  1. Just went out for a walk with my lassie..as the storm moved away it seemed to intensify..we headed towards the top of a hill where we would get a good view.

Walking up....right in front of us...MASSIVE CG with ear shattering thunder 3 seconds after it..was pretty scary TBH being so close.

We got to the top of the hill but couldnt see any more lightning..it was worth it though just to see that strike. :)

  2. A thunderstorm is just brushing past here (Hamilton), I could hear faint rumbles of thunder when I went out to the car. Sky looks very dark as well to the west.

Just had that one here Ross...although not a direct hit it was close enough..got 4 rumbles and 3 good flashes of lightning from it..one directly above my house with the explosion of thunder straight after it.

    Moved away now though. :(

  3. Rain absolutely stoating down here to use a good old scottish term. Clouds and radar looked rather onimous before it arrived

Must be the shower thats just passed through here..big massive rain drops..very ocassional hail mixed in..its moved away towards the Glasgow area now.

Think it was slightly electrical before it arrived here then kinda died down just as it got here...typical really.

  4. The thunder at 1 or 2 points was wall shattering. Really could feel it vibrate against the wall. Nod bad little storm it was at all

Nice one guys..missed it by a matter of a few miles..just my luck really..

My brother phoned me as he got off the train at Wishaw and said he could see the cell dropping CG's every minute or so..just had to come a wee bit further SW and i woulda got it.

  5. A few hundred miles from the continent ?? Down here on the South Coast I can see the French coast on a clear day, a distance of about 35 miles. The distance to the continent from Dover is even less, approximately 25 miles. Not sure where you get the 'few hundred miles' from, unless you mean from Scotland to the continent.

Yeah sorry lol..i did mean here (Glasgow) to the continent and not the 30 odd miles from Dover-Calais.

  6. Where for???? France!!!

Lol..true..ye know its amazing so it is there is only a few hundred miles that seperate the UK from the Continent and yet there it seems to be the perfect breeding ground for storms.

We havent had a storm here since May 2006 yet we were in Paris last year for a week and seen 6 seperate storms..4 in the one day..where's the justice in that...

  7. High pressure often prevents the development of convection, by suppressing air which may be trying to rise. Nevertheless, under certain circumstances, convection can initiate, especially if conditions creating forcing/lift is stronger than the suppression by the High. A good example of this is orographic lift...air forced to rise up mountains/hills. Another good example is convergence zones, particularly sea breeze convergence - i.e the breeze blowing inland from the sea collides with prevailing winds from another direction. We mustn't also forget (as we tend to do) weather fronts are associated with Highs as well as Low pressure systems.

It is worth pointing out that the thunderstorms which hit the SE on Thursday last week developed under increasing atmospheric pressure, as a ridge built in across southern England.

However, directly approaching your question, Northern Scotland will not be under the influence of rising pressure this afternoon - the High is close, but the synoptics show pressure briefly falling as a developing Low pressure system moves through N Scotland later today. Furthermore, based on the GFS charts showing wind direction, a convergence zone will setup later today as the low pressure system brushes past, introducing stronger westerly winds, colliding with the more southerly winds around the High pressure system in the N Sea.

Thanks for that explanation Harry..like i says im picking up bits and pieces as i go along..every little helps. :)

  8. I notice Estofex have a wee circle right over central Scotland today and Net-Weather have given us a 51% chance of a storm in the afternoon.

But surely with pressure so high and not a cloud in the sky hardly this seems unlikely ? or do they know something i dont know as im just a pure amateur just learning as i go along from the guys on here.

  9. what a let down here :wallbash:

Same here Stu..im thinking this is one of the worst places to be for storms (5 years ago we had our last one) 3 days of a 'plume' and a day of widespread thunderstorms..and we still cant catch a single rumble.

Not that im greetin or nothin..well spose i am a wee bit..but it just seems let down after let down here..

Our next 'chance' is Thursday and Friday according to BBC Weather..we shall see...

  10. Absolute tonne of sferics over NW England/S Scotland on the netweather detector. Looking good , hoping to have a good light show here soon and some heavy rain! :drinks:

My mate just texted me .. was out the back having a ciggie..swears he seen lightning..i went out to check it out couldnt see anything but it does feel very still and 'thundery'

  11. Which detector? I'm back in Killie today and don't have my favourites on this computer. Those small cells look to be heading this way.

Strikes may be from the very intense downpour just moving onshore to the west of Dumfries? Or they could be for the cells to the NW of Dumfries which are heading approximately this direction :D

http://www.meteorologica.info/lightning/lightning.jpg << This one Ross..its probably not that accurate..but its the one i always use..

  12. Plume setup's in early May are fantastic for us (May 2006 is a perfect example) As long as it's ok for the 13th to the 15th ie. no storms when I go down south then it can storm all it wants up to then

Indeed..who could forget that one,one of the best displays of lightning ive ever seen in my life..heres hoping for a similar set up soon..surely 5 years without a decent storm we are due something ?

  13. well good luck but i dont think you will see anything :drinks:

Yes..i suspect you are spot on nothing happening AGAIN...a few scattered cumulus and a bit of cirrus nothing of any major significance..just dosent 'feel thundery' either.

However i may be pleasently surprised later on although i doubt it..cant believe yesterdays storms were so near..yet so far.

How pants has this summer been for storms..not 1 single rumble here..yet i went over to France for a week and seen 4 storms (3 within about 2 hours of each other).

    Moan over lol.
