I really like the last photo, great shot

Have to disagree on your first point, many recent christmas's especially in the north have been frosty affairs with snow never that far away either occuring a few days before or just after, even last year we had a bit of frost in the morning, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006 were all really quite cold affairs.
There has been a fair share of cold weather during xmas in the last 10 yrs or so,but for me the last 2 have been mild. Maybe this yr we will get a return of some cold weather during xmas, but maybe not.

I recall that most southern areas were heavily hit by an easterly on 5-7 December 1995- it was not as long-lasting as the cold and snow from northerlies that most of Scotland, NE England and parts of W Britain experienced on 24-31 December, but it did mean that a large majority had at least some of the white stuff.
The problem with the 24-31 December period, if I remember rightly, is that the polar low that hit Scotland full in the face on Christmas Eve drifted out into the North Sea come Christmas Day, so most of England and Wales missed it altogether. It appears that the polar low did affect northern parts of NE England as well, as I recall a prolonged snow shower on Christmas Eve at Cleadon that deposited 3cm.
Further south there were snow showers in parts of Ireland, Wales and NW England on Christmas Eve which gave Lancaster a white Christmas. Some scattered snow showers dotted about on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but significant falls and accumulations were largely confined to north and east-facing coasts.
The similar late December 2000 spell, albeit shorter-lived, was rather more "productive" taking the country as a whole as the polar low tracked right across Britain- although unlike 1995, the main blast arrived just after Christmas and so only limited areas saw a real white Christmas.
Nonetheless I'm pretty certain that Christmas Day 1995 was, and remains, comfortably the most widespread white Christmas in terms of snow lying since 1981.
I got more snow in late December 2000 then i did in Dec 1995,although the cold was more severe in 95. I got a few inches of snow from that polar low in Dec 2000,the 27th i think to be exact. Most of it hung around till new yrs eve. On xmas eve 95 we were forcast to get snow overnight, but coming back from the pub in the small hrs the skies were crystal clear and we only ended up getting a severe frost much to my dismay.

now for me you must pick months or years you actually experienced yourself 1st hand..none of this id like jan 1740 followed by feb 1895 nonsense personsally i would go with the 1st 2weeks of dec 81 followed by the last 2 weeks of dec 78...followed by jan 79...followed by the 1st 2 weeks of feb 78 finishing with the last 2 weeks of feb 86....honourable mentions go to jan 82...feb 79,91..im not big fan of jan 87..yes extremely cold..but short lived...after 1991..nothing has been cold enough or snowy enough to have registered in my brain.
I agree with your post, but one post 1991 winter month i would give an honourable mention to would be Dec 1995.

The cold spell of Jan 82 was what made me begin to have an interest in weather. I had never seen so much snow in Ireland before. The record Irish min temp was set in Jan 82,-19c i think in the north irish midlands.

Some snow would be nice  .
But i would personally like to something similar to the cold snap we had in late December 2000.
It was my first white xmas as i lived in B'pool at the time, we had snow on the ground for 5 days (good 2 to 3 inches or so), and temps down to -8c, and up to 0c-2c during the day.
But that type of cold snap wouldn't produce any snow down here, so easterly winds with heavy dry snow on and off for several days would be nice.
I remember that cold snap in late Dec 2000 well,i got some snow out of it aswell. I thought it was a fairly potent cold snap that one and im surprised its not mentioned more often, and also the cold snap of late Feb 2001, in Dublin on the 27th it snowed for the guts of 24hrs.

I would love lots of very cold frosty clear crisp days(which is fav weather after snow) and of course a few snow events. If i got that i would be very happy. But unfortunatly i probably wont

yep that is right PP
Mr Fish was soooo mis-quoted that night. he was referring to a call made to his friend about a hurricane out in the states to which his reply was
"Well a lady just phoned to say that there's a hurricane on the way, but if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't"
i do feel sorry for Mr Fish, seems he really should be allowed to set the record straight once and for all by going back on national TV and getting the BBC to show the whole forecast then apologise to him for the atrocious way in which his forecast was allowed to be edited
Well thats something i never knew about that clip of Mr Fish,i always thought he was talking about the storm. If i was him i would have been very annoyed by the way it was edited. It also gives the public a kind of bad view of forecasters which isnt right.

Great photos,well done.

Until i was 17 we had no central heating but we did have radiaters. We use to use a superser alot in the morning in winter, they were very handy

Also whilst I don't want to worry you sundog models do have 94L developing and crossing DR as well sometime early next week, though these models may be too far east its tough to say...
My advice is keep a very close eye on this thread and if something does form just to keep an eye on it, you should still be able tto stay there unless it really bombs out however could be an issue who knows?
Yes i will be keeping an eye on things and on 94L. If it does cross DR hopefully it wont be too bad. I hope the flight over will be smooth as im a nervous flyer at the best of times and if the flight is near any storms out there in the Atlantic im sure there would be quite alot of turbulance.

They certainly are which is the worst thing about winter and in Janurary time i am looking forward for the days to get longer.
Apart from that i love winter and on selfish reasons only i want it to be a cold one, i hope people don't get affected by the rising gas prices when(or if) a cold snap/spell arrive though. As people said when people want a mild winter a average or below winter will occur. Be interesting how many people will be getting excited when they see a cold chart appearing or if a cold snap is due to arrive for certain.
I think many will get excited if a cold snap is due to arrive for certain. They may say now that they dont want it to be cold cos of the high cost of gas prices, but when it comes down to it if a cold snap is on the horizon this winter i think that the excitment will take over regardless of the gas prices.

I dont like temps over about 25c and especially combined with humidity. I havent experianced temps over that in 2 yrs since i havent been away since 2006 and last summer here and this summer here have been crap. However im heading off to the dominican republic on monday for two weeks, but at least i can handle the heat when on holidays cos you can cool down in the pool or sea. I cant sunbathe for too long cos i just cant handle it

Thank you Roger and Jack Wales for the replies. I will be keeping a close eye on things before i go and when im over there as im sure they will have some sort of internet cafe in the complex im staying in. One thing i do know is it certainly wont be clear blue skies all the time for the two weeks im over there, there will be at the very least im sure heavy thundery downpours there from time to time, and the possibly a tropical storm thrown in too. But that is something that i accept given the time of yr that im going.

Im heading off to the Dominican Republic on the 25th of August for 2 weeks, just wondering is it true that the Dominican Republic is rarely directly hit by hurricanes? Im getting married out there, the last thing i want on my wedding day is to be in the middle of a bloody hurricane

Don't know what to make of this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/15/go...ic_ice_mystery/
It's entitled 'Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered' from a website caleld The Register, with the article by someone called Steven Goddard.
Interesting that, however i imagine certain people would tear it to pieces and say its bs

I dont get air frosts till about mid Nov or so. When i was younger i would get the them sometimes during the second half of Oct. The winter before last i didnt get one until a few days before xmas!
-
Frequant heavy snow, below average tempetures, Very windy at times, Cold and grey with some record breaking cold frosty weather.
I think your letting your heart rule your head but we can dream
-
If i was a betting man i would go for a mild and dryish winter. I reckon winter be drier then this summer has been. Since this summer has been a washout that might not be hard even for winter

Today is Lughnasad.
A cross-quarter day, the halfway point between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox for the northern hemisphere.
First time ive ever heard of it,learn something new everyday as they say
-
This winter will do what most winters do nowadays and that will be letting most of us bloody down again!

I think August will be a very average month, i will go for 16.0 please
