Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Tuesday April 20, 2300
NATS welcomes new CAA guidance and reopens airspace
We are delighted to report that most restrictions on UK airspace began to be lifted at 2134 (local time) this evening, following new guidance from the UK’s safety regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority on restrictions to UK airspace as a result of the volcanic eruption.
Air traffic control services have resumed in the UK with the exception of an area over the north west of Scotland which continues to be affected by a dense concentration of volcanic ash. Based on current information this situation is not expected to change overnight. The situation continues to be dynamic as a result of changing weather conditions and the prediction of dense areas of volcanic ash. NATS will continue to monitor the latest Met Office and VAAC information and the CAA’s updates on the availability of UK airspace.
This brings to an end a period of disruption and uncertainty for air passengers. Our operation is fully staffed and already responding to the backlog of flights entering UK airspace. We will be working with the airlines and airports to resume normal operations as soon as possible.
Due to the scale of the disruption, it will take some time for flights to resume normal operations and passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information about flights.
There are no further operational changes expected overnight and on this basis our next update will be at 0900 (local time) on 21 April.

You won't be able to sue anyone. Similar to the point that CAA/NATS won't be able to sue BA..

Its being circulated around aircraft operators this evening. If you're aware of the PIREP reporting system, then one was filed after landing at Oostend and is now subject to an engineering investigation of the aircraft involved to see exactly what damage was caused.
Thanks for the reply. I waited until you did ;-)
Am aware of Pilot Reports, not that well though, but enough to know if it's being circulated around ops tonight, I'd be interested to see/hear what happens with this.

Having just come out of a teleconference between airlines/operators/ATC I can pretty much say that the 2200 reopening time doesn't appear to be an official time that the industry is working towards. The official line is that the next airspace review will be made at 0000z (0100 local). I have also been made aware than a World Airlines (MD11 aircraft) cargo flight from Maastricht to Oostend late this afternoon reported ash damage upon landing but further investigation is taking place with them at the moment.
Why, then, isn't this being made public knowledge?

Pity the poor sods who got diverted and landed minutes before the latest news!

BA074 from Lagos to Heathrow, circling over Le Harve, just waiting..
-
Why can't they land at EDI or GLA - both are open and can accomadate longhaul flights, Prestwick too?
-
A flight just landed at Newcastle after coming from Canada about half hour ago, BBC news channel showed it. It wasn't BA though.
Might have been the Air Transat due to land Gatwick . That got diverted a few hours when over the ocean and told to land at Newcastle.

Mumbai to Heathrow landed Brussels
-
China flight landed in Amsterdam
-
A logistical nightmare for ATC having to watch these flights hold.
-
The last thing these passengers want is to hold. Nightmare.
-
BA274 from San Francisco has enough fuel to hold for the next 2 hours, then it will have to divert to Shannon if unable land Heathrow.
-
The Lufthansa flight heading west away from all these BA flights must be chuckling at the burocracy of it all now.
-
Pretty shambolic situation when you look at the radar - all these planes going round in circles unknown what to do next as they await "the powers that be" next judgement.

The Las Vegas - Heathrow flight has been circling over Northern Ireland for a bit now - wtf? Wondering what to do next.....sheez

Barcelona, Madrid and Nice seemingly the preferred choice of airports for the BA longhaul's (diverts)
Not sure if already posted: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2010/pr20100420.html

Think Scotland will take some Mondy.
That was the initial plan - we'll see later. The arrivals at EDI show no transatlantic arrivals - yet!
-
I think I would. I enjoy flying. There has been no recorded incidents the last 48 hours from the likes of Air France, Lufthansa, KLM et al.
-
Currently 14 BA longhaul flights due for arrivals. All supposed to be for Heathrow or gatwick, which is unlikely. Mention of them going to Madrid or Barcelona now which is crazy when we just had the schoolboy Milliband on Sky saying all foreigners to make their way to northern European ports. http://flightaware.com/live/fleet/BAW

It would be nice if Katla blows. It should help reduce the amount of un-neccessary wastage of fossil-fuels in Europe.

So why did KLM, Lufthansa et al aim thier woes at London VACC (MetO) when in actual fact Toulouse VACC covers their countries?
Explains why yesterday the Meto (who I am no great fan of) quite rightly pointed out that they are the Northern European VACC outlet for aviation, not entire Europe.
Had anyone heard of VACC Toulouse btw?
