You're right....except for the snow which prevented me, in my 4x4 and winter tyres, from getting out of the village to go to Kendal tonight. Well, I could have got there, but it would have been silly, and it's still snowing now....just.....and below freezing.....just.

Been snowing very lightly for a couple of hours here, but not amounting to more than the barest fraction of an inch. Just crept above freezing too. Certainly nothing momentous here.

It's up there with "someone's phoned in and said she's heard there's a hurricane on the way. Well, don't worry, there isn't". The two most iconic weather phrases in history.

The first sporting casualty of the day has already happened, with my me and my son's planned trip to watch Carlisle v Chesterfield cancelled in case we couldn't get back. Oh well, that's life (get in!). Difficult one to call because lowland Carlisle, near the Solway Firth can be a lot milder than 40 miles inland and 600ft up in Appleby. Best err on the side of caution eh?

Temperature up to -0.2º here now, but a very low dew point of -3.7º. The temperature is rising slowly but steadily and I am at 600ft.

Strangely warm tonight at a "mild" -0.8º. Meant to be going with my son to watch Carlisle tomorrow, but hoping the forecast might mean that's an unwise trip to take....not because of what the weather will be like in Carlisle, but more what it will be like back home here.

Wow - just from lots of 5sec exposures?! I'm looking forward to getting my TV85 on a tracking mount, but haven't got a CCD camera, so will have to rely on my DSLR for now. That's very impressive from what is a very portable telescope!

I'm just holding out until the ring presents itself nicely.

Postively tropical TM. -8.6º last night which, I'm annoyed to see, isn't the lowest recorded by a member, but still the coldest here since December 2010. Currently -6.1º and bright sunshine.

Went out again last night. The bright Moon made things difficult, but still got a rather pleasing shot of Leo with Mars just underneath. Notice how the trees appear to be moving yet the stars stay still? That was a 5min exposure. Also, attached my camera to the end of my telescope and took a few quick picks of the Moon. Essentially, the telescope becomes a 600mm f6 lens. The best way to get close ups of the Moon is to use a webcam, take a video, stack the individual frames, and hey presto, but this would good enough for last night, seeing as it was below -7º. Left my kit out last night too - looks a bit cold.

Dropped down to -8.6º this morning. Still -7.0º. Coldest night for over a year.

Still -5.8º here, which isn't bad for 10am.

-7.2º this morning, which is the lowest of the winter so far.

As I hobbled round the village, covering 500m in about 20 minutes, it looked like there'd been the barest dusting of snow.

Just bumping this up. Looks like no one else has ever been there either.
