  1. got some fairly gusty winds here at the moment accompinied with hail
  2. STS-133 launched the other day from the KSC in Florida , and is now chasing the ISS around the globe preparing for docking at 7.16pm UK Time this evening. Thanks to the stations current orbital inclination , there are many viewing oppurtunites in the next few days and into march . Of particular intrest are tonights 2 passes over the UK , times for these can be found at http://www.heavens-above.com/ (register for free). For my location the ISS is passing over at 6.36pm and 8.11pm , with the 1st pass having the shuttle very close but behind the station , as docking is occuring les than 45 mins after. So if your skies are clear tonight , go out and take a look. The ISS will be unmissible with the shuttle being the fainter dot behind it , with a slight orange hue. Enjoy the Show and good luck to the crew of STS-133 Live NASA TV coverage of the docking at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
  3. http://www.spacew.com/ , possible mid latitude aurora's at the moment , shame it's not night time!. KP currently at 5 (storm)
  4. Is the KP-Index expected to rise later? , it's at KP 1 just now according to spaceweather.com
  5. Mid Latitude's still at 30% , not great but if your north of newcastle i'd keep your eyes peeled just incase. http://www.spacew.com/ , if the mid latitude light goes amber , then there's a good chance you'll see the aurora , red and it's almost certain

  13. It's probably one of two things. 1. A meteor as Rocky Balboa said. The Quadrantids meteor shower does peak soon , at a rate of 100-120 an hour , so could have been an early one or 2. A piece of satellite debris burning up in the atmosphere. This happens quite a lot , as stuff like screws and bolts from the satellites eventually fall back to earth. Hope this helps

  19. sound like sporadics to me. There rate usually tends to pick up in the early hours before sunrise , i think you can see between 8 and 10 any night and they can occur in any part of the sky. Interesting piece of info for everyone , the geminids parent object isnt a comet as is the case with many meteor showers. It's infact an asteroid (3200 Phaethon) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3200_Phaethon
  20. not seen any yet but i'll keep my eyes peeled Also , the moon shouldnt pose any problems this year , it's at 41% phase atm so it'll set well before midnight in the next few days. So after midnight you should see loads. If anyone's out viewing the geminids , also take a peek at Jupiter (sets around midnight , it'll be in the southern sky) and Venus (in the morning sky , rises 4 hours before sunrise)
