Autumn 2020 - Moans, Ramps & Chat
NorthYorksWeather replied to Seasonal Trim's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Perfect day here today with blues skies, light winds and 21c. Some grand views over the Vale of York today and a few places were close to freezing this morning, especially in the Yorkshire Dales where skies remained clear for longest. -

Very autumnal today with a high of just 15c thanks to the NE wind and blanket cloud. Some of my weather stations only just getting into double figures this afternoon. -

Felt very autumnal this morning with a few spots locally down to 5/6c. This is despite 850hpa temps well into the teens so an impressive temperature inversion. -

You can get "aerial poles" designed for TV masts from places such as B&Q, Tool station or Screwfix. I regularly use these for my weather station network, although I usually mount them against something. -

Its a Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station so a highly regarded brand but it could be possible posited incorrectly such as on a roof or surrounded by concrete or buildings. This mornings minimum temperature seems very high as well. -

First Ground and Air Frost 2020-2021 season
NorthYorksWeather replied to damianslaw's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Thanks James. Whilst it doesnt beat August 2018 where Goathland fell to 0.1c it was a fairly impressive widespread rural summer frost. It fell to 2.5c here beating my previous August minimum of 3.4c. -
Cold Minimum Temps Summer 2020
NorthYorksWeather replied to NorthYorksWeather's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
St Harmon in Wales down to 0.0c this morning. My coldest station was at Ravenseat Farm, home to Amanda Owen (Yorkshire Shepherdess) high up in Yorkshire Dales with a low of 2.9c. -
St Harmon in Wales recorded an air frost this morning with a low of -0.1c. Here in North Yorkshire we have some notably cold minimum temps so far this month. Keld in the Yorkshire Dales recorded a low of 1.4c on the 12th of July. This morning Yockenthwaite, also in the Dales, recorded a low of 1.6c. This comes off the back of June where Goathland in the North York Moors recorded a minimum of -0.4c, the first ever summer air frost I have see here since I've had my network of weather stations. Here are this mornings minimums across North Yorkshire. Has anyone else found they have had notably cold minimum temps so far this summer?

Gusting to 57mph across the Yorkshire Dales currently. Shame my weather station at the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge is currently getting replaced, probably gusting 60mph plus up there. -

I checked the forecast last night and it showed clear skies from 1pm. Just checked updated forecast and satellite and it appears the cloud is going to be more stubborn than originally thought. -

6z GFS shows the storm risk transfer eastwards towards our neck of the woods for Friday. Been a frustrating few days as western areas get some good storms. When I lived in York I used to often find myself chasing down the A1079 towards Beverley and Hull, that often I used to call the road Tornado Alley. Lets hope the 6z GFS is right for Friday. -

Only 2013/14 was snowless here in the Howardian Hills. I thought maybe this winter would be the same but we managed a sloppy 2cm this morning lasted a few hours before it reached 11c this afternoon! -

On and off snow/sleet/graupel showers all morning in Sheffield whilst doing my round at work this morning. Slight covering above 200m in places such as Manor Top, Gleadless, Crookes etc. Some great convection this morning, took this photo from Wadsley Bridge shopping park whilst doing a delivery around 7.30am. Back home it's been mostly dry but very windy. The village had a gust of 68mph at 4am this morning. -

Living close to the east coast (20 miles inland) I keep a record on any winter convective events off the North Sea. Such as 850hpa, pressure, how much snow and at what elevation etc. Ive seen snow falling and laying with -7c upper 850s only on a couple of occasions since 2011 (at 53m asl) but it has always occurred at nighttime and the showers have been very beefy. Ideally for low levels sub -8c has always guaranteed snow for me at my elevation so I imagine similar would apply for convective westerlies on your side of the Pennines too. Monday looks like -5/6c 850s so probably snow falling above 300/400m before dropping lower on Tuesday and Wednesday as we see the colder upper air coming in from the west. Still a risk that lower levels could see something, but they would need some very heavy showers and ideally overnight or early morning. -

You may just have to go a bit over an hour from York to see snow. Take the A59 west and drive through Harrogate then shortly after the Menwith Hill RAF (The big golf balls) turn right and head to Greenhow Hill which is North Yorkshires highest village which sits around 400m asl. From there you could drop down to Pateley Bridge which is only 2 miles east or go to Stump Cross Caverns (underground caves) a mile to the west of Greenhow. If you willing to drive even further head west as someone previously mentioned to places like Grassington, Kettlewell or Buckden. Keep an eye on my twitter @northyorkswx or NorthYorkshireWeatherUpdates on FB. Il be updating where snow has fallen and how much etc.
