  1. Light snow - vis over 1km

Snow flurry - very brief light snow

    Mod snow - 0.5km to 1km vis

Heavy snow - under 0.5km vis

Snow storm - steady or prolonged heavy snow

Blizzard - heavy snow and sustained wind, frequent gusts over 50km/h

No fake reports now then !

I'd say it's been varying between heavy and moderate tonight. At 5pm ish you couldn't see the park which is one block away from me.

  2. I must say the number of reports of "heavy snow" even in this thread over the last couple of weeks at times when we've had nothing on the radar more than yellow has struck me as a little bizarre... I think it's all to do with perception, but I do think it is misleading.

Don't forget the radar doesn't always give a 100% view as snow seems to confuse it. Wednesday didn't look very potent on the radar but it was easily the heaviest snow shower I have seen this year.

  3. I think it's pretty unusual for frontal snow to be heavier than North Sea snow showers anywhere, but a snow shower will drop maybe a couple of inches in half an hour whereas frontal snow can give over 6 inches over the course of entire day, although the North East rarely does very well out of these events compared with some places such as West Yorkshire.

  4. Nothing on the radar suggest "very heavy" - yellow with a bit of orange at best.. the reds were further north and are in the N sea now.

OK, maybe not very heavy as that would be 4"+ an hour, but its certainly heavy rather than moderate, although the flakes aren't as big as they were half an hour ago. I still think we will get about 2 inches all in which isn't bad, although it won't be looking as fresh by the morning!

  5. Heavy snow showers for a time this morning, but a thaw has set in once more this afternoon. This winter (so far) won't be remembered by me as being as severe as either 09/10 or 10/11, but has certainly been one of the snowier ones in the last 20 years, and a far cry from last year!

Of course that might change if we get a severe spell in February...

  6. Just took an official measurement of 13cms although took another one about a foot away of 11cm. So a pretty good cold spell here.

Also it seemed to be raining in Newcastle around four o clock, how badly is this affecting your snow cover. (I was in the city centre so it was all unsnowy)

Not much really, but the trees are no longer pasted. Overall this year has been about average for snow, but this particular spell has been very good.
