orange rolling on the downs remember that ? I do miss the downs in winter but don't miss the town lol
LOL
Never been there for orange rolling, do miss there but St Albans is a bugger to get round these days, still have family there so often in LC, SA, BW and El's (mainly for a meal out)
Went sledging there as a kid in the snow (early 70's), may be my being a kid at the time, but it seemed to be the longest and fastest sledge run I ever did.

For all its faults the GFS will never shy away from a shortwave debacle. The slightest whiff and it's on it like a tramp on chips.
CHIPS!
Well the cold looks likely to become more and more embedded looking at the current and recent model output.

If you can get up there
Not settling at all at the mo, not really expecting it to either...well it can once I'm back in St. Albans
the downs look lovely after a snow fall
Ahh, used to go there when I was a Kid, fantastic place.
Sometimes I think it a shame we moved from LC

Yes without some exceptionally heavy snowfall I wouldn't expect much accumulation as surface temps remain above 0c, however we could see issues with visibility through rush hour
SK
Done my driving for today, it is the ice in the dark tomorrow morning at silly am that i'm more concerned with.
BTW Kris, how is the DJ business going? not seen you for a few years now.

Snowing in Rushden (has been for an hour now), not settled though.

I agree Iceni. What is an expert mathematician supposed to look like: Clark Kent?
Stereotype would be male, old, socially awkward
- my A level Maths teacher in school wore tight black skirts, figure hugging white blouses and had a body that went well with the outfits. She was a boffin from Cambridge...
Cant for the life of me work out why I chose Maths over other options at that time of my life...
you liked her figures?
good lad

Well, whilst it looks like the west is "back in there" for now, we all know that what the models predict and what we get can often be very different.
What we want/expect and what mother nature delivers can catch us by suprise.
For now it does indeed look like (using current GFS) that we are entering a western influence with our weather, expecting temps here to remain + from this weekend for the forseeable, but even so avg temps for this time of year are hardly tropical.

Does no one else on here pay the gas bill. I am happy with a winter that has one or 2 cold snaps and at least one good covering of snow - dry, bone-chilling cold doesn't do it for me.
Before Friday are we looking for any unexpected events, obviously there are the showers in the far east but sometimes previously when there has been cold unexpected snowfall events have materialised with only 12 hours notice - anything on the horizon?
With you bro, like it to look at but the heating bill is comes with is my killer.
Roll on

Do the dance anyway, give them something to worry about.Looks like an Icy grabber getting ready to pick up the UK and drop us in the Arctic.
Anyway, seems to be a good run for the reliable with cold not leaving us anytime soon. However, I would like to see model agreement including the high resolution ones before I start worrying my work colleagues with a childish dance in the office.
In the office I always get asked about stuff like this.
on a higher note, the cold does appear to be more longer resident now.

That block bounces back the Atlantic at t126.
And I would say the S, S/W and W would see some significant wintry precip in all that before it moves across the UK. Prime area does look to be W Midlands for a snowfest IMHO (but it is just a HO)

-2oc here in the shed

Woke up to a light dusting from overnight when I ventured out in the car to work at 06:00 this morning, must have melted a bit too as it was on the screen cover and that was covered in ice.
-
Shouldn't it be called the POM, then...?
I would expect that from a Sheila

JUst been out to the bin and a super light flurry. Not much I will agree, but *some* all the same.Whereabouts? Clear as a whistle here!
Up by the by pass.
-
Just a tad, my nan from my "birth" ground is on holiday, so I have lost my "ear on the ground" there for now. (cold ear I agree)A bit different here!
-
Light snow here too

My normal correspondant in the N.London Herts area is currently in Perth W.A.
and is reporting temps in the mid 30's
-
Also in Rushden and we got a decent fall, much of it fell to the thaw, now freezing I suspect (not been out, too cold)
-
No charts (Sorry), but short term is looking cold overall, but as many have said the tail end of the week is looking "combative" regards the East West influence, anyone know the outcome? doubt it at even this short time frame.
Going forward my gut hunch is the block will hold for the north and east, but the south and west may not, but hey the potential on that forecast front Friday does hold some potential.
Guess we will all have to wait till we get model agreement and some closer model data.
good fun what!

Surely with all those blues the air will be bitter cold ??
That is not a temp chart, it is a thickness chart, and the SLP lines show it dragging in air from the SW ish area.
-
Snowing here in East Northants (lightly I must add)
-

YesLatest look at the big picture and its a upgrade for the 3 to 6 day snowfall forecast
Turkey shows how it's done, Italy improves and the ice makes a big jump towards iceland and wants to make a bridge to Japan.
Looking for upgrades for Spain Ireland Norway western France and Italy .....not to worried about the UK! Apart from that its one of the great years for snow covering of the northern hemisphere.
that Ice is very close to northern Japan now, the people in Monbetsu could soon walk to the north pole at this rate!
