  1. have a look at 18z then you will feel much better

by the way although i am NW strictly speaking im more in the middle of the country so thats does make a difference for sure as easterlies do eliver here as i have seen tonight

I am yet too see it mate - could you explain further, cheers.

  2. Granada weather just said 15-20cms in eastern Pennine areas, but 'a fair few cms' possible in western areas later in the day too. At least they didn't cancel the forecast because the nw has vanished from the map. :D

Local forecasts definetly worth keeping an eye on considering the national weather dont have us in the script. Also nw radars and the forum will be very useful - learn alot more here anyhow.

  3. They may have simply forgotten, or perhaps given northwest England is the single most sheltered area in the UK during an easterly, were not expected to get much/anything?

I think the latter statement is probably correct.

I'm gonna stop gbeing so disapointed by things now, I said all along that being an easterly we woud'nt get anything from this so I should'nt be suprised. Just so many times that pretty much the whole of the country gets a decent snowfall and the north west misses out again - thats what bothers me.

  4. Feels like you're the 'invisible' guest at a party really. I've tried to be all 'c'est la vie' but am feeling a bit fed up tonight. Hopefully there'll be something to smile about at some point.

Its extremely disapointing to find the absolute shear and utter negligence and incompetence of the forecasters. In the latest forecast:

    South-east england

    South-west England

    The Midlands

    Eastern England

    North east England

    Scotland

    Ireland

all got a mention. THE WORDS NORTH-WEST OF ENGLAND WAS NOT DID NOT PASS THE FORECASTERS LIPS.

  5. whats it like there right now?

Well seperated light snow showers that have provided a very slight dusting.

In Dan Corbett terms: "Like someone has sprinkled icing sugar on a cake."

All the same I was'nt expecting any snowfall until tomorrow so the fact that snow has fallen at all is a real supise to me, although I'm not expecting to wake up to much different than what we have now.

  6. After watching the latest bbc weather forecast on bbc news 24 I was astounded/dissapointed to see:

    (1) How the north-west does'nt even get a mention in the forecast.

    (2) As far as the graphics are concerned no major snow forecasted for the majority of nw England.

Woud be nice for them to give us a mention - alot of people live here that would like to now.

  7. Yayyy! V light snow here at last - should think so too - nw radar has had me under pink ppn for about 15 mins, though I guess that doesn't always mean it reaches the ground. Hi HotSnow - yes I'm still hoping against probabilities! Countryfile forecast wasn't great for here but lots of nowcasting will need to be done methinks. Better check...yes still light snow. Boy, you're easily pleased when so snow-starved for so long! :D

In fairness alot of the snow falling around the north west has been a real suprise and a real bonus. If we were going to get any I was expecting it to come more Monday/Tuesday time.

  8. I was having a chat with snowdrifter in which we were discussing 'snow events' in north west England and how (with the exception of high ground) we don't favour to well.

He mentioned the Feb 1996 event - when a band of rain coming from the west clashed with a pool of extremely cold air from the east producing real, proper 'HEAVY' snow. This is the type of system the nw relies on for proper snowfall, they happen occasionally but they are usually preceeded by rain and mild air fairly quickly.

Being an easterly we are not in a favourable location for any deent precipitation over the enxt few days - some areas may recieve a dusting or a cm or two but no more than that. They can produce good amounts of snow here but I just don't believe that this one is potent enough.

  9. All the forecasts ive seen don't seem to favour the north west (apart from high ground) as far as sunday/monday is concerned, with anything comeing from the east petering out after the penines. Any snowfall after monday will be light and squally in nature. So yes some areas will 'see' snow but nothing that serious.

At the end of the day this is an easterly event with any sunstantial snowfall affetcing central and eastern england.

  10. We rarely get rain from a westerly never mind an easterly here, but it will be interesting to see what happens hopefully it will result in a covering of snow, but if not it will be a dry and cold affair.

I know i'm sating the obvious but this time tomorrow things will be a lot clearer.

  11. No offence taken pal - glad to have someone else from Lancs here tbh! Sorry if you thought I was having a go - I've been bemoaning the nw's lack of snow since 2003 when I joined the forum and probably should have borne the lack-of-snow factor in mind before we moved here! I totally agree with the need to stay light-hearted in these situations. Good luck for these week mate. :shok:

I was thinking that there are'nt many lancashire based forummers here. Suprising considering the density of population. Totally agree wih you mate it can be really frustrating in the north west at times. Weve had so many promising situations in the past that have never produced. Easterlies that never get over the pennines, northerlies that for some beknown reason completely avoid us altogether, weak north westerlies fronts that produce minimal ppn, or mild sectors that turn snow to rain!

I'l stick my neck out and say this is slightly more promising than usual - purely due to the fact that this has been a noticeably colder winter in comparison to recent years.

  12. Can't we wait until after whatever we get for such emotional words as 'gutted'. Personally I am positive but realistic. You may be right H*S - the odds are that other places will get more. When my team Plymouth played Arsenal in the cup it didn't stop 9000 Argyle fans going to the Emirates! :nonono: Gutted now? No - just ready to lampost watch with a realistic head! :( Gutted if there is only 0.5cm or less? No, cos I'm used to that anyway! It's a win-win situation really if you approach it like that - an attitude I've learnt to develop over several years.

Sorry no offence meant - It was a tongue in cheek remark to be fair, If you look at my posts since I joined a couple of days ago:

    (1) I have always played down what the north west will get in terms of snowfall.

    (2) Given honest and realistic accounts and views based on my personal knowledge and most iportantly- experience.

    (3) Not begrudged those in more favourable locations to myself.

    (4) Constantly reminded people not to get carried away with snow depths, chances, etc until just before the event takes place.

    (5) Tried to be light hearted and friendly - trying to enjoy what is a rare time.

Let's stay focused guys and try to enjoy what enfolds before us,

  13. Once again a pretty vague forecast by the BBC. Snow flurries extending inland tomorrow but no graphics for monday peter gibbs just said its going to get "Pretty Awful" for monday and stated an early warning. So the BBC is still kept guessing with the charts as well as us.

What a fascinating time to live in the Uk though. I mean we *could* be on the verge of a nationwide snow event. There isnt anywhere i would rather be now!

Glad the LP is progged to move more East so this gives a bigger area for continuing colder uppers with no mild mush.

Yeah the bbc are still being edgy in their forecasts - can't really blame them.

  14. Who told you that? do you mean Stockholm?

Haha that one made me chuckle!!

Yeah I think Saddleworth will get a good dumping. I hate to say it but most parts of the north west (away from high ground) will be lucky to get a covering up to a cm or two. So sorry guys but were just not in the right part of the country.

    Gutted.

  15. In this case it is really difficult to predict how much snowfall the nw of England.

I really do believe that after sw england we are the second worst location for significant snow in england (not the UK.) Each year some areas do experience either light snow showers giving a covering that may last a day at most or snow preceeded by rain coming from the west after a period of cold conditions. Sad really.
