  1. Depending on location, batteries need changing every 2-4 years. Would highly recommend putting some ultra lithium batteries for maximum duration.
  2. I tested one of these a while ago against my Davis VP2 and safe to say I sent it straight back, temperature readings were as much as 3c higher than the Davis station in sunny calm conditions. I would highly recommend a Ventus W830 from Weather Spares. Same as the one Kirkcaldy Weather posted above but with console, I own around 20 of these and have tested vs my Davis station and there’s nothing between them.
  3. The further inland and the higher you are the more confident you can be of snow. Thursday morning looks like an all snow event away from the immediate coast, NMM showing this nicely. On Friday the winds veer north easterly and we start to bring in some convective showers off the North Sea but with 850hpa temps of -4 to -6c, which would probably limit any snow falling to high ground. NMM showing mostly rain for eastern areas on Friday with associated 850s. The long sea track of these NE winds is the issue with the North Sea still being relatively warm. Later in the weekend it looks like the 850s may lower somewhat and the winds turn more ENE which would increase the chance of anything from the NE falling as snow due to a shorter sea track. Our best bet of snow is disturbances in the flow such as this morning where we can see heavy more prolonged precip which include evaporative cooling which can help the snow level drop despite 850s only being -3/4c at best. For myself situated close to sea level only 25 miles from the coast, bar the odd surprise such as this morning I'm not expecting anything significant, I'm hoping that the high will eventually retrogress to Greenland and we see a pulse of colder air injected into the northerly flow so we don't have to worry above warm sectors etc. Meanwhile some decent frosts and some small temporary snowfall events to keep us interested.
  4. A layer of very wet snow here. The road between Pickering and Whitby is shut by the police this morning so it must be treacherous out there.
  5. Evaporative cooling has now kicked in and we have wet snow falling. Temp 0.5c dew 0.0c
  6. 1.5c here with rain 25 miles inland from coast. Dew point 1.1. Heavy stuff not arrived yet which could aid evap cooling.
  7. Grand ord day climbing up Pen y Ghent. Didn’t get above freezing all day above 400m. More snow to come for inland elevated areas tonight and this snow is going nowhere fast. No sign of any snow for back home at low elevation for now so trip to hills will have to continue.
  8. Absolute carnage on the A59 between Skipton and Harrogate this evening. Snowing down to 100m asl an no sign of the streamer letting up any time soon.
  9. A top gust of 75mph overnight near Settle. Nothing too out of the ordinary for mid winter at 1600ft. Few places higher up with settling snow in the Dales but more problems with black ice as skies cleared after last night deluge.
  10. A weather station above Settle at 480m asl has just seen a gust of 73mph courtesy of Storm Bella. Could see 80 + there later this evening.
  11. This evenings 12z GFS is indicating low level snow fall for parts of Yorkshire on Monday. I find the GFS fairly decent for snowfall accumulation so this bodes well for those in the area of snowfall on the below chart. Let’s hope it doesn’t change on the 18z as it shows snowfall for here.
  12. From experience though Scott these accumulation charts from NMM often over egg snow amounts. This model only goes out to 36 hours so Mondays possible snow event that could effect parts of Yorkshire won’t show until tomorrow morning.
  13. There’s been a couple of snow events on high ground in the region so far this month but it would be nice to see some snow settling at lower elevations. Only a small dusting here on Xmas Eve and no sign of anything here on the models currently albeit a cold outlook. Here is the latest NMM snow accumulation to 1am Monday morning which should be taken with a large pinch of salt, what is certain is that the Yorkshire Dales, Pennines and Peak District should see snow accumulation in the next 30 hours.
  14. Yesterday morning was rather special on the North York Moors. We were the first ones out running on the old iron stone railway line at Rosedale Abbey around 9am. Clear blue skies, -2c and around 3 inches of powdery snow at roughly 350m asl. Certainly a Christmas Day morning I wont be forgetting in a hurry. Meanwhile in the Yorkshire Dales, Keld fell to -5.4c which is the coldest any of my weather stations have fallen to on Christmas Day.
  15. Huge warm sector over Malton apparently. A very positive 6z GFS, will be interesting to see if there’s any support for this evolution in the Ensembles.
  16. Took my new car which is a my first 4wd car out in the snow on Yorkshire Wolds this evening. Perfect grip and a pleasure to drive.
  17. Cracking first day of winter here. Keld in the Yorkshire Dales down to -3c overnight and these were my office views across Northdale in North York Moors this morning.
  18. Not too bad here 25 miles from east coast. Light rain for much of the day only adding up to 3.2mm so far.
  19. RAF Leeming (Met Office site) in North Yorkshire recorded a low of -0.1c which is the coldest September minimum they have ever recorded. Meanwhile on my network the coldest was once again Ravenseat in the Yorkshire Dales with an impressive minimum of -2.3c.
  20. Cleghorn in Scotland fell to -6.6c this morning, not far off the record September minimum. This was of course a recording from an amateur station so no record would of been broken anyway. Already close to freezing in parts of Scotland and North Yorkshire this evening.
  21. First air frost in a couple of spots across North Yorkshire this morning. Possible more over the next few nights.
