  1. Its unbelievable how totally boring summer months are nowadays. Yet another Summer month passes by with a poor CET a long way off the long term average, above average rainfall and below average sunshine. This is getting very tedious now.

Wouldn't it be more tedious and boring the closer to average it was?

So if conditions are a long way off, above, or below average, the less tedious it must be.

  2. So I wasn't actually that far off the mark for the 1st to 3rd of Aug after all despite your comment a week or two ago about me being a "coldie" and producing "sweeping statements".

I certainly like cold weather but as a few people mentioned at the time personal opinions should never be factored into a forecast and I don't believe I do.

Try and judge a forecast when it's been and gone not just because it may not be what you want to hear at one particular time.

    Regards to all. Matt

    Excellent post.

Hope this attitude catches on instead of the ridiculous practise of praising a three month forecast on the very first day just because it promises the hot weather that you seek.

  3. Not yet, a nice reminder this week for the south of what month we are in, still time yet for another hot spell, we could still break the UK record yet for the hottest ever temperature still time, summer isn't finished yet

    Not yet finished?

You had considerable confusion regarding the start date going by your posts.

I think we'd got up to four last time I checked.

  4. Summer 2012 continues to elude the Lake District. Maximum temp of 17 degrees under low grey skies and drizzly rain and this is how its been since Saturday evening more of less - very miserable it has to be said.

The highest max we have recorded so far this month is 21 degrees, and only on 1 day... and going by the forecast it will be a struggle to see this figure achieved again this month. Considering 20 degrees is the average max here for July, this statistic is shockingly poor.. even in the coolest July's we can normally expect at least a couple of days nudging the 24-25 degree barrier.

    Rant alert now... be warned...

If I have to watch another bbc newsreader saying look at the blue skies I'll have to switch over... I feel like sending them a picture of lake windermere with a grey drizzly background.. and saying not the 'whole' country is experiencing summery weather - you just know if it was the other way round, they would all be moaning..... and not showing the glorious skies up here..

I used to love that Lake District weather.

Before we had our dog we used to stay in a lovely hotel in Staveley but more often than not we'd have dry sunny weather.

  5. Ouch. What's with that attitude? That really isn't any way to address anyone on here.

Just because the weather isn't doing what you would like it to doesn't mean you have to snap at those actually enjoying the sunshine...

The "attitude" that you refer to is my response to someone telling me that I have no excuse for not getting out and enjoying weather that I don't like and he does.

I'm not "snapping" at those enjoying the sunshine it's aimed at those telling me what I'm supposed to like.

    Hope that's clear.

  6. Theres no beating weather like this for the feel good factor that it brings. Most people are off work so theres no excuse for not getting out there and enjoying it.

the upcoming week might be a different story with people back at work and temperatures nudging 30c. But so what, we are overdue some hot summery weather so i say the hotter the better.

    Oh, it's compulsory now?

Why - because you like it everyone else must?

  7. I think that's pretty obvious, it was based on his personal preference. Good if it came off, I don't see what's wrong with him saying that.

That's like having a bet at the races and saying what a good one it is, just because you like the horse, before you know whether it's won or come nearer last.

  8. So the first summer forecast is out from the UK internet firms and it comes from The weather outlook and its a good one!

    Summer 2012: Warmer than average

    Overview

A fair to decent summer with the possibility of fine and very warm weather in July is expected. Rainfall amounts could vary significantly locally.

    Temperature

A slightly warmer to warmer than average summer is expected. The aggregated Central England Temperature (CET) for June, July and August is expected to be 0.5C to 1.5C above the average.

    Precipitation

A slightly drier than average summer is expected generally. Over the three month period precipitation levels are expected to between 75% to 100% of the average for much of the country, but significant variations are expected, with the possibility of heavy downpours pushing precipitation levels above average locally.

    June

    Temperature: Slightly above average

    Precipitation: Close to average

    First half

The first half of the month looks set to bring mixed weather, with all parts of the country seeing showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures over the period will probably be slightly above the seasonal average, especially in the south east where some warm sunny days are possible. Overall though these will probably be offset by cooler and wetter days with the possibility of some heavy rainfall in places, especially, but not exclusively in central and western parts.

    Second half

The second half of June is expected to see a spell of dry, fine and settled conditions developing and bringing above average temperatures. At times it could become very warm in southern and central parts with the possibility of thundery conditions. In the west and north west temperatures may be pegged back with a higher risk of unsettled and cooler periods of weather which could push further east at times.

    July

    Temperature: Above average

    Precipitation: Below average

    First half

Fine and very warm weather is expected to develop at times during the first half of the month, although early on there may well be mixed weather with some rain and lower temperatures. Fine, settled and very warm or perhaps even hot conditions are possible towards the middle of July.

    Second half

The second half of the month should bring further spells of fine weather across much of the UK with temperatures above average. Thunderstorms are increasing possible, but as ever these may be very localised. By the end of the month a transition to cooler conditions may be under way, particularly in the north and west.

    August

    Temperature: Close to average

    Precipitation: Close to average

    First half

The first half of the month is forecast to bring mixed weather early in the period with showers or longer spells of rain at times, but also some drier and brighter spells of weather when it will be quite warm.

    Second half

During the second half of August close to average weather is expected for much of the time, with settled and fine spells especially in the south interspersed with cool and changeable weather.

After other summers that would do me fine, a drier and warmer summer.

Early days, but how's this one doing so far?

  9. Yes I've had to announce it on my facebook and at work - so much excitement there is! Been looking forward to writing that status update for months!

If I can 'man up' to -9c on my bike at 0730 on a Monday morning in December then you can 'man up' to a cloudy 21c in July! Except in that I'd be the stronger! laugh.png

And if you're cold you can wear extra clothing, if I'm hot and covered in sweat I suppose i need an air-conditioned garden?

  10. Its a pity some people dont like the warmth. In the office today there was a buzz about the place when someone announced Summer was on its way. And i promptly went and got next Monday off dirol.gif

Glad I've booked this week off if the warm-up's next week.

I dug out the holes and concreted in 6 x 8' concrete fence posts and gravel boards in my garden today. If it had been any warmer, or especially any more humid, I don't think i'd have completed it.

  11. I really can't believe that when the first signs of any sort of good weather is starting to show, it gets completely played down & hijacked by those who are constantly seeking cloud and rain... we all have our preferences, but seriously, get a grip! You'll find that the other 95% of the UK would like to enjoy some summer warmth and sunshine without being constantly reminded of the prospect of less daylight (which is hardly noticeable yet).

So please, let us enjoy a bit of summer without whining, and make this post the last off-topic post in the thread, and keep it to the targeted subject? This being SUMMER (heat & warmth)

    Rant over.

High pressure is ridging in from the South tomorrow giving southern areas a little less shower activity, although there are still fronts and whatnot crossing from the west, so not looking too good just yet.

Afterwards there's a good trend for a taste of summer, at least for a time as the jet stream goes on holiday to the north, or north of the UK for a while, a westerly regime is looking likely, and with it being over the Atlantic, there's likely to be a lot of cloud trapped in the high for a time, although there should be some sunshine at least, more so in the SE where the highest temperatures will likely be. Signs that low pressure may make a return in FI, but with the jet still up north, it won't take much for the Azores High to make it's return to settle things down again.

A reliable data source for your 95% would help to verify your claim and the reduction in daylight was enthused for late summer, not just yet.

  12. Not to start an argument (and I am by no means a GW believer), but the term Global means the whole Earth, not just the United Kingdom.

People forget about all the other summer months back in the early 00s. They were not all fantastic. I remember people saying we would never get a winter month below 2c ever again during this time........guess what it happened and just as that happened, we will get a summer month above 18c again.

Maybe the UEA experts should have addressed the whole Earth, and not just threatened the UK with mediterranean summers?

  13. "While we didn't find evidence that climate change has affected the odds of all the extreme weather events we looked at, we did see that some events were significantly more likely. Overall we're seeing that human influence is having a marked impact on some types of extreme weather."

    In other words:

"Despite desperate searching we just couldn't see what we wanted to see but managed to convince ourselves that it's definitely in there somewhere.

Can we have a much bigger research grant please?"
