel has eased off and its now snowing - at last
-
Moderate Snow mixed with hail now, 2cm lying at the moment.
Lucky you

Can anyone more knowledgeable than me explain how we always get showers here in a W/SW/NW wind direction at any other time of the year. Today the wind is W/SW and up to now we have had 1 hail /snow shower early morning and another hail/rain shower 5 mins ago. Bad luck/sods law any explanations welcome.
-
Suns out here, melting underway. At least the birds are happy, yesterdays food is starting to defrost.
-
Unless the wind direction changes i can see it staying dry here all day. Look at how the IOM has broken that latest band of showers up !

Chaos on the roads round here this morning. Heavy hail shower earlier has frozen to the roads, no grit and all the major roads are like a skating rink. Minor accidents all over the place it has just taken my wife over an hr to drive a mile to Sainsburys. Still showers out there, but going South of here atm. Not as much melt as i'd thought either i am sure snow will be here for Christmas day.
