  1. An Emirates flight flying over Goa averted tragedy on Sunday, and landed safely in Kochi.

The Boeing 777 - flying from Dubai to Kochi with 350 passengers on board - dropped from a height of 20,000 to 1,500 feet :o , possibly due to turbulence caused by rains in the Goa-Kerala region.

Miraculously, the pilot was able to regain control before impact - after dropping 18,500 feet.

  2. Understood T.M.

Therefore, I'd be interested in the amount of CO2 and SO2 emitted from this volcano in comparison to 10 years worth of aircraft emissions. Groups such as Plane Stupid would do well to realise that aircraft emissions are something so miniscule in the grand scale of things. I fail to see their problem, actually.

Aircraft emissions are tiny compared to any volcanic blast.

  3. While as good all passenger planes were grounded over much of Europe, I assume the skies were almost completely clear of contrails almost Europe-wide.

A plus side of the enforced ban were the pure blue skies the weekend before last.

Surely a lack of contrails followed by a sudden appearance of them this week has had a tamporary but profound effect on the weather and general climate?

The difference over Bristol from clear skies once the planes started flying again was very marked!

Surely a large amount of volcanic ash had a temporary effect on the climate?!

I haven't seen proof, indeed a peer-reviewed piece on contrails v climate change. Anyone?

  4. Currently all HIAL airports north of Inverness will be closed until tomorrow morning (22.04.10) including Wick, Kirkwall, Stornoway and Sumburgh due to a volcanic ash cloud.

Pretty tough on the islanders. Still they have ferries going ok.

I think it was AFT who asked why can't they fly in volcanic ash, but can sand plumes. Here's a fair explanation: http://www.volvoaero.com/volvoaero/global/en-gb/newsmedia/press_releases/actual/Pages/Default.aspx

  5. Mr Cynical hat on.

14 BA jets were longhaul. They were all arriving or near UK airspace within an hour or two of each other. Indeed, 5 or 6 of them were holding out west until pressure was put on the CAA/NATS by BA ??? Is this possible?

  6. As much as I hate politics, particularly Labour or Tories, she does have a point!

Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said: "Labour must immediately commit to a full inquiry into this fiasco, which has caused so much travel misery and billions of pounds of economic damage.

"Six days into the crisis, we're suddenly told that there are actually levels of ash which are compatible with safe flying. The question angry passengers and airlines are already asking is why the government hadn't worked this out before the crisis occurred."
