  1. Right then folks, I might as well have a stab in the dark about what the hell is going to happen in the coming 48 hours! As small distances could lead to massive variations, I'll do an area-by-area forecast...(This is mainly based on the NAE and NMM, both hi-res models, SUBJECT TO CHANGE!)

Coastal areas, Dorset, Wiltshire and S Hampshire

The front will arrive in western areas by around 6pm, and spread to all areas by 9pm. My thoughts are that to the west of the IOW, most areas will see rain with little wintriness. Temperatures and dew points will be too warm for falling snow. For coastal areas east of the IOW though we will see an initial period of snow, but this won't last long, with the milder air brought in by the south-westerly winds from the warm sea scuppering chances here. I expect it will have cleared by Sunday dawn. Fog may be an issue.

    N Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire

For most of this area, it will be mainly snow. Again, arriving around 7-8pm. These areas will see a good 10 hours of snow in some places, the more east you are the longer the snow will last. For Hampshire it may turn to rain sooner than Berks and Oxfordshire as the less cold air starts to make inroads. I don't expect any of these areas to have a full-snow event, but there will certainly be enough to wake up to a covering to. Although it may be a couple of inches of slush for those further south and west. It will mostly clear by Sunday morning bar the odd drizzly/sleety flurry and again fog patches may form.

Anybody NE/E/SE of Reading, not on the coast

I expect anyone on this thread in the above mentioned region will see an entirely snow event, and this is where (in my opinion) the sweet spot will lie. 4 inches or more certainly possible here.

These predictions are only based on the NMM and NAE. I have a gut feeling that the front may find it more difficult than forecast to actually barge through the cold air. *IF* it does so we may have a stalling situation over the spine of the country, preventing the less cold air making inroads as well as keeping the precipitation right on top of us. The result? Fun and games!

  2. Totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! :wallbash: going mad with boredom.

Sounds like even more boredom then, :whistling: Ho hum, roll on summer.:fool:

Looks like things could be on the up, possible colder weather coming in after the weekend. From what people have been saying in the MOD forum it'll get a little colder, but probobley not much like we experianced before Christmas. Thats not so much of a bad thing, but anythings got to be better than this.

  3. I imagine they are in the south west thread... This thread is the most quiet as most people see themselves as either in the sw or se, not inbetween! laugh.gif

You forget quite how good they are don't you! drinks.gif

    Indeed!

Infact, the last few days have reminded me just how fun driving a car can be, I'm an avid motorcyclist, however this isn't the time to be out on a bike, regardless how good any of my many and various bikes are in snow :yahoo: got bored of cars about 3 years ago and haven't really driven one since, passing that job over to my wife. But couldn't resist on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and today.

Been out taking lots of elderly friends to Bingo, Pub, Golf, shopping etc and enjoying the driving, so hoping for lots more snow...think I'll be disapointed though. Possible reload at some point this coming week, but I suspect we've seen the best of the good stuff for now, maybe some more in Feb?

    Hi,

My question is for any experts out there!

U all seem to be thinking that no-one is really sure if we're gonna c anymore snow over the next few days.

The radars dont sound overly promising so can anyone explain why sky news (red button) weather shows snow from late 2night throughout 2 moz morn and mon right on top of all of us down south??

Where do they get there info from?? And r they reliable?? :unknw:

Many thanks :yahoo: and i really hope they r right...for all our sakes haha :yahoo:

I really can't see where they're getting their info from, as none of the charts seem to show any real developments for the next 48 hours. Tuesday onwards, indeed, there's certainly a minor upgrade and possible snow event, but for the here and now, only the very south coast between Southend and Brighton are going to see any good white stuff.

  4. The forum threads go quite so I go out shopping (for what seems like ages) have some fun with the car in wide open car parks, come back home and it would seem that every man and their dog has left a post in this thread......AWESOME!

Now the good bit, its bitterly cold here in Basingstoke, wind speed has gone up, very tiny winsy small snow flakes are falling but not doing much in the way of settling. Lampost, check, beer, check, laptop/internet connection, check, camera, check!

All ready to do a night of exciting weather watching!!!!

    Have fun all!

  5. Nothing here either Captain Rob (although I'm slightly more north of Portsmouth at the moment in Waterlooville/Horndean). Blue skies and chilly wind! Not expecting any flurries until late pm/tomorrow.

    Nothing here in Basingstoke either.

Are you really expecting anything to happen this evening? So far all the snow showers have fizzled out before they've got this far inland.

Looking at the data, I think we've seen the best part of the snow so far. Whats still left wont thaw too quickly, another week or so of whats left, but I really can't see another reload/dumping coming at all this weekend or into the new week. Although, I'll happily be put right if it does :)

February should be another good month for snow, when, where and how much is impossible to predict, however past experience says that things tend to get a little lively in Feb.

    Doh! We're missed again...

  6. I apologise on behalf of the south, it's embarrassing seeing what the news people get up to, although it's more accurate really to just say that they're London-centric rather than South-centric. I remember in Feb living in Guildford and they never mentioned the fact that we'd got over a foot of snow in places, preferring instead to go on about London. But really they paint a picture that is far from the truth—we had 10cm here, and I went out earlier on to the supermarket in town. There were cars driving by on the snow just fine, the buses were all running, people were out and about, the shops were open, and no one was 'panic buying' bread and milk. Come home and switch on the television, you'd think the apocalypse has hit; it's a load of rubbish and I know it creates resentment for the other people to have to put up with it, but all I can say is that it's the fault of the news people, not the rest of us who are happily carrying on with what, in the grand scheme of things, is not a lot of snow at all. But that doesn't make for such an interesting 'story'. Whether people who are tasked with reporting facts should be worrying about whether the 'story' is good-enough or not is another matter. Certainly saying 'blizzards have swept the south', which is a direct quote I saw earlier, is in no way a fact.

Couldn't agree more, clearly its a slow news week.

  7. Being 31, I remember quite well the winters from the 80's through to today. The snow we had in December and overnight (in the Basingstoke area) is roughly the same amount from those times in the past, but from what I remember the frosts have been harsher and the snow more intense this winter. Essentially the colder temps have lingered a lot longer than I remember, but being human, I could be wrong.

In the past it would take say a day or two to get the quantities that Basingstoke is experiencing today.

For this winter to be a snow quant record breaker it would have to be a)consitant all over the country. and b)very deep quantities, again, all over the country.

I was going to say that "it'll never break the great snows of '40, '69 etc, but how many times over the last 18 months has the weather proved us skeptics wrong? Um, quit a bit so far!
