excluding the southeast because we have done so badly this year. As i said last night i made sure i was a good boy yesterday and god has repaid me with a weak, admittedly, thunderstorm, but it has certainly cheered me up and made my day
Woohoo, first two strikes of thunder a minute ago and storm moving into south west London - only my second day of thunder this year though.....
-
As usual the southeners get everytthing and us northerners are stuck with cells not exploading sighes!
I wish......
-
Breakthrough, I repeat, breakthrough in the south east - we have drizzle!!!!!!!!!!
-
Fair to say then that by and large today has been some what of a let down! Unless something of course kicks off later tonight which for the life of me I can't see, especially around my neck of the woods.
Nice!
It's unbelievable how unlucky the south east has been this year in terms of storms - the only bit of thunder i've heard this year were about 5 claps on Saturday morning under a drizzly weather front.

http://www.xcweather.co.uk/
I know someone replied earlier saying the Showers might have been responsible for this but surely this is not right ??
Click the above link and hover your mouse over Southend - Has Temp of 66f and Dewpoint of 57f - Not bad even for the USA
Now the London City which is 38 Miles west of there has a Temp of 64f and Dewpoint of 36f
Surely there is something seriously wierd going on with that
Need an explanation ??
I think the weather data on that site is from amateur weather stations?
edit: having said that, it is a similar scenario for the majority of stations in London, so it's probably correct.

Is there a west to east convergence zone to the north of London at the moment? There appears to be a line of storms moving west to east slightly north of London and growing in the process.
-
I can see a massive cell to my NNE - looks to be around north west London. It appears to have towered above every other cloud in the sky by at least double and it's got a massive and wide flat top.
Ashame it doesn't steer 90 degrees in my direction.
Interestingly, the temperature has risen 3C in the last hour although I doubt this will set anything off around here.
-
Decent looking shower about 5-10 miles to my south east - Suspicious looking wedge shaped lowering in the wall cloud.
-
Have a Question for anyone who is in the know on Dewpoints etc
Q. Why is Southend 12c and City of London 4c on the Dewpoints - This has me and Paul M Baffled atm ??
James the NMM Model shows the last dregs of the CZ Exiting that area and points East of there at 8-9pm, so might be worth a sniff
Paul S
Much less humid in London and the city is on the southern edge of the north flank of showers - I have not had a single shower today and seem to be stuck on the northern edge of a 20-30 mile band of clear sky.
Having said that, I can see some big towers shooting up to the north and on the horizon to the south.

IM FAMOUS  GET IN LOL

Ashame they had to use a certain terminology....

It's not humid at all here - 34%
And I have been outside and that feels about right.

Certainly looks like it's going to be a very lively day over most of Europe with a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms over North Italy and a large area of western Russia.

I doubt that little thunderstorm extension into south east England will hold true - it doesn't seem thundery at all - there's a cool wind blowing the cloud through at a high rate.
-
can someoe sent some up here not had one this year
Could someone send one down south, not had one this year
-
Well i'm glad that I told myself not to waste my time watching - there hasn't even been a drop of rain here, except for the drizzle we had this morning around 9ish.
Also, is the metoffice rainfall radar on drugs?? It's been showing 'red' cells over my area for much of the day, yet we have had no rain this afternoon!
-
Oh yes and this reinforces my expectations:

Well i'm not expecting anything for the south east. Most likely the BBCs prediction of heavy and thundery downpours will once again translate to a weak decaying front of drizzle as per usual.
I've learnt the lesson to stop wasting time looking, and enjoy what happens when it happens.

Yeah, you can make out slight rotation and rising motion of the cloud. Reminds me so much of May 31st 07 when I seen small scale rotation similar to this and then after an amazing thunderstorm.
Nice vid!
Thanks, i've also uploaded another video of a possible condensation funnel (this ones a bit clearer than the last video). There appears to be significant wind shear in the shot.
-
From what I saw over my way, i'm not surprised that there was a tornado - that hail didn't look too shabby..
I managed to film a bit of footage of an unstable rotating cloud base:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJsHa_QtjkQ&fmt=18
You might have to watch it several times, but the area of rotation is at the top of the screen with the cloud at the top of the screen moving right and the cloud slightly behind it moving left. I apologise for the poor filming quality and really wish I captured more.

Unless i've been living on another planet, as far as i'm aware, the maximum for London in July is not 31C, it's more like 23 or 24C.
Secondly, in no way will the July maximum rise to 41C in London - that is a typical July maximum for Las Vegas (which is in the middle of the desert!)
-
Massive highly unstable cell has fired into life over south London, and stretching over my house.
I have been observing a significant amount of rotation in the cloud base - it is currently rotating around a horizontal axis that keeps trying to go vertical.
Also, signifcant condensation funnels keep appearing below this rotation and keep getting sucked up into the cloud base with a apparently strong updraft.
Just to put things straight i'm being serious this time. I'll keep everyone posted.
-
I can see the cell which is to west of London on the metoffice radar and it looks exceptionally huge - I can see this one turning electrical further north IF there is enough insolation to feed off.
-
It looks like the south east has lost the first chance with all those developing cumulus/cumulonimbus.
Hopefully this 50 mile area of clear sky will allow for sufficient heating for the band from France to re-intensify over our shores.
-
Ok, back on to a more serious note, I think I may have witnessed a funnel cloud - it may have just been an unstable cloud base??
It did retreat back into the cloud a couple of minutes after I took this photo though..
Any expert opinions on this??
-
I was going to say moderate rain no sign of any thunder yet, but... Sounds nasty.
On further observations it turned out to be an F1-CT10N4L

Hi, huge cell passing over my head right now - rather active electrically with fork lightning - it has just began to reintensify - i'd assume that it is probably coming over you very soon.
