1. Not sure on directions but the Heavier stuff out in Cardigan bay or whatever seems to be heading more south than South East, then heading more SSE when it comes on to land. You may get lucky.

    I'll keep everything crossed. :cold:

bbc weather just said there may be a few showers around in south wales tonight.

If these showers were in the South East of England there'd be bedlum and headlines on every news channel.

Tell me about it. And if the south east had had the cold and snow that Scotland have recently endured it would be flamin' Armageddon.

  2. Looks like we could see some showers later and overnight, hopfully of snow! Temps shot up thismorning, reached 6.5C at 10:45am, now gone back down to 5.3c and seems to be falling slowly. Fingers crossed for those showers. Is there any chance of seeing anything tomorrow night? or tuesday? as netweather seems to give us snowshowers tonight/tomoz morning, tomoz night/sunday morning, monday and tuesday. I hope to see something in the next few days then if they are right! wind seems to be coming from the W/NW.

I'm surprised that you got as high as 6.5C.

Here near Carmarthen I'm currently on my 'highest' of -2C :cold:

  3. Bloody hell, how did my post become so mangled? Oh well, here's the short version:

I remember that 1978 blizzard VERY well as I lived near Bristol at the time. There's certainly the 'potential' for that to happen again given the current setup, I live in hope. :)

BTW, can you (or someone) remind me of the link to that site with those old synoptics please? I had it book-marked but can't find it any longer. Thanks.

  4.
Steady rain here.

Already heard a number of people asking this morning where the snow that was forecast is.

Of more concern is also hearing from the same people what I was fearing last night....hearing comments such as "those warnings dished out are a sack of ****" "I'll take no notice next time" etc etc
With the met office it's a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" - what doesn't help are newspapers screaming sensational headlines such as "major freeze-up on the way, -20C" etc

But anyhow, back to the weather in Wales - here the temp is crawling up VERY slowly, now at 2.3C (was 1.9C at 9am) and it's piddling down. Northwards moving front is slowing, so should soon stall and return southwards, MAYBE with some snow on the back edge. We'll see.

  5.
Things are going to steadily turn colder and the front is going to stall for hours,

thats why the warnings out,

where the front stalls and is snow, there could be many hours of snow.
Indeed. The Low becomes reasonably static to the south of Ireland with the centre and assorted fronts slowly meandering around, so I can see why the Met office are putting out warnings. Due to the borderline temps some will be lucky and get a good dump of snow, while others will see wet snow, sleet or rain. Some may even stay dry.

The Low eventually moves out of the way on Thursday. In theory. :)

  6.
In defence of the METO I've just driven through Gilfach, as stated the BIGGEST flakes I have seen in my life. And I've been skiing loads. Total whiteout and driving conditions reduced in moments. In central Pencoed rain, but just 1 mile north and it's two degrees colder and white.

Large flakes = wet and sticky snow, each large flake really being a number of smaller flakes stuck together.

  7.
Proper snow here but its not heavy enough and its not cold enough to stick. It could snow until next year and it still wont stick, it may aswell be raining. Completely useless.

6-12 inches LOL.

Best thing to do in such conditions is to look up, not down - far nicer to see snowflakes falling rather than look at the wet ground. :)

  8. We have heavy snow here in Barry, can't see it settling though......ground is way to wet.

Snow will settle on wet ground if it's cold enough, ie very close to freezing or below.

And before anyone tries to tell you that heavy snow will settle on wet ground ..... again, same rule applies. Heavy snow will NOT settle if the temp is too far above freezing. Many times I've seen real heavy snow at a temp of 2, 3 or 4C and it simply won't settle. The temp is the key along with the Dew Point.
