  1. All over here, rain showers and temp now a positively tropical 2c! Can see the snow line shifting up the hill opposite. Many areas defrosting for first time in a week. Amazing how easily the cold is shifted. I think the Met Office warning for tomorrow is probably redundant, unless it's changed to one for a flood!
  2. A couple of nights of - 12 has seen the River Wye freeze over in places. Not seen that since 2010. The hoar frost has coated the trees and vegetation in thick coat of white, quite magical. This has been a notable cold spell, if not especially snowy. We might see a few flurries before the milder air arrives Sunday, although there is already a sign of a change with high cloud coming in from the west now.
  3. Coldest I can remember for a long time. Minimal snow cover where we are too. Weather Underground used to have a station up towards Saint Harmon / Bwlchysarnau, but seems its not reporting anymore - suspect it would be couple of degrees lower still out that way.
  4. It was already - 9c in Saint Harmon at 19:30, its - 8.5c in Rhayader town now. Likely coldest night for a number of years tonight, will be below -10c easily around here, especially where there is snow cover. Fabulous night, the star scapes were incredible over the hills, with a shooting star visible from the current meteor shower. Make the most of it, this is what winters should be like!
  5. Well what a difference a few miles makes. In town freezing fog and we are not getting above - 4 today. . A few miles north, with a bit of elevation, the fog cleared to reveal a winter wonderland. Any more snow likely for Mid-Wales?
  6. Everything has refrozen with wind direction switching back to the north and we have a slight covering of snow again, but precipitation has now moved south! Someone is going to get lucky tonight but not sure it will be here!
  7. Fun and games are above 1000ft asl tonight. A44 Llangurig to Aberystwyth Road reportedly only just passable. Elan Valley just 5 miles away has plenty of snow. The westerly wind has pushed showers further inland, but has unfortunately raised temperatures to make things far more marginal for settling snow. Shame, as plenty of precipitation here tonight. Temp has dropped down to freezing now, so still staying positive.
  8. Sleet turned to snow in last hour, but hasn't settled despite temperature being only just above freezing. A few miles from here whiteout conditions on higher routes.
  9. Turned back to sleet this afternoon, this morning's deposits mainly melted. Temperature needs to drop again, which it will do later.
  10. Some snow finally arrived in Rhayader today, just a sprinkling. - 6 on the thermometer, fraction milder than yesterday's - 7! It is lovely out there though, nice and crisp.
  11. Temp dropped to 3c here, heavy grauple and hail. Frequent strong gusts. Would not want to be out in this, but don't think we have had worst of winds here (yet).
  12. It is certainly a beautiful place to live and a very friendly community, however, the Elan Valley is far busier than it was when we first moved to the area a decade ago. Fortunately there are other places that are just as wonderful nearby that are more off the beaten track. The attached taken at 4pm this afternoon in hills above Rhayader at Bwlchysarnau (1400ft).
  13. Well it's snowed for a few hours in Rhayader, few cms of soft powder. At least the cold snap has produced a bit of the white stuff, was starting to think we would miss out. River Wye got a few ice patches on it, temp not been above freezing since Wednesday. Apologies for the quotation, don't seem to be able get rid of it!
  14. Temp risen in Rhayader and all melted, but still coming down well - shame. Hills look good though.
  15. Took its time, but coming down well in Rhayader, @200m. Temp 0.3c, so starting to white over quite rapidly.
  16. -9.3 recorded on the garden weather station last night, coldest night for several winters. Couple of inches of lying snow certainly helped!
