  1. well i've just been out to get my supplies. I've spent my whole months budget on food as Andymusic said February 6th is going to be the big day for snow. I've told work i won't be coming in. I hope the £700 i have spent today won't be wasted.

Afterall Andy is going to work for the met office and knows EVERYTHING about the weather.

    cheers Andy

I think slammer must have slammed a few strong beers down as he is being very brave again on here trying to upset people. nearly every post is aimed at someone.
  2. snow next week anyone?

Better than this bloody rain, i cant stand the rain. and what we are having again now is way over the top ha ha, the roads are terrible out there and drains cant take the amount of water and guess what? yes much more tonight. but its going to be sunny tommor so that's good. I saw the weather on tv and they said the weekend could be colder but didn't say anything about snow, bit early yet anyway for them to say about snow. DRY WEATHER WITH LOTS OF SUN PLEASE.
  3. Think we're gonna get more than one event - snows coming back - and I think it's gonna come back even stronger than before - watch out - this could be amazingly brutal - really worrying! - hope I'm wrong!

Andy I done a bit of reading of late and quite a lot of people think as we enter feb the chances of snow in southern Britain become less and less as the days go on, but Scotland still good for snow even into March. I know we have had bad weather in feb and it has lasted. I think 1978 was feb (must have been) old 5 nations Wales v Scotland game it started on. and that blizzard lasted on the ground. so why have I been reading that feb isn't so good for snow and cold? I know the nights are getting lighter but cold is cold and if it comes in then winter is still here. that's all I really hope is we have a nice summer as driving around when its raining its clear there is no more room in the ground for this rain and we need some dry weather or there will be much more flooding.
  4. sounds like today and tommor is going to be very wet, just down the road from me had flooding on sat night and just saw Pontypridd on the news it looked very bad. I think others areas could be the same today as the grounds are full and with all rain forecast not looking good. can you imagine if one of these storms of rain had come in as snow we would be stuck for weeks, I think we was quite lucky that didn't happen. that's what must have happened back in 82 when we saw extreme amounts of snow. am I correct in thinking that when the cold is over us that these storms are held out in the atlantic and the chances of these making it over to us are slim? Andy I was hoping for a bit longer for the snow to come back but I think I would rather the snow come now than flooding and at this rate some are going to have flooding over the next few days

  5. when that crazy shower hit today we was by sarn park and my wife said its as if someone is throwing buckets of water and hail over the car,and the wind went mad or a few mins. looking out over Ireland some of them showers look very nasty. we finally got over the bwlch today and its open over to gwynfi as well, even after all this very very heavy rain the snow patches up there are very deep, where the snow had drifted there are patches that are still about 5 ft thick. I didn't have my camera today to take some pics.

  6. In this thread over the past couple of weeks, there are those who back up their forecasts with charts and analysis, To me yourself, Jamie and MikeCarroll (I 'd like to think, my analysis has been at least OK) who been doing this and have provided some detailed forecasts, which have not been that far off the mark. Doesn't mean we have always got it right, indeed last Tuesday/ Wednesday was a nightmare to forecast. But by being objective, we have tried to steer a middle course that has hopefully provided a reasonable estimate to the forecast weather.

Ramping of any kind tends not to provide an accurate reflection of weather forecasting, indeed some people in the MOD thread who were thought of as gods are new finding their influence/reputation damaged, as if you consistently fail to get forecasts right then reputation is lost.

I admit I don't have a clue and always admit to that but i am good at guessing ha ha. I think getting the weather correct is very difficult when it comes to snow as temp height wind and lots of other things come into play. I have noticed after being on here for a long time now that being in this country makes it harder to be accurate than many other countries. im happy we had our snow and Wales done well out of it, its the first real snow since we moved up here and I cant get over how bad the snow is up here compared to even 500 meters away down a steep hill. this is norm a good thread and friendly place and long may it continue. some good guys and gals on here to help people like myself who don't really understand that much.
  7. very heavy rain here now as well,i hope it clears the bwlch to Gwynfi as that was a long drive for what norm takes 12 mins over the mountain ha ha. so whats next on the weather front? dry cold/ wet windy/ or maybe in near future snow and ice? whats your guess guys for feb? I will go with wet and windy for about 4 days then dry ish, then more rain and then back into cold and then towards last week of feb a huge snow storm to make everyone happy again lol. all guess work but will it pan out,who is next to have a guess?

  8. Just got back from bridgend and sleety rain down there with a few flakes mixed in,ogmore sleet and wet snow, nantymoel wet snow half way up hill to me and the snow get dry and then in cwm and guess what its sticking on cars and roads, doing my head in now but looking at radar should stop soon thanks god, as spoke last night height makes such a huge difference, temp in car down bridgend was 3.5 down ogmore 2 up here 0.5. come on snow go away for a week or so ha ha.

just got up and looked and its the very very fine stuff now coming down and blowing off the roof of house in front but I think and hope this is the last for now.

  9. Yes, know that area well. Use the R. Ogmore for A Level field study and always start up on the Bwlch. Great views both sides and the most Southerly glacial corrie in the UK there North facing into Cwmparc valley. Must be like the last ice age up there now too!

yes it is very bad (or good) up here right now, i didnt know until last week that the bwlch road is the highest road in wales, i know beacons are higher but the road itself is higher than beacons. its still closed up there, we went up in 4x4 after last fri snow and took some pics and put them on here, but my mate went up yest and said he could get only a tiny way up in his 4x4 as all the snow we had since last fri has really piled it up there.he said on the top there are huge drifts going from one side of the road to the other and filled in the void and that void is big very big, im hoping they open it tommor as my son is a boxer for gwynfi and it only takes 12 mins from here but to go around will take a hr.
  10. Thats some view from your landing!

that one of the reasons we bought the house Tony it is stunning in winter and summer, nothing better than sitting out the garden in summer with a ice cold ale sitting against my shed and just looking up the mountain, and i sometimes do the same in winter with a cup of tea but dont stay out to long as its very cold up here with the wind, thats why i always ask how windy its going to get during storms as up here u need to add to the gusts. we love it up here peace and quite and views to die for (well not quite)ha ha
  11. Remarkable difference in snow depths with altitude here. Went to investigate Machen Mountain earlier with a Garmin.

    • Valley (70m asl) 1-2 inches remaining in most places away from griited surfaces
    • 100m - 3 inches
    • 200m - 6 inches
    • 300m - a level foot with upto 4 foot drifts! Totally different world up there!

The slight thaw that came in on Tuesday afternoon really affected the amount of snow that settled that night below 150m with that front from the West Country. More at 300m+ than 2010.

you are correct about the height, where I live down in the valley there is a few inches or was, just down the road from me is nantymoel and they had good amount of snow, but up with me we had a lot more with quite big drifts, but right behind my house is the bwlch mountain the one that is still not open due to snow, you want to see it up there 600 m asl huge drifts. but even just 4 min walk behind house there are drifts up to my sons chest and he is 5ft 1 inch and some looked even bigger.it is the wind that has caused it to be deep up here as we are on the mountain and always seem to be windy even on calm days we have a breeze ha ha. been good but be nice to have some warm dry days for a little while.
  12. i just saw forecast on tv and it shows rain coming in on fri,and turns to snow for a short while in the far east of wales, then moves very quickly to rain and then the snow moves to far east of England and it looks from what i just seen they could have very very heavy snow for quite a few hrs and even that far east will turn to rain with mild temps for sat and sunday. well it has been nice to see some snow but would like to see some dry sunny days now for a while and then a 82 style blizzard in feb and then a long hot sunny summer to dry out this ground, and make us all smile.(i blooming wish)

  13. i'm afraid that is very very sad - this is partly to do with the met offices timidness in giving out warnings - they need a new marketing dept to make sure the message is heard loud and clear that this brutal sort of weather is here or is gonna be here. plus, the stupid people who think they can continue on in the same way that they always have without thought for any one else - very selfish - STAY OUT OF YOUR CARS FOLKS - IT'S NOT CLEVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR VEHICLE AND KILL A PEDESTRIAN IS IT - SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STAY OUT OF YOUR CARS IF YOU CAN'T COPE WITH THE CONDITIONS - BETTER STILL JUST STAY OUT OF YOUR CARSSSSSSSSSSSS! - POOR LITTLE GIRL - I FEEL FOR HER!mad.gif

its not true I just been told Andy (thank god) but some very sick people about who started this awful rumour.
  14. the snow that came today has caused terrible problems around the bridgend area, I have friends who said it took them 2 hrs to get home and norm takes 20 mins, i have also seen quite a few car slide backwards on the hill upto me, and had to leave their cars, quite a few crashes due to sheet ice around sarn park area and apparently the little girl incident was not true some sick people about making up things like that.

  15. Mild weather coming in over the weekend is 99.9% certain I'm afraid - anyone saying that it will stay as it is now is just hopecasting (or perhaps living in a parallel universe). :)

thanks for that a few in model thread are saying the models are starting to shift back but as you say some hold on to whats not there,i myself would rather have some nice dry cold weather once this snow clears and then after a break have one big blast nice large amount of snow for kids then clear and have a very very very long hot sunny summer ha ha,(now im in that dream land lol)
