so people are reporting snow in leeds, but the radar shows it as sleet, how come, im in wakefield and the radar just looks to show sleet on its way, and looking at NMM for the rest of the day it keeps this area and parts of leeds in the sleet zone, lets hope its wrong.
I'm in the city centre and its a snow / hail mix. Definitely no sleet, but its not settling.

Fine snow in Leeds. Very blustery in the wind. Looks awful outside!
Yes, snowing horizontally at the moment! Quite spectacular seeing the bands of snow in the wind.

Incoming!....

Just started snizzling here
-
Getting darker in Leeds and looking at radar something on its way.
I also noticed on the radar loop that some showers seemed to pep up over the Peak District. Will the hills actually help intensify the showers rather than draining them?
-
Now have torrential hail blowing against the building with the odd large snowflake.
Shower passed over leaving 1 inch of hail on the window ledge that was facing the wind.
-
The speed of the cold and snow appears faster than forecast. Already had 3 minor flurries in the centre of Leeds and the radar looks like more intense bursts are on the way.
Bridgewater Place roads closed again because of the wind. Feels raw outside.

Snowing in Leeds now

Looking like it will be a much colder day than forecast. Temperatures are only 2C or 3C across much of West Yorkshire.
-
Always amazes me how many weather presenters there are at BBC Look North.... although I think the weekend ones cover North West and other areas too.
Listing those I recall recently are:
Paul Hudson
Lisa Gallagher
Keeley Donovan
Kay Crewdson
Causer ????
Claire Nasir (ex GMTV luminous green bikini fitness DVD etc)
A Geordie woman
Balding older man
Is there a need for so many on the BBC payroll especially when the "local" weather is not that informative. Would be good if they produced a longer local forecast that was posted online as the slots they have on the news bulletins are too short.
-
Just look at the drop off in temps Wednesday morning, from 8c to 3c in two hours! Thats some cold front.
What's the likelihood of the cold front producing hail and thunder as it passes through?
-
paul hudson will say 'snow over the hills, with a wintry mix at low levels'
As always, doesn't make anything other than a generic prediction. I suppose a 2 minute slot on a news bulletin that covers the pennines across to the east coast resorts and everything in between it is difficult to get details.

If snow is forecast to fall at 6.30pm tomorrow I expect to see Look North broadcasting live from either the highest pub in England (Tan Shelf or Hill - can't remember!?) or the highest primary school in England near Queensbury somewhere.......
-
Thank you both. I have friends who live near Shelf and they always seem to get a lot of snow. In the more recent snowfalls they had a good 6-8 inches compared to my couple of cms so I'd expect them to be bragging again in the next few days!
-
Where in our region is the best place for snow in terms of frequency and volumes? I know camped at the top of Holme Moss is probably a good bet but which village / town are best placed for snow?
Also, does anyone have an example of historic weather patterns that mirror what is expected on Wednesday and Thursday. It would be good to gauge what is possible in such scenarios.
-
Definitely an event where the best results were for those on high ground. A couple of cms here but inches on higher ground nearby. Can't complain though - a good day weatherwise!
-
Been sunny in Adwick for the last two hours.......
Is the sunshine important for what is expected tonight/tomorrow? It's been dank all day here with the temperatures still in the mid to high teens and a coolish breeze. Will it make any difference at all or do the high temperatures further south mean that the storms will have enough ooomph to get this far north?
-
Still just 17C here with grey skies and breeze. Considering putting some trousers on rather than shorts. Can't believe places are already at 30C whilst up here we are sat in grey gloom.
-
Far far better explanation of CAPE here compared to my shambolic description.... Thanks Nick
Thank you
-
6z NMM puts high levels off CAPE further west slightly.
Still all to play for!
Novice question - with CAPE do you need it to get a storm going or to maintain or both?
-
Looks like there are a few strikes to the east of Sheffield and up towards Rotherham / Doncaster. As usual the track seems to be up the A1 / M1

Hold onto your hats..... its spitting!

The weather is just so cruel at times
Those lucky sods in the south who saw some brilliant lightning displays last night should get an even bigger/more dramatcic serving tonight, before round 3 comes up saturday afternoon/evening!!!
While us in the north are left to fight for scraps. I'm half tempted to drive down to the south and book a hotel so I don't miss out lol.
True - weather is absolute pap here at the moment. Cool breezy and grey
-
Surprisingly no storms or thunder or anything remotely of interest here over night. It's cool, grey and damp here this morning. Last night on Look North the temperatures were forecast to be 29C round these parts. This morning the local forecast has 22C as a maximum. Hopefully something will come from this weekend but this part of West Yorkshire seems to miss all the decent weather :-(
Storms always develop to the east of the M1, storms from the south always break up over Sheffield and fizzle to nothing. Weather from the west is stopped by the pennines. Overall, a dull weather area!

Very dark in Leeds centre now with large flakes of proper snow!
