  1. I don't think the russian high wants to be our friend, I can only see it being pushed further away once the jet fires up and we get into a fluid west to east type pattern. It probably means we are going to have to pin our hopes on a mid atlantic ridge and maybe a northerly but northerlies are rubbish unless they can be sustained, topplers are a waste of time. The best chance we have IMO is for a southerly tracking jet and hope we can tap into some more cold air next week because it will soon be turning a bit milder, wet and windy for all areas by the weekend onwards.

Topplers may be a waste for you, but they can be fantastic here. Bring it on.

Also looking to get my life back now after some painful model watching. Not looking good for the beast, so will be looking to the North west for some pressure rises.

  2. Not going to get up, yet, but still pretty wet out there and the station on top the hill is now reporting 0.7c, so has dropped 1.2c since its max sometime after midnight. Interesting.

Just looked out the window and no real signs of sleetiness but still a snow cover about 80/90%, but looking a bit thin now.

Just checked and the station is now at 0.5 and reporting snowfall, very interesting. It's about 90m higher than here.

  3. Just back from a few hours in Driffield. Wet snow when I left and heavy rain in Driffield, but coming back it's just about still wet snow on the highest part of the road at 122m, so not much more elevation will have snow. Sleet in the village at 70m, temp 1.4 now and 4.8mm from this so far.

Make that 5.1mm. Just noticed that the temp had gone up to 1.5 and now back to 1.3. Could be interesting if that continues.

  4. Brilliant!! smile.png Saves trawling through loads of posts to find more relevant ones.

Temp is now 0.9C with dew point of -3.6C.

Odd flake blowing about in the increasing wind.

still reckon we may get an hour or two's snow before turning to rain.

Here's my pic i posted earlier showing current conditions here in Scarborough looking towards the Wolds.

Even if today is a non event we can take some comfort in the output the models are churning out for next week. It looks a little marginal at times here on the coast but smaller details like that not worth too much worry till closer the time!

So is that East Ayton you're at, almost looking towards Staxton? 0.7 here now, DP -2. Light patch of blue over us on the radar, but just an odd flake in the wind. Mmmm flake, the crumbliest, flakiest type of snow.

  5. A very light dusting here in Pickering. The one time i venture from home! Radar showing heavy showers over Scarborough ATM. Any reports from there? I wanna go home! tease.gif

A light dusting here. We're due south of Scarborough, but there's a slight Westerly element in their direction, so frustratingly they're passing a mile or two to the east with just an odd flurry here.

  6. Been in London today and got back to Doncaster station around 8.30. Uneventful drive until reaching the Wolds at Market Weighton where the road had just been heavily salted. Snow shower on top of the Wolds and another running into Driffield, then back onto the hills heading North on the Scarborough road into slush on the road all the way down into the village and we have a very wet slushy cover here, the third this month, though only one official cover. Shower just approaching us now, so I'll just have a quick lamp post check. Light snow, but this shower hasn't got much oomph.

Lot's of dripping outside so unless we get some more can't see this hanging on til morning, but not a breath of wind so any showers might linger. Currently 0.5c.

  7. What an idiot I am!!!!! Just looked out the window and there's a light snow cover. Totally surprised about that as at 0230 just very wet sleety stuff.

Just checked the temp and currently 0.3, max overnight 0.4, so why wasn't it all snow and why did it change back to snow? Not much of a snowfall, but hey!

  8. They were only falling as sleet mainly anyway mate, you've not missed out on much. laugh.png

Hardly, had a few snow showers here today, heavy one this morning, but nearer the coast would have been more sleety I would have thought. Personally, I hate missing out on anything. laugh.png

  9. Temp now 4,5C but humidity at 73% giving us a dew point of 0.3C. Showers becoming increasingly wintry with another one just starting with some nice chunky snowflakes mixed in.

Would anyone know if there was some sort of temperature inversion last night. Whilst browsing the temp maps on MO site the NYM and Wolds were really distinguishable showing green with the vale of york and Pickering showing blues

Could that explain why the initial PPN fell as snow here initially giving a decent covering before turning to rain later in the night.

People reporting sleet and rain at higher elevations whereas here at the coast even though my location is fairly high at 88mASL we had snow?

    Just curious for learning really.

Would appreciate if anyone could shed any light.

I think you'll find initially that the lower ground would have had the lowest temps, nothing unusual there. I think that the fact you had snow, as did I, was more due to being further East which hung on to cooler air and also the heaviest of the precipitation was this side as well. Once the air got mixed around a bit, then it turned back to snow, but there was certainly snow cover on the Wolds as well. Shower just coming in now!
