  1. I got a light cover overnight but not even a cm. Losing a lot now in the sunnier areas.

Was out and about in Glssgow this morning and some areas of the City still have a pretty thick blanket of snow that's great to see.

Expecting the coldest night of the winter for me tonight.

  2. Regarding the rain/sleet/snow moving down from the north tonight its not a typical straight northerly with showers being eaten up by the mountains. Its all wrapped up in a little feature that runs down the east coast so although it doesn't look intense it does look as though some precipitation will remain.

In terms of what will fall out the sky that's probably a bit less clear as there is also some warmer air wrapped up with it. Having said that it low ground may still be around 1-2c and dp's around 0-1c so it's not exactly balmy. If there is existing snow cover the temperature is likely to be a bit lower.

So, it's definitely marginal but some could get lucky and wake up to a cover of a few cm's.

  3. Snow still quite light with the odd heavy burst but not really adding to existing cover. There does seem like some heavier showers to the west but not sure if they will die out as they move east. 1.5c/0.7c.

  4. A word of advice for anyone thinking of driving in or around Glasgow tonight - don't! Utter chaos at the moment. Snow that has fallen has turned main roads in the city centre eg around the Royal Infirmary hospital into ice rinks. Have seen one bus hit crash barriers at the side of the road and a mail van get stuck on a slip road going onto the motorway.

  5. The showers out to the west don't look as though they are losing any intensity at all. If anything they seem to be pepping up a bit over the last half an hour. Still moderate snow for me and about 4cm so far, temperature 0.9c/0.1c.

  6. I'm in Kilmaurs. No snow at all. Horrible. I wish I had stayed in Strathblane. They are getting loads of it.

I'm just beside Strathblane and we've had a couple of direct hits tonight. Hopefully there's plenty to come for everyone overnight.

  7. Maybe the Atlantic was cooler back in '84? We've been close but no cigar a few times recently.

I'm surprised at how low the dew point has gone, down to -1.3ºC with a temp of 6.8ºC, humidity now down to 55% which seems very low.

It may have been a contributing factor looking at the SST anomalies.

  8. Aye, remember it well!   Favourite winter of all time for me.   Somehow though, I don't think we will be lucky enough to get that again, not this year anyway.   Would love to be proved wrong though!

You're probably right that we'd need a lot of luck but over the last couple of weeks I was thinking that there were definite similarities and was surprised when how alike both January's were/are when looking through the archives this morning. What we don't seem to get so often is upgrades in the snow potential as it gets closer to T0, it more often seems to downgrade. There used to be a lot more surprise snowfalls back in the late 70's/80's - although maybe that's just the memory playing tricks.

  9. Possibly my favourite winter was 1984 with some real heavy snowfall from the West or North West. I'm not saying for a minute that there will be the same level of snow but there are definitely similarities with the current set up with the Azores High sitting stuck to our South West in 1984 and a strong Polar Vortex in early January over North East Canada/Greenland. Uppers were low enough to make the Atlantic a snow making machine.

  10. Interestingly the heavy rain that has been falling here for the last couple of hours has turned back to wet snow and the temperature is dropping again from 3.2c to 2.4c and the dewpoint is down from 2.1c to 1.6c.

  11. The week ahead is certainly looking stormy and cold with plenty of snow chances. Overnight Monday into Tuesday is looking decent with the temperature looking a bit better for lying snow that yesterday.
